Friday Morning Discussion: If Fins start out 0-4 under Sparano...

Discussion in 'Miami Dolphins Forum' started by MonstBlitz, Aug 19, 2011.

What would you do with Sparano if Phins started 0-4?

  1. Can him. See what Nolan can do.

    23.5%
  2. Wait until mathematically eliminated. Then fire him.

    19.1%
  3. Give him the whole season, no matter what.

    57.4%

That's a good point. He was losing some of the players at the end of last season. I also know some supported him, but an 0-4 start would be viewed as picking up where he left off last season which was embarrassing losses to lesser teams.

He'll need a fast start, but with New England on the schedule to kick things off it won't be easy.

You honestly think there is a >50% chance we start out 0-4?

Right?! Who was that QB that was a "Lock" to be the next Montana/Marino/Elway/Unitas?

I'm not saying that Luck won't be a great NFL QB, but more often than not the "sure bet" QB tends to bust or be mediocre.

fan-base or franchise? More excuses? More of the same?

every season is precious, too precious to waste: 0/4 & done
truth of the matter: both Henne & Sparano are playing house chips
time to close this game if they cannot turn the corner early on
Miami deserves a chance to win, time to fold may be drawing near
if it becomes obvious that they cannot win at the table in 2011
this should be about the game & franchise, not Henne or Sparano

But...but..... what if....we go 0-4.....Henne gets hurt.....andddddd......it's because of the Defense and not the Offense. Do we then promote Nolan to HC?

We are now 3 layers deep into this exercise in hypotheticsm. Time at the 3rd level moves much slower than at the first layer. Be sure to keep track of the layers of hyotheticsm to discern reality from fantasy.

If they do drop the 1st two games, that would make it 1-12 in the last 13 home games (I believe). Ross has to be livid if that happens. How can you do that to your fans ? Its totally unacceptable.

I don't know about starting out 0-4 but I'm about 99% certain we start out 0-1. That Patriots game is freaking hopeless.

Obviously....our fan base is not very optimistic. There are some that think we have a pretty good team. But any confidence anyone has in this team...is extremely fragile. After the Harbaugh ordeal.....last years let down......

If we started 0-4....the negativity is going to be overwhelming. I dont think you can risk having our young players go through an abysmal season where the negativity just gets ramped up each and every week.

So, at 0-4...Id let Sparano go and bring in Nolan. Now...that being said...before I did that...I would figure out the reasons we started 0-4. If we were hit with a rash of major injuries....wouldnt pull the trigger.

What happens if we start 4-0?

    -Extend both Irish and Sparano?
    -Jump for Joy?
-Tell the Pats and Jets to suck it?

Yes, we easily could lose to NE & Texans. That we all can agree on. Cleveland beat us last season, and I think McCoy is a riser on the QB scene and will do enough to beat us. We don't have a stellar record in Cleveland either. SD is SD, not an elite team, but better than us, and they are at home.

I put the odds at 60/40 we are 0-4, 85/15 we are 1-3, and probably 10/90 we are 4-0.

By the way.....and Im probably as big a kool aid drinker as anyone....but I dont see any problem with the question posed and the poll.

Its merely a reflection of the precarious state this franchise is in. We are teetering on either going through another regime change....or gaining momentum to begin the climb to credibility. I believe we are rising...but Im not naive enough to think the other possibility is probably more realistic.

We start 0-2..or even get blown away by the Pats and look like we dont belong on the same field as them......the torches and pitchforks will be at hand.....

Can't firing the coach threads before the 1st game is even played already count as a torch and/or pitchfork? It's at least a match and toothpick.

Would you put money on your "feeling"?

The Patriots are a goddamn machine. The first game against the Jaguars they just whooped the hell out of them on fundamental execution. Last night they actually whipped out some of the kinks they've got in store for teams this year and they pantsed the Buccaneers like a mathlete.

Thing about canning Tony and the giving the spot to Nolan would be that if we don't give him the job after the season he likely bolts. Depending on who we might hire he may bolt anyway, but it can be a sticky situation.

Well...thats kinda the reality of it isnt it? Clearly these guys have a very short rope with the fan base....and with Ross I would imagine. Two back to back seasons of 7-9...from a fan base that CLEARLY expects and wants better then that....then thats the situation Sparano and Ireland find themselves in. High pressure.....just how it is.

Not sure about money.....but Ill do something like a sig or something. I believe we're gonna win that game......I think this team knows whats on the line....I think we have some dynamic players and I think they know nobody believes they are gonna win. Its Monday night....and they know how big it would be for this season....to stomp on the Pats in this game.

Its a huge game for us......much more on the line for us then the Pats.

That is what happens when the HC wins just 1 of his last 10 home games, was almost replaced by the owner and you have a QB that seems to be a turnover machine. The public has had it, and it will show tonight when I believe less than 30,000 will show up. Even the Dolphins have admitted to losing more than 15,000 season ticket holders this off-season.

That's why they should have canned EVERYONE last off-season. Nolan has had one good season here, now he is ingratiated himself deeply with a 2nd season - it would be damn near impossible for Ross to not give him at the very least a chance at the HC job.

I tell you what. I *was* morbidly curious if the Dolphins might somehow come out with the W in that game because I knew the Dolphins would be highly motivated, and I wasn't sure where the Patriots' motivation was at. Now, I know. The Patriots are motivated for perfection. That game is going to be a hand grenade in the face for the Dolphins.

It was the PACING that was the problem last night. God ****ing damn Bill Belichick. Nobody can ever say he's not a smart football coach. No mini camps, no OTAs, training camps with no two-a-days, many veterans couldn't even participate in training camp until like a week into it, questionable conditioning for a whole mess of players. These things all favor established teams with established systems and everyone KNOWS it. So, how do you leverage that? Answer is easy. PACE. They were practically running the Blur last night. Huddle, break, MIKE, go. Read PFT today. The Bucs weren't even close to prepared for it. Gerald McCoy was like "Umm, Mr. Brady, can we line up please?"

I haven't seen the Patriots look this good since they went 18-1. And that year, if you played them in the first half of the season, you didn't just get beat, you got ****ing stomped on like a worm. I don't think they're necessarily championship bound, but I think teams that play them in the FRONT HALF of the season...are not in store for good things.

I return to the mantra I chanted throughout last season:

no more excuses. its time to play ball.
    no more excuses for Sparano
    no more excuses for Henne
    no more excuses for injuries
    no more excuses weather
no more excuses for the offensive line
no more excuses for field conditions
    no more excuses for referees
    no more excuses for coaching
no more excuses for systems of play
    no more excuses for players
don't blame it on the fan-base or anything else:

no more excuses! I don't want to hear anymore lame-azz excuses.

man-up & play ball. if you can't do it :butthead:get out of the way & let someone else do it.

Its a fan base that DESERVES better. We have supported the team for the last 10 years and one playoff game, and that was a farce game at that. We are not Cubs fans who revel in being "the lovable losers". Many of us can harken back to the days that we remember not IF we would make the playoffs, but IF we would have home field advantage or not. Its been a very humbling experience seeing the other side of the tracks, in the NFL, and I am tired of it, and wish to get back to that feeling of belief we used to have in our team.

I am convinced that the present regime is not the ones that will lead us back to glory, and that is the bottom line. I can't wait to see them gone.

Again, this isn't a firing the coach thread. It's a hypothetical discussion. And for those of you making snide remarks about discussing hypothetical discussions, all we do is speculate on this board so I don't understand the butthurt about it. Are we only allowed to speculate if the speculation is positive?

Sadly, agree with you about the Patriots. They will be a juggernaut. Far better teams than us will be embarrassed by them this year.

I'm interested to hear why you voted the way you did in this poll if you don't mind sharing. I'm sure you have a good reason, and I'd like to hear it.

I think this offseason was a worse time to make changes up top because of the lockout. I mean look how much trouble it is getting a new offense installed, imagine if the whole management and coaching staff was turned over.

If Sparano can show enough this year (more than 9 wins or the playoffs) given that time has worked against him, I think we'll be in pretty good shape. And even if it doesn't work out, I don't believe we'd have been in any better shape (heading into 2012) with massive changes this past offseason.

and this shows you how a fanbase can affect a franchise in negative fashion..The unjust and sometimes ignorant negativity will keep people from going to the stadium and supporting their team, so when the players take the field and see how disgusting it looks, it affects their play on the field.Human nature..

Agreed, and I think I'd be all for keeping Sparano with 9+ wins, playoffs or not. Providing a lot of the losses weren't as embarrassing as some of our losses at home last year, e.g. (browns, lions, bills).

Also providing we don't see a lot of the inconsistency we saw last year - win one, lose one, win one, lose one. That to me points to problems in coaching and inability to keep a team motivated.

Basically he should beat the teams he should beat and hopefully a few we shouldn't.
