It seems to me that people went "nuts" over Henne in the Dolphins first preseason game too. However, it was "nuts" in a negative way and the ones going nuts then are now trying to claim that Henne only played well because it was Carolina.

Henne had a QBR over 80 against last years top 5 Falcons defense and yet they went "nuts" over his play. Why can they go nuts over that game while not taking into consideration the top team we played, sans Long, Bush, and Marshall? LOL!

You based Henne's whole night on a phantom pick six. Hardly a fair assessment and you were called out on it as I remember.

And David Garrard put up a 50 QBR against the Falcons compared to Henne's 80. ;)

I reread those threads and never saw anybody "going nuts" with praise. The only attacking I saw was aimed at those reviews that seemed to focus on perceived errors and down play the far more plentiful positives. Even the "played decent" or "good" showing comments weren't attacked except for how they contrasted with the "played okay" and the actual analysis which clearly focused on the negative and sounded like anything but a "good" showing.

my fervent hope is that Chad Henne turns the corner & leads our team to the post-season
no more excuses, no more hysteria & panties, we'll know by game four if he's stepped up
further speculation is banter, useless banter. he has to step up & do it now

I didn't realize we were having a conversation. I pointed out that Andy Dalton put up numbers comparable to Henne against the same Carolina team. Then I was called a "hater"

I agree with you that there is more to the game than numbers and Henne's movement, etc., was better. But I just disagree that he had some bravura performance that is evidence he has massively improved.

All schmolioot is saying is that for a lot of people, last week's offensive performance against the Panthers was validation that the offense (and Chad Henne) (and Reggie Bush) (and the Offensive Line) are on the right track.

But when you see the following the very next week, some of the shine comes off that performance:

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/26/ron-rivera-very-concerned-about-panthers-defense/

At that point, you start to look at what the offense WASN'T able to do against this defense that's been acting like a sieve. For instance, until just before the half when the Panthers stuck in their 2nd string defenders, Miami had only scored 10 points and had drives end in field goal, punt and turnover on downs, despite moving the ball seemingly at will.

That's when you start to think this offense still has a lot of growing to do. Which I think we all knew already, but this Panthers "showing" against the Bengals helps slam that point home.

Fair enough, but Garrard has a history of performance that is better than Henne, even if he is nothing spectacular.

  12. Hey good for Tony to try and inspire his players and the fans with some cheerleader rha rha bullsh!t. The facts are what they are, since he has been our headcoach he has assembled a competetive team that fails to close the deal more then they do. Lets hope this season is different but I'm not jumping on any bandwagons until they show me they have a winners instinct.

Schmolioot said that people were "going nuts" (obviously a euphamism) about Henne's performance last week. You said that's not true, you didn't see anyone going nuts, just people calmly glad to have seen Henne improve in some of the "little things" areas. My chiming in was meant to drive home the point that yeah, some people really did "go nuts" about Henne's performance, to the point where opinions that Henne was "pretty decent" or "pretty good" were openly attacked for not being positive enough. It's not a big deal. Just telling you where schmolioot is coming from on that statement.

Once again, my point wasnt "who" we were playing, it was the things Henne did that seem small, but show improvement. Moving in the pocket and keeping his eyes downfield while pressured, running for chunk yardage, progressing, hitting slants and drag routes in stride for better YAC opportunities. That is far from "going nuts" with praise. I am happy to see progression, cause you know, its week 2 of the preseason with no OTAs, no mini camps and a lot of veterans with limited practice time.....that's all I am looking for. Progression.

    LOL

What do ya expect Sparano to say,, " oh golly we didn't do a good job this off season, failed to upgrade our questionable QB situation missed out on a solid workhorse RB, still trying to figure out our OL, missed out on a few really nice TE and S.....

But we have a great attitude and we will be competitive and won't be afraid of anybody...gee I'm reassured..

The guys history he rarely brings up negative situations until it's so obvious that even the homers run out of excuses....

But heck if this helps excite you ....lucky you....I guess you look for the positive wherever you can get it..

To bad we couldn't play the 16 season games against Carolina ......

What was that JJ line something like "walk the walk before you talk the talk"............

Success or failure for the team and all of us with opinions will only be proved with the reality of at least 1/2 a real season being played. So all the talk is just that, talk...positive and negative

Ok, didn't know he was referring to that thread specifically, I'll go back and read through it. From what I saw, and my own opinions on the game, it was a "ok good job, going in the right direction" happiness. Not "going nuts".

I agree that perhaps "going nuts" was a bit of hyperbole, and I don't disagree that Henne played well. In fact, I said that in the goo, bad ugly thread. (After me, CK, Nabo and others were specifically called out for not effusing praise on Henne)

I appreciate the assistance CK but I don't even know why this is becoming an issue. I didn't realize that pointing out that Andy Dalton had basically the same game against Carolina as Henne did was equivalent to saying "Henne sucks"

We all know that pre-season results and performances can be taken with a grain of salt. Pre-season is really about one thing, deciding which "on the bubble" players will make the team and which will not.

Tony's statement was a good one. He has seen his team practice well and is confident that they will play well when it counts. But again, as we all know, the success or failure of the upcoming season will primarily hinge on one thing. The success or failure of Chad Henne. Sparano will be deemed as having done a great coaching job, or a bad one based on Chad's performance.

One reason comparing stats in preseason is futile is that teams will plan to work on different things. Sparano stated that he planned to work on redzone running and then followed it up by not throwing any passes when they were in the red zone. We don't know what Cincy's plan was. We don't know if Carolina was working on different defenses schemes. So I don't see pointing out that Dalton and Henne had similar stats as saying "Henne sucks". I see it as pointing out an irrelevant and useless comparison to inaccurately imply that Henne did not play well.

I did no such thing. In fact, all I pointed out is that Carolina has made every offense look good thus far in the preseason.

Nowhere did I, or CK, or anybody, use Dalton's numbers to infer or imply that he didn't play well. All I argued was that whatever we did on offense, which includes running the ball, looked alot less impressive after seeing Cincy, a wose team than us, put us the same numbers.

And I don't buy any of this "we don't know what they were working on" stuff. Carolina's D has been a sieve the last two weeks, regardless of what either team was working on.

As I stated I have and see no basis for your assessment.

You clearly are using a useless comparison to indicate that Henne's performance which you weren't that impressed to begin with is even less impressive now.

Of course what the game plan is matters in a useless stat comparison. If Henne throws two short TDs instead of them scoring on two short runs you can't even make the comparison. What the Dolphins were working on impacted the stats regardless of whether the Carolina defense was good or bad. Or maybe Henne throws a pick six and the stats are impacted negatively. Either way "what they were working on" impacts the stats greatly. So comparing the stats without knowing what they were working on is useless.

Exactly..... Comparing stats in two separate preseason games is meaningless. That was my argument in this thread. It's pointless.

You keep saying this, but it's not true. The Carolina defense, this preseason, has given up 18 ppg. In comparison, the Dolphins "D" has given up 17, Steelers "D" 15, Ravens "D" 19...do I need to go on?

Also, arent weeks 1 and 2 normally non-gameplan weeks in preseason? And dont starters take a "game week" mentality for week 3? Having a gameplan, studying film etc etc. So wouldnt the Bengals naturally look better, or up to par with Miami who kind've went out and winged it against carolina, when the Bengals gameplanned all week?

I think Ron Rivera would disagree with this notion that because teams work on some different things in preseason it's no reason to be concerned about the overall soundness of the Panthers' defense just because they had two bad outings in a row. He admitted very bluntly that he's "very concerned" about the defense, because they were so soundly beaten two weeks in a row. If what you guys were saying was true, Ron Rivera would have no reason to be concerned about the commonality of the two defensive performances, because they should each be taken as totally separate collapses that were due to idiosyncratic aspects of each individual game. If that were the case then he would not be concerned about the defensive showing in one game, because he knows he set them to working on a specific aspect of the defense and that would come with its own consequences, and then the other game's defensive showing would not concern him either because he would know he set them to working on this other thing, which carries its own consequences.

But that simply isn't the case. Ron Rivera is "very concerned" about the defense on the backs of their two performances, and specifically pointed to the defensive line as an issue.

And while everyone is so obsessed with Chad Henne and every time schmolioot uses the word "the offense" they take it interchangeably with "Chad Henne", the fact of the matter is there's more to an offense than just Chad Henne and it was the Panthers' defensive line that proved weak a second game in a row, whereas I see Reggie Bush's and Daniel Thomas' performances against the Panthers commonly cited as reasons to be optimistic about them.

Several other posters felt that the fact that our offense was playing off the dirt while Carolina's defense was on the grass for those plays at the one yard line, was the reason for our teams difficulties. I re-watched it, and while it's hard to determine how much difference this made, it was likely at least somewhat of a factor.

Yeah. I want to see how his team measures up in a road game against a good young team that's probably looking for a little redemption after sleepwalking through much of the Patriots game last week.

They don't have to dominate like last week, and I don't expect them to. But I want to see them at least keep the play about even or a bit better. If they throw out a clunker then all the good will of last week's game will pretty much go out the window, even more so in light of what Cincy did to Carolina last evening.

Let's not forget about the overall command of the huddle. Getting to the LOS early, getting guys lined up properly, audibling, calling protections, etc. The way his teammates seem to be responding to him, the praise they are giving him, to me that speaks louder than what he did in a particular preseason game. If Henne is earning the respect and confidence of his teammates then it's his work in the film/meeting/weight rooms, at practice, AND in the games that is causing it to happen. Anyone can (attempt to) break down a meaningless preseason game, I'll trust the words and actions of Henne's teammates over what anyone on the outside looking in says. JMO.
