SPARANO SENDS STRONG MESSAGE: Asked to explain why he sees this season going better than the previous two, Sparano exhibited confidence and strength in his answer. The message was a strong one he wanted to send the three other AFC East teams and the rest of Miami’s regular-season opponents.

“I can tell you that the way this team works, the attitude that I see, the ingredients that we have right now all show me that this team is poised and ready to go make a run at this thing,” Sparano said. “I’ve been pleased with what we’ve done in practice. We’re not going to back down from anybody in this division. I don’t care who they are or who’s out there, our team comes to compete every single week and they have.

“This team will compete and it’ll compete at a high level in this division. They have to. It’s a good division, but I think we’re one of the good teams in this division and I think that anybody that doesn’t believe that is probably going to make a big mistake.”

I like that kinda party....Hell yeah baby!!!!

Vontae also said he and Smith were the best Cb duo in the NFL.

Hmm, kinda limp though, Sparano should dial it up a bit.

Are we feeding the wolf or not eating the cheese?

I'd love for Sparano to come out and guarantee a victory against the Pats. He's a changed man, let's see some crazy stuff. Get into a verbal war with Rex Ryan, call jim Harbaugh a pansy, somehting. Go out in a blaze of glory.

That's ballsy. I guess we'll see week one (at home) against the Patriots, a team that outscored us 79-21 in two games played last year. Hope the team backs up Sparano's talk. Two straight losses at home to start the season would be disastrous.

I like it. Low-risk/high-reward for him, really; if the team comes out like the guns of Navarrone, he looks good; if the team comes out firing blanks, well...he had little to lose anyway.

Either way; honestly, the season can't start soon enough.

There's a reason there's no trophy for that: it doesn't matter.

It's the wrong criteria. Each season stands on its own. 7-9 and 7-9 outweighs 11-5 both by the weight of immediacy and by the individual season numbers.

Amen to that. A little more than two weeks and we'll know what's what.

It's actually good that we're starting against such a strong opponent; no questions will remain after 12 September.

Tony to me is all class. From the worst in the nfl to afc east champs, I will always have a debt of gratitude to him. I like the fact we have no "love" from the rest of the NFL, media, madden....I think we are very under-rated, pretty physical team. The Defense bas a lot to prove if they think they can be elite. Cant wait for MNF. Im interested to hear what Bill Parcells has to say.

I don't know what that means, DJ.

7-9 is a season's record. It is listed in the history books now.

To tally up wins over a three-year period, you have to do some math; even in this stat-crazy world in which everything is scrutinized, no one has tallied that...because it doesn't matter.

What matters is last season; for more context, the season before. 11-5? Truly, you'd have to consider that an anomaly, sandwiched between 1-15 and 7-9.

However you look at it, all you have to look at is written history.

Right. I'm being a pessimist because I'd rather see my head coach put up a winning season than listen to more low brow motivational speeches. Well you guys can get all riled up and tingly in your man parts that hang low all you want over some :words:

I'm judging the man based on his accomplishments last year which was a 1-7 home record including losses at home to a Jake Delhomme led Brown's squad and the Detroit Lions who had since won 2 road game in the past 3 seasons.

Did Tony's pretty speech make you all forget that? Don't let me piss on your parade. But I'm not going to cheer him on until I see him rack up some wins, beat the teams he should beat, and lead this team to the playoffs. Then I'll join in the circle jerk.

IMHO, the 11-5 season had much more to do with Chad Pennington, a cake schedule and a gimmick that caught the league by surprise than Tony Sparano as head coach. I'd love to see him prove me wrong this year.

To be fair, the context being that the further Tony Sparano's Miami Dolphins have gotten away from a veteran quarterback (Pennington) who was familiar with an offensive coordinator (Henning) who was friends with the man who made the most immediate changes to that 1-15 team (Parcells), the worse the team has looked - and that's not to say they're downright terrible, but I think you get my point. In 2009 we were 7-9 with a bad defense and finished 0-3 down the stretch. In 2010, well, that's about as mediocre as you can get. They beat some good teams (I'm not going to count the Packers game as being great a great team, as that's probably the only one you could make an argument for aside from maybe the Jets, because if we're keeping it in context, the Packers were vastly better at the end of the year and were missing a number of guys that week - Matthews, Grant, Finley, etc.) and lost to some teams they should've beaten, at home no less, with the playoffs on the line (Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit). Until Sparano notches a win this year, his team had been trending on a plateau to a sharp downward drop. Again, if we're keeping it in context, let's not let that 11-5 season against one of the softest schedule's in recent history (with plenty of bad teams we barely beat in Oakland, Seattle, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver) blind us. And in very recent terms, I had a free ticket to the Bengals vs. Panthers game tonight here in town. Cincinnati looked every bit as good as Miami did against the Panthers - which again, is why I keep harping on the Buccaneers game this weekend; it's going to be a vastly better measuring stick, in my opinion, than the Carolina Panthers were. Again, if we're keeping it in context.

I'm glad Tony Sparano came out and said that. In my opinion it's the most gusto he's shown since going for it on 4th down to finish off that Denver game in 2008. Hopefully the team responds to that. And to top it off, what a better challenge to begin the season with? A home game, against a division opponent, who happened to have the best record in the league last year that smoked us twice. Here's to hoping they come out guns blazing, as NaboCane said.

Andy Dalton's numbers were roughly equivalent to what Henne put up against Carolina. And Cincy ran the ball even a little better than we did.

Long story short, the offensive performance in that game looks alot less impressive todat than it did last sunday. You have to appreciate how atrocious Dalton and the cincy offense was in their first two games to really appreciate how bad that Carolina defense was.

Their D also shut down Cam Newton pretty well, and that D was missing 1 starter in Carlos Dunlap and another probable one in Pat Sims. I think it's more indicative of how bad the Panthers are rather than how good Miami or Cincinnati is. Again, I think we couldn't have asked for a better 3rd preseason game matchup than the Bucs.

I don't think it was any secret that Carolina was the worst team in football last season but we definitely showed signs of major improvement last week. Anyone could see that the scheme is faster and the ball is being pushed down the field at a different pace. You are comparing stats form two different preseason games to try and prove your point. It doesn't hold a lot of water.

All I know is that people went nuts over chad Henne going 15-24, for 190 against Carolina. Andy Dalton went 11-17 for 130. If you extrapolate Dalton's numbers to 24 passes they had exactly the same game.

    It is what it is

People went nuts....... Over reacting a bit aren't we now.
I think people were excited because the offense showed promise and hope. Obviously that doesn't make you happy.
Is there no limit what a fan will go to when they hate a player.
You are comparing two different preseason football games. It's laughable.

Went nuts eh? All I remember is people being happy Henne was doing the little things.....running around, moving in the pocket, keeping his eyes downfield while pressured, hitting guys in stride setting them up for YAC opportunities, no mistakes.

All those things, regardless of team he is playing, are progress. Period.

No one went "nuts" over his performance....we know who he was playing. We know it's preseason.

I don't have to point you back to the either game night thread or Paul13's "good bad and ugly" thread. You can go back and read them yourself if you're so inclined.

And for about the millionth time, I don't "hate" Henne or anybody else on the team or in the front office, much like I didn't hate fiedler, Wannsteadt, AJ Feely or Cam Cameron. I just didn't think any were particularly good at their jobs. If that classifies as "hate" to you then that's your problem, not mine.

And if you don't want to accept that Andy Dalton, a rookie who was atrocioious in his first two games put up proportionally identical numbers to Henne against the same 1st string defense of Carolina (that was actually a little better, Gamble played) puts Henne's performance into context, then again, that is your problem.

I would wager anybody on this board who is legitimately concerned about our offense, with good cause IMHO, would love nothing more than to have their concerns proven baseless. We are all Dolphin fans who spend significant time reading and posting on this board. We all want the team to win.
