The Dolphins are in danger of having 5 games blacked out because they've sucked for a decade. The solution is to not suck.

If we beat NE and Houston, I'm pretty sure the later home games will start to sell out. If we don't, then there will be a problem and no "gator reunion" or any other silly idea is going to make a difference.

You know, its better not to post something like the above, because it makes you look like a fool. You really should know THE FACTS before posting.

The Dolphins ACTIVELY pursued the Hurricanes as tenants, and persuaded the Hurricanes to leave the OB, where there was an offer on the plate to share with the City of Miami, the cost of a $ 150 million renovation. The reason being as the Marlins were looking to leave Sun Life, and the Dolphins wanted them out, and to make up part of that lost revenue, was to get the Hurricanes as tenants.

But don't let facts interrupt your little Hate on the Hurricanes parade......

Especially since the Dolphins PURSUED the Hurricanes as tenants !!!! The Dolphins came to them, not the other way around. The Marlins were going to be leaving (no new stadium or not, their lease was over, they had to get out), and to make up the lost revenue, the Dolphins went after the Canes.

So going by this logic, lets say the NY Giants decide to honor a team that they have no affiliation with.........lets say the 1972 Dolphins, and decide to have a big celebration during halftime at one of the Giants game in the middle of Giants Stadium. Well than I guess going by your logic, NY Jets fans would have no basis or reason to be insulted or upset since the Jets play at someone elses stadium. Yeah that would fly real well.

HUH ???? :sidelol: I take it you don't live in South Fla ? Because if you did you'd know what is being built right on top of the old Orange Bowl site and is almost completed - http://mlb.mlb.com/fla/ballpark/webcam.jsp

I mean if you live here are you that oblivious or is this a joke ?

Yes and no, yes because we ACCEPTED the Dolphins offer, but no because its just idiotic to be doing this. To directly insult your tenant and their fans like this is unconscionable and bad business. Whether or not they are even a majority of the DolFans, Canes fans are a SIGNIFICANT number of Dolphins fans, and many of them are very angry about this.

Please tell us where that is to be built ? Do you even know anything about the Miami campus ?

When I wrote several months ago that I was not going to renew the four season tickets I have purchased for the last 30 years, some on here told me, good riddance, and that there would be plenty of Dolphin fans to buy my tickets. I noted at the time that I knew several season ticket holders who also had decided to give up their season tickets and that I expected a number of games would be blacked out this coming season. It now looks like all those Dolphin fans who were going to buy my tickets and the tickets of all the other season ticket holders who did not renew this season, failed to purchase the tickets, as many on here speculated they would. Right now the game this Thursday is blacked out and four regular season games appear to be well short of selling out.

Now the Dolphins have come up with a gimmick to honor the Gators during the Denver game in hopes that this will increase the attendance at that game. Perhaps it is time for the owner and the marketing staff to realize that Dolphin fans don't want gimmicks to show up to games. We want an organization that is no longer mediocre and a team which can actually compete for a championship.Ten years of bad to mediocre football is the reason so many of us have decided that we no longer can support this organization with our hard earned dollars.

I have received many letters and calls from the Dolphins over the last several months wanting to know why I did not renew my season tickets. I have responded each time that I am fed up with the direction of the team and that I will not attend another game until Ross replaces Ireland and Sparano with a GM and a head coach who actually know how to build a winning organization. I will miss going to the games and seeing many of the fans I have known for many years. I regret that it has come to this, but I have lost faith in the ownership, the GM, and the coaching staff. I just could no longer justify spending the thousands of dollars I have in the past, when I just don't feel that the Dolphins are anything but a mediocre team and have been for the last decade.

I hope the Dolphins prove me wrong and make me regret not buying tickets this year, but as of right now, I plan on being at the golf course on the Sunday's when the Dolphins are playing and the games are blacked out.

Not the ones that take the time out of their lives to be season ticket holders to both the Canes and the Dolphins. Its a big deal. You are out of touch with a lot of them I can say with confidence. If you have been reading the Canes message boards, and listened to local radio & TV you be saying something different.

Please explain how that question is racist?

    rac·ism   /ˈreɪsɪzəm/ [rey-siz-uhm]
    noun
    1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
    2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
    3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Ross did go to Miami Beach High (not sure if he graduated from there though) so he claims to have ties to South Fla. However he has lived between NY and Palm Beach for most of his adult life and I think he is mostly out of touch with the common ordinary fan. Thus he got very bad advice from his marketing people and probably from Nat Moore, who is "unofficially" Mr. Gator. I'm sure Moore pushed Mr. Ross on the idea, and either he was so caught up with his "Gatorness" that it made him lose sight of his bigger responsibility towards Mr Ross, or he himself is the one who thought it up and was going to do it, be damned the consequences. I think its the latter, he was going to do this and push it, even if it pissed off the Canes & Seminole fans. Moore is not stupid, I am sure he knew this would cause a firestorm, but was going to get his Gators their day of glory no matter what.

    Just my opinion.....

Yes, the Florida Marlins took the space, when UM decided to leave. Why did they decide to leave, instead of renovate the stadium themselves?

How many have decided not to purchase any more Dolphin tickets because of this?

In the same place their old stadium used to be.

And yes, I lived on the UM campus for a year, and nearby for another.

I didn't either, it does change the dynamic a bit. But still he is a businessman 1st and this is just bad for business because no matter what you do now, you have pissed off a good portion of your fanbase.

When I think of the Miami Dolphins management these days, I hear the Benny Hill theme music playing.

It seems that people who are passionate about UM are blinded by that passion and can't see how little passion there is from UM fans comparatively. Such people tend to surround themselves with like-minded folk and think the whole world is like them. I followed UM since before their first championship (I lived in S.FL for 29 years). I graduated from both UM and UF. Having seen both, the passionate alumni base isn't even close. UF sells out their games against everybody. UM sells out only when top teams come to town. I would guess that there's probably 30k - 40k that are passionate UM alumni that support the football program. I would guess that UF has about three times that number and possibly just as many as UM has in S. FL. In the end there will be just as many pissed off people as pleased people and 99% won't drop or buy Dolphin season tickets b/c of that emotion.

For those who don't think this is a big deal, just look at the numbers....76% AGAINST. And this is an area with supposedly a lot of Gator fans. Even a lot of them have been calling on the talk shows and saying its a bad, bad idea.

As for the Dolphins, win some home games, and finish better than 0-6 (last 3 of 2009 and 2010) when the playoffs are on the line and then you won't have to worry about games not selling out.

Rafael, it isn't all just about the alumni, not by a long shot. A lot of people that grew up down here, whether they went to UM, went to another college or didn't go to college at all, are big UM fans who will take this personally. The backlash speaks for itself. Ross would have been wise to consider an old medical saying, "Primum non nocere"- first, do no harm.

I'm talking about people who care enough to show up to games. Sure people will ***** and answer a poll question, but in the end 99% won't care enough to change anything. The same people who claim that they don't go to games b/c there are too many other things to do will continue to do so. It just isn't that important to them. That's not to say there's anything wrong with that. People prioritize different things. But if people aren't passionate enough about UM to care before, they're not going to suddenly become passionate b/c of this. They'll complain a bit but in the end do whatever it was they were going to do anyways.

Nabo lets be honest, where are they to put a stadium ? The Orange Bowl needed renovation, and you know the school is strapped for money, its a small private school with no state money, or religious affiliation giving it money either, so its totally on its own. (That's why what they did from the 1980's through the early 2000's is incredibly remarkable). So should they have mortgaged money they needed to upgrade the campus & medical school, so that they could have a renovated Orange Bowl, or just pay rent at Dolphin Stadium, where the Dolphins gave them huge incentives including keeping 50% of the parking revenues and 25% of the concession sales. Besides their marketing told them that a large % of their season ticket holders were living in Broward County.

I understand why they did it. But as a Canes fan, I hated that they did it. Selfishly for me I live only a 15 minute drive from the OB, and its more than an hour to get to Dolphin Stadium.

Nabo if you know the Coral Gables campus, you know that it is already 100 % in use as either dormitories, administration buildings or classroom & lab facilities. I used to work for the Physical Plant as part of Facilities Administration from 1986 to 1994. I know that campus front and back and there is no place to put a 50 to 60,000 seat stadium. They had a hard enough time finding room for the Bank United Center and had to demolish on campus housing for nearly 500 students to build it. I know as I was working for Mike White (Director of the Physical Plant) and Vic Atherton (Director of Facilities Administration) while it was being constructed.

The only place they could have used was the run down area just across Red Road (SW 57th Ave) from the campus. But back in the 1950's when that was built up, the Canes were the one and only resident of the Orange Bowl (except for some high school games) and there was never a thought about it becoming decrepit. It wasn't so much the schools fault as just circumstances happened that caused them to never build an on campus stadium.

Oh my, you are too hard to please. Ask them to win games ? You can't ask them that...they think you want glitz, glamour and over the top NON FOOTBALL STUFF. That is what is going to bring people to the games. How dare you ask them to put a decent product on the field ?

Unfortunately Tom Brady is more focused and likes to win. He will be partying that night, but probably at our Dolphins expense.

Oh I forgot, another messed up piece of this is....ta da......the Dolphins are picking up the tab, to fly in, at THE DOLPHINS EXPENSE, 20 or so of the players, INCLUDING PLAYERS THAT ARE CURRENTLY PLAYING FOR OTHER NFL TEAMS. Several are on their bye week and have agreed to come to this ill-conceived butt sucking of the Gators. That is just jaw droppingly stupid.

The local and national black eye speaks for itself. I don't know when this became an issue just about those who will or will not attend games- how the organization is perceived in general does matter quite a bit, I would think.

There were comments in the thread that said that the team was underestimating the passion of UM fans or the rivalry and that this insult would result in less Dolphin ticket purchase rather than more. I was pointing out that the number of people passionate enough to support the team by attending games and therefore passionate enough that a perceived insult would change their ticket buying behavior was fairly low.

Well did you want to help pay the universities $ 75 million part of the renovations ? As stated before the school is not even other private schools such as Notre Dame & Boston College which have the Roman Catholic Church to help pay their bills, or Duke with its enormous endowment from the Duke family, or Wake Forest & Baylor that have help from the Southern Baptist Convention. Its much like Tulane, which like Miami, has to rely solely on its endowment from donations from its alumni & friends of the university. The cost of tuition at both schools is enormous ($ 44,000 this year for Miami) and that also costs the schools more to maintain student athletes on scholarships. The U's Athletic Dept has to account for $ 3,740,000 in tuition money for its football team, whereas the Gators ($ 7,500 tuition) have to only budget for $ 637,500 for the same amount of players. The U has only about 13,500 students, as opposed to the Gators 43,000 and the alumni base is just as astronomically different. The Canes have but just over 100,000 total alumni, and the Gators produce 12-15,000 a year. That $ 75 million is extremely hard to raise even for the Gators, so how hard would it have been for Shalala to get that out of the U's friends and alums ? Nearly impossible.

The Dolphins knew this, and knew that no matter what, the Marlins were going to be out of their stadium, new ballpark or not. So they approached the U and asked them if they wanted to be their tenant instead of trying to raise a nearly impossible amount to renovate the OB.

Take being a sports fan out of it, and put yourself in President Shalala's and (former AD) Paul Dee's shoes. It doesn't take a genius to conclude the easiest way to go is with the Dolphins and Dolphin Stadium.

As a Canes fan I hate that they did it, but I do understand why they did it.

That of course can't be determined until after this season. But from a smart business point of view, why put even ONE of your loyal fans through this, if it is a problem for them. And judging from the numbers in the Sun-Sentinal poll (76% against), and the fan reaction on twitter, facebook and on message boards, it matters to a lot of fans and was a huge miscalculation by people whose job it is to KNOW that this reaction could have, and would have happened.

1st they didn't own that property, the City of Miami did and does. So they couldn't do anything without the City of Miami wanting it in the 1st place. 2nd, see above for why they decided to go elsewhere and not build a new stadium. 3rd, the some people think the City was never really committed to renovating the OB and wanted to tear it down and partner with the Marlins, which is what is happening.

While it may not in the end, end up being even more than a thousand, why do it in the 1st place ? Why cause this firestorm when it doesn't need to be done ? It's one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard of a sports team doing. Just pissing off a good portion of your solid season ticket holding fanbase to appease a "possible" few fans that might come for one game to see their living God hold a clipboard on the sidelines.

Jim you have to understand, some of the posters on here act like or actually are Dolphin employees. and will go to any lengths to shine them in a good light. Even if they pull stupid stunts like this. To them unless you are always like Jesse Agler on the Finsiders.com you are an evil, awful person who is in reality a Jets or Pats fan that posts here just to cause trouble. It never enters their minds that some people here have had the proverbial "light switch" come on and now see the Dolphins & the organization for what it is....a complete joke, and are pretty pissed off about it, because we remember a time when the Dolphins were the standard by which all other NFL teams strived to achieve. Many of the ones that even run this board are so young they can't remember those days.
