Well I hate to do this but I just thought this was interesting and worth discussion. Obviously we don’t have the strongest QB situation as of right now. So enter Tom Silverstein article: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/127982488.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter I was originally linked from PFT to this story. Giving a bit more credibility to the author is a commentary by Gregg Rosenthal from PFT: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/18/matt-flynn-enjoying-strong-training-camp/#comments A nice credit that it is not just a beat-writer trying to stir the pot, but an honest opinion. I know there was talk of Matt Flynn earlier this year. I also know it is just a meaningless blurb to some degree, but this will certainly make me take a look at Green Bay’s preseason game. I certainly don’t remember him impressing me all that much at LSU. But Green Bay has developed a reputation as a QB developmental ground. Any opinions on his ability? Would Green Bay be shopping him and if so, for what? Where is that Green Bay fan who hovered around here last year.
I have seen matt play a few times and he has impressed me each time. I was going this offseason they elf take a closer look at the kid but they makes to much sense.
I'm sure the scouts are checking out the pre-season games, not just for Flynn but guys like Caleb Hanie also.
Flynn's been okay as far as I have seen him, which is not much. He's certainly more mobile than Henne, which is interesting. Not sure how similar our system is to theirs. Would it be a huge change for him? If so, with a few weeks before the opener, he may not have time to learn our offense and contribute. That said, he STILL might be better than a Henne. I don;t know. Not sure about the time learning the offense aspect this late in the game.
I wasn't very impressed to be honest with his Patriots game and his Detroit game. I just didn't see him flashing the kind of ability you see from the great franchise players at that position. Maybe I'm wrong though. But the thing about it is, that bastard Andy Reid has set an awful high price tag on these sorts of trades. And I doubt the Packers are going to play ball on a much lower price, because honestly they have only 3 QBs in camp I believe, and Graham Harrell is kind of iffy IMO...and yet everyone knows that Aaron Rodgers has to deal with concussion issues that pop up every now and then. Maybe next year. Though I dread the price tag if that's the case.
Agree with CK that if it happened, it would be next offseason. But there will be more options by then anyways. And the longshot chance that Henne has played so well that we 'have' our franchise QB set by then. Wow, not an ounce of me believes that. That's disappointing.
Folks, I doubt that Flynn is going anywhere, but name me a QB who has been even somewhat successful coming from a WCO that has ever been as successful in any other system ?? For whatever reason they just aren't very successful in other systems.... Not doubting that Flynn is a good prospect at QB, but that system he's in is very QB friendly. Favre, Feeley, Garcia, Montana, Carr, Harrington, McNabb...who else ??
No wonder you don't like Henne. If you weren't impressed by him in the Pats game when he went 24 for 37 251yds, 3 TD's and 1 INT what are you impressed by? He did look like crap against the Lions though.
Matt Flynn will be an UNRESTRICTED Free Agent next year. The Packers could be looking to get something for him this year based on that info. It is true that the Pack would be in trouble if AR went down if Flynn was traded. May have to include Chad Henne in the deal. Would you trade a 2nd and Henne for Flynn? Ask me in a couple more weeks
I was just going to say, Matt Flynn and Caleb Hanie are two guys who should have gotten a look by our FO, and we rarely discussed them as fans. They certainly have more upside than Matt Moore...
That's a great point. I highly doubt in this QB driven league GB would be able to keep Flynn next year as an UDFA. Hypothetically if you do trade for him, you would need to bring an extension with it. Therefore the baseline would be Kevin Kolb numbers. With that I may have just answered my question. Would I risk essentially a Kolb-like deal with the handcuffing extension for Flynn. No. unless I was 99% sure of Flynn
Packers seem to do well with backups named Matt. Hasselbeck turned out to be the best QB the Seahawks ever had.
If Will Allen was healthy, I'd think we might be able to tempt them with some of our corner depth (in addition to a mid-level pick). But yeah, I think it's a bit late now.
No. That's...no. There's no way that would happen, IMO. They saw what Kevin Kolb was traded for. And now they're going to trade us their own version of Kolb for Will Allen? No, I think that's maybe a little bit of wishful thinking on our part.
I also think that Miami needs to make a deal with Green bay instead of bringing in dallas or chicago rejects. I really liked Matt Flynn and I beleive he is a better qb then John Beck and speaking of the rascal how is our former qb doing ? Also lets remember that Green bay and miami had some of the bet trades. Terrell Buckley and a couple of other players were involved.
The only game I saw Flynn play extensively was against New England. Considering it was his first start in the NFL I thought he looked outstanding. Looked really comfortable in the pocket, threw accurately, and was very poised. Thought he played a better game in his "one" start than Henne has in any of his 27. Of course, it gets down to what the price tag is. High draft picks along with salary-cap unfriendly contract make this deal highly unlikely. As a fan I would be all for it.
If he's out performing Rodgers in camp...why don't we try and get that scrub off the Pack instead...?
I don't quite get the Kolb comparisons, personally. Kolb was a 2nd round pick with 7 NFL starts. Flynn is a 7th round pick with 1 NFL start. Additionally, the Packers have their franchise quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. Andy Reid did a great job of expressing doubt as to whether Vick is the Eagles' franchise quarterback. In fact, I think the signing of Vince Young suggests they're still not confident. He leveraged that uncertainty in order to get Arizona to overpay.
I think the Pack will keep him this year for insurance in case Rodgers has to miss any games this year. That said, if we want him, we should try to make a deal for him right now instead of waiting until next offseason.
Mark Brunell and Aaron Brooks werent half bad either as packer backups/developmental types. That said, I didnt want Kolb for the price being asked and while I like flynn more, I dont want him for anything close to that price either. Especially with the potential for disaster existing this year.
Я видел, матовый играть несколько раз, и он произвел на меня впечатление каждый раз. Я собирался это не в сезон они эльф внимательнее посмотреть на ребенка, но они делают для особого смысла.
Dave Krieg was their best ever IMO. We could of had Hasselbeck though and the fact we didn't is one of, if not the most unforgivable snafus of Wanny's tenure.
Me too. That BCS Championship game against Ohio St was one of the most memorable all around QB performances ever for me. That he was allowed to slip to the 7th was an example of scouts and GMs over analyzing IMO. I guess his being just a 1 yr starter and not some sort of super mega athlete like another recent BCS Championship QB caused teams to devalue him. Big mistake for 31 other teams.
I like Flynn quite a bit. I think he has some talent. Do I think hes a franchise guy? No, but I think he has talent to work with and to become solid in this league.
