http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/22/joe-thomas-does-long-term-deal-with-browns/ Jake Long will no doubt cost even more being the superior LT and the fact his deal probably won't be until next year. Jake is going to be a very very rich man. $30 million when he first signed and he could crack $50 million come next season to extend his contract. At this rate he'll retire owning the team ;p
Not really. Jake is a mauler and Thomas is finesse, and they both get it done excellently in pass protection. However, in run blocking Jake blows him away.
Give or take though, one is not that much better than the other....I would gladly take either or, actually Thomas has less wear and tear on his body than Long now...but overall it is a nice problem to have... well not anymore seeing Holmgren just screwed us by this deal.....
Joe's played an extra year already and despite having a seperated shoulder Jake still led the league according to PFF: http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2011/06/13/2010-pass-blocking-efficiency-tackles/
I would say if you asked anyone, each and every person you asked would say Long is better. As for the contract, if Long has another Long type year I would see no problem in giving him more guaranteed, hell get it done now for all I care.
dude AGAIN, I am not saying one is better than the other, they are both right there as the 2 best tackles in football, if you take Long out of Miami's line, and put Thomas in, the play I will be almost willing to guarantee isnt going to suffer if at all....and vice versa for the Browns....each is not the problem on their respective teams...
PFF ranks Thomas as only the 5th best LT last season, fwiw. 1. Andrew Whitworth 24.6 2. Jake Long 24.3 3. Doug Free 17.9 4. D'Brickashaw Ferguson 17.4 5. Joe Thomas 15.7
My point EXACTLY, I am taking Long, and Thomas, before Whitworth...forget the stats from last year...
I think your missing my point. The fact Thomas isn't and is overrated anytime someone talks about him as the "best LT" in football. It's Jake Long and then there's the next tier of Ferguson/Whitworth/Thomas and then the tier with Free, Clady etc. Like I was pointing out. The guy was the most efficient pass protector in the league and that was despite the bum shoulder that he should have never played Chicago on. Add in his run blocking ability and he's leaps and bounds the best LT. He's just a blue collar guy so he doesn't make it look as pretty as the more athletic tackles, but once Jake has his hands on you ....it's over. For the curious here's the pass efficiency for the last 3 years. http://www.profootballfocus.com/blo...r-pass-blocking-efficiency-offensive-linemen/ Honestly Colon topping that list surprised me, but it goes to show Jake is consistently top tier. By the way anyone see the guards list. Incognito...#11...who woulda thunk it?
well its objective on your part since you announced some time ago that you are not even a dolphins fan...right ?
Who cares? Pay the man, and pay him a crapload. He is worth it. The only offensive linemen that I would consider getting a jersey of.
I dont really like to spend money on Jerseys because Im still young and dont have that much of an income but the only jerseys I have ever owned for the Dolphins are Long and Davis and I got both their rookie years. That being said....Long has been the best player on are team and is best 1 or 2 at his position....he earned a big contract.
Steelers: Ben, Polamalu, Woodley, Mike Wallace (could even throw Timmons in there, and Aaron Smith) Pack: rodgers, Jennings, Woodson, Matthews, plus other good yound guys like Shields, BJ Raji, etc. Those two teams are loaded. And they have top 5 or 6 QB's.
You can debate Rodgers really. That's not really a knock on him either. Same for Rivers over Ben. Schaub over Ben? Won't convince me.
Really? Rodgers? I think Rodgers is better than Brady and only second to P. Manning. Don't get me wrong, Ben is a good QB, but out of the other Super Bowl winning QB's on my list, Ben's had the most help, IMO. As for Schaub, I really think he's got all the talent and intangibles but just happens to play on a team with a crappy defense. And even Marino couldn't win the big one with a crappy defense.
Well, I think Ben deserves to be at least ranked the 6th best overall QB, because he looks like Will Farrell and that goes a long ways with me. Seriously, if we could pick any of them to be an instant Dolphin, I'd probably put him 3rd after Rodgers and Rivers, due to age.
