So last night I recorded some of the stats for the starters for both teams as I watched the game. Here are some random stats just to get the discussion rolling. Feel free to ask questions and I will try to answer as many as possible, time permitting. I track a bit of information; look at the very bottom of the post for links to what I track and an Excel spread sheet dump of my stat tracking so you can search it for things you want to know. Note: I am new to stat tracking and I have plenty of kinks to work out of this process, but that is what the Preseason is for right? :)

    Number of passes targeted at:
    Marshall - 6 targets, 1 incomplete, 45 yards
    Bess - 5 targets, 0 incomplete, 54 yards
    Bush - 4 targets, 2 incomplete, 33 yards
    Fasano - 3 targets, 1 incomplete, 56 yards
Hartline - 3 targets, 1 incomplete, 11 yards. Note: He had 1 completion ( for 10 yards ) was called back due to a penalty on the Oline. So that is why he has 3 targets, but only 1 incomplete and 1 catch.
    Gates - 2 targets, 2 incomplete
    Thomas - 1 target, 1 incomplete,
    Hilliard - 1 target, 1 incomplete

Running Game Stats ( I removed Henne's Scrambles, the failed Gates' Reverse, and any plays w/ penalties. This is strictly Oline and RB based stats)
    Totals: 16 plays, 72 yards, 4.5 avg ,2 TD

    1st Down Performance:
    10 runs, 24 yards, 2.4 avg, 1 TD, 2 penalties for -15 yards
    11 passes, 97 yards, 8.8 avg, 0 TD, 0 penalties.

    # of play calls by personnel package
    Dolphins:
    11 personnel, 28 plays
    12 personnel, 10 plays
    21 personnel, 7 plays
    22 personnel, 1 play
    23 personnel, 5 play

    Panthers:
    11 personnel, 14 plays
    12 personnel, 6 plays
    21 personnel, 1 play

Feel free to ask questions and see if I can provide you answer from the stats I recorded. If you want to have a look at the data for yourself you can view it online at Google Docs here. And if you want to know what the fields in the data represent you can get an explanation here.

You can also use these stats to help find the plays you are interested in quickly if you recorded the game. Let's say you want to evaluate Pouncey's run blocks, well just sort the data by "Run" and that will give you the time in the game that the run plays took place so you can fast forward directly to them and skip through the passing, defense, and special teams plays. This is a simplified example but you can get the general point.

Note: I recorded stats for the Panthers offensive plays as well. So might be able to get some insight on our defensive performance by looking at that information.

I hope this post raises a few questions, sparks some debate, or provides some value to others.

    Take Care

EDIT: REAL STATS FOR REAL TALK!

EDIT2: Correct Bush's target number. I mistakenly counted a run as a pass.

Thank you very much. I am hoping once we get a couple of regular season games under out belt the stats will start to give some insight.

So a question in the future that might be asked is what is our yardage per run in 11 personnel vs 21 personnel vs 12 personnel. And in theory you could even narrow it down based on field position so only look at running plays that took place from our own 20 yard line to midfield. So I am excited about the future, but I have some hurdles to over come to get there.

The last two people to make heavy use of the phrase "real talk", are both banned.

The only bad thing I see is that we need to get better on those 1st down runs. 2.4 yards won't cut it on 1st down.

    Great stat sheet though!

    First, thank you :).

Secondly, I agree that 1st down yards per carry is a bit concerning. It seems like there is a contradiction in the numbers. Overall our running game was fine (4.5 avg) but first down was TERRIBLE. I might look into it further. Maybe some of the big runs were on 2nd down. I will take a peak later if someone else doesn't get to it before me.

I would like to add "It is what it is" to that filter as well.

On topic: Thanks for putting forth the work on this, mbmonk. I look forward to more of these as the season goes.

I was expecting the run game to end up with more yards per carry than that. The first half i could see the severe struggle to gain yardage on the ground but watching the game in the second half i thought we had a few drives full of running plays that produced a little better. Nice work on stats.

These stats are for the first half only. So that might explain why the numbers aren't matching up.

Outstanding stuff MB!! I like that you decided to keep running stats to only Oline & RBs.

REAL STATS for REAL TALK! is kinda catchy if you ask me.

Good work and I appreciate it, but after many of the previous posts that have been using the phrase REAL TALK!, whenever I read that my mind translates it as "something ridiculous was just posted". I don't know that I would use that phrase with my work.
