He played in the two games last September for the Redskins. 5 carries for 2 yards.

He hasn't amounted to jack squat since 2008, so he should be well rested. Why him instead of Portis? I can only guess Portis wanted more money.

aaaawhhooooooooooo! :shifty: Guess we really wanted to save money at the #3 RB position (not sign Ricky or Ronnie who one would think would have been better than LJ).

All I know is, what does it say about the condition of Portis, or even Barber if they decided to sign LJ instead of one of them!

To be fair, Im not sure Shanahan really used him well. He doesnt really fit Shanahan's 1 cut system as he doesnt really have anything resembling elusiveness or quickness at this point in his career.

Ill tell where he may have value though:
    1. Short yardage. Him or Lex Hilliard? Thought so.
    2. Daniel Thomas specifically mentioned Larry Johnson and Steven Jackson and backs he watched/watches. Who better to learn how to be that type of back from then from the guy you most resemble in running style or wish to resemble in running style? Every back has their own unique style but sometimes watching the player you can take their style and make it your own with some adjustments whether its ball placement or learning how they see lanes etc.

I heard they offered the deal to Priest Holmes first, but Priest recommended Larry in his stead.

Pats had Portis in about a week ago; he was 15 LB's overweight..after losing 15 lbs over the last couple of weeks leading up to the workout. Safe to say Portis has called it a career judging by how hes let himself go.

I was NOT a Ryan Mallet fan...

...but we traded UP and took a guy OVER Mallet that needs so much work we had to sign LARRY GRANDMAMA JOHNSON?

Just seems like a huge waste of time.

I think I'd rather have Portis, but I hope Johnson was the right pick.

Let's not make this out to be more than it is.

We're signing him to a no-risk contract as one of the bottom players on the roster.

I was expecting this .We need a power RB to get into the endzone .

I am wondering if Polite is expendable .We have not seen much of him.

I'll be concerned that something is wrong with Thomas if he actually a) doesn't produce in the regular season and/or b) doesn't get opportunities to impress in the regular season.

I wouldn't even be surprised if Larry Johnson doesn't make this team, but regardless is it really such a crime to cut Kory Sheets and sign Larry Johnson? While it may not be a net gain, it certainly doesn't seem like a net loss either at the moment.

I'll be surprised if he makes it.

That's Charles Clay's roster spot now IMO. Polite would need to be a John Connor type to stick, and he does not offer that anymore.

Atleast sheets would help returning, and on special teams.....is larry johnson going to really run down and tackle someone on kickoff?!?!

I'll wait and see what he has left, but I'm not sure LJ makes the final roster. I see it as a situation where they were sure that Sheets wasn't what they wanted, but weren't sure if Grigsby was either or at least ready. They also were disappointed with the early goal line struggles last game. So they bring LJ in at worst as an example to the younger guys of what they want on the goal line and at best he provides depth and they send Grigsby to the practice squad.

heheh... Did you watch the last Dolphin game after the goal line drive? Did you not see Thomas running much better after that? Think he came out a little nervous for his first game ever at home, maybe? Notice he got better as the game went on?

I've never quite gotten all the love for Sheets anyway, but I don't necessarily get this signing either. I just don't see much that Johnson brings to the table other than experience, which, in his case, means being old and spent. In my mind, we've replaced one "meh" with another "meh", but at least the first "meh" had a little upside and ST potential.

I don't see this as a waste of time or a knock on Thomas. I think this staff has always made it known that thye would like to have a veteran, pound-the-ball back that could share carries with Thomas. If LJ works out (I'm skeptical) and is able to perform at even half the level that he used to I'll be jumping for joy. He's a big, bruising runner.

I'm sorry but as stated during FA I was wondering how smart it would be to gamble and depend greatly on an unknown rookie (Thomas) as our workhorse RB, and not acquire a legit experienced RB to guarantee quality considering Thomas never has played an NFL down. I don't know but it just seemed common sense...didn't think Hilliard was all that and Bush not durable enough to carry such a heavy load...

Could be another indication of a FO caught with their pants down and again finding out late they might need to fill a vital position when all the options are pretty much not available.

Ya I know we saved money......great now we can go out and pick up 2-3 more backup linemen.....

    TE ditto

Oh ya Larry Johnson by the way has been arrested four times since 2003 on various assualt charges against women.

Portis is supposedly out of shape....

Why are they panicking? Yeah Thomas hasn't practiced well, but he showed something in the game against Carolina...nothing like letting a rookie develop...geez...so they bring in washout to hinder his development now?!?!?

This team loves to do nothing more than not develop rookies...

That's what I see too, which is why I said I don't see a net loss (or gain).

I guess Sheets had some upside, but really I didn't see much STs use for him personally.
