I don't get it, Revis is the best in the game. But outside of Cromartie coming up with some big plays here and there. He's not that great of a corner

I don't know if I agree with Vontae either. I do think by the end of this year VD will be considered among the best CBs in the game. But I'm not sure Sean Smith will play at a high enough level to elevate them past some of the other impressive duos around the league.

Ask Mike Williams and A. Benn how good they are from this past weekend! True, Davis and Smith may not be the best yet, but I think Vontae's boast will set the stage for their rise to the top this season. I'm excited to watch!

I love the idiocy of the writing.

    "that's not an opinion"

Ummmm yeah that pretty much is the definition of an opinion jackhole.

I predict Smith has between 5-6 interceptions and cements himself as a good cornerback in the NFL, while Davis has 3-4 interceptions... Davis will have a "DID HE JUST DO THAT?!" interception or two though, no doubt. I just think Smith will get A LOT of opportunities with Davis opposite of him and that's not a knock on Smith either.

Interceptions are all that matters to the public... they don't watch the film.

OK, so I dont want to click on the link cause I dont want him to get credit for ppl reading his article. Who did he say are 2 and 3 ahead of VD&SS?

Also, speaking of Revis... I was watching the Jets/Giants game last night and he got beat for what would have been a TD. Manning threw the ball way outside of the receiver... just a horrible pass. The announcers talked about the receiver being open and how Revis caused the bad throw because he is Revis... I was like "What did I just hear?" Cromartie also got burned deep but Manning over threw the WR.

I can understand people putting the Jets, Eagles, and Packers ahead of Miami honestly... we'll have to see what Davis/Smith do this year. I think Davis and Smith have some swagger and it will equate to some good things in 2011.

True. The don't realize that guys like Revis, Nnamdi (sp?), and Davis don't get thrown at enough to rack up a ton of interceptions. Because they're just that good.

Honestly I have no problem with others being placed over us because i don't feel were the best.

The absolutely brain dead line about his opinions being facts just bugged the hell out of me.

this sportswriter must have been very desperate for a story to follow up with this garbage. I'm not disagreeing with him, I'd rank VD and SS 4th or 5th at best, but it's still a weak article.

he also ranked Philly and gb above miami's duo. He's got a very good argument in Philly IMO as that's probably as good a trifecta as I can recall one team having with asomugha-samuel-drc.

I'm sorry I just don't put Cromartie that high on my list either. I will say though, Smith and Davis have to come up with more picks to move up higher on the list. Davis was just spitting out some confidence the other day and I like that. With wins comes respect and that applies to both sides of the ball. Doesn't matter how well either unit does unless we are winning games. Perfect example last year. We start winning and we will get some respect.

That was my thought exactly. It's not an unreasonable opinion. I even think that most people are likely to agree, but it is an opinion. Saying something that stupid makes me give the rest of the article less credence. I realize that it shouldn't, but I think it's human nature to find statements as less credible when they're preceded by obviously incorrect statements.

Sean Smith probably dropped more INTs than Asomungha had targets.

Not factoring in age, because "best in the NFL" implies right now not the future, I would trade Davis/Smith straight up for:

    Revis/Cromartie
    Asomungha/Samuel/DRC
    Woodson/Williams

and it isn't close with any of them.

I can't say they're the best but they are def top 5, and probably the best young tandem around. I like the mix of skillsets, smith to take the lanky plaxico types and davis on the smaller, quicker, santonio types. Now that we lbs who can cover vontae can blitz more. I think tha was part of why they switched sides, vd was a half step away from a sack strip vs tampa on Saturday. And with teams focused on wake off the right edge vd should have a handful of free runs at the qb off the left side.

My concern is having wake and smith on the same side vs the run. Wake is solid vs the run but if he loses contain I don't trust smith to force the ball back inside much less make the tackle. He's a very good cover guy but sean wants no part of the physical games and I expect teams to attack him on the ground until he proves he's willing to come up and smack people consisently.

Cromartie played well last year because he was more focused and put in a defensive system that suits him. But he is prone to lapses, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had a bit more of them this season. I also think if Cro was as elite as some of the media make him out to be the Jets wouldn't have gone after Asomugh. I would suspect there are some concerns there.

Who the hell cares if we get respect or not?
Being praised doesn't win football games. The fans always want players to be put on a pedestal and honored.
To me negative pub is the driving force behind motivation.

I disagree to an extent. I think a statement like that ABSOLUTELY detracts from an argument. Prefacing your thesis with drivel damages your credibility and lessens the impact of everything you say.

I agree with him is the funny thing.

I think our CB's are developing and improving with every play, and one day, hopefully soon, they will be recognized for how good they really are. I feel that after this year everyone will know their names very well.

You could have a very valid point. Let them all underestimate us so we can prove how good our CB's are on the field. I guess that's the only praise that matters.

In two seasons Davis and Smith have 6 INTs between them. Average it out, as Davis seems to want us to do with his recent claim, and that's 1.5 INTs per player, per season.

Exactly what "respect" should we expect for that?

You want Sean Smith to get respect? You kidding me? This Davis kid can ball, but Smith is horrible. He's nearly horrible in tackling and catching. Doesn't fit if he's trying to be an above average corner.

Yeah, especially if he takes the angles and avoids tackles like on that one play against the bucs...

Seriously, I don't have a problem with VD's statement. It may or may not totally accurate. Actually in my fantasy league at this point, I'll take Revis over VD. Smith needs to raise his play to that level and then we'd have the best tandem in the league. I mean VD is not Revis good, but if Smith were playing at VD's level, then you could say that the tandem of the two is better than the jests guys...

    No big deal here...

Actually no. Smith was better than Davis last year. Better on passes defensed and fewer missed tackles. And as to your other comment, I would take Smith over Cromarte.

I have no problem with Davis feeling that he and Smith are the best cornerback duo in the league. The facts though do not back up this assertion. While they have shown improved play since their rookie season and are probably in the top half of the NFL as a cornerback team. They certainly have not shown the ability to create turnovers and shut down the opposing teams passing game that is required from a great cornerback duo. If they truly want to be considered the best in the game, I would much rather see them play like the best in the league then hear Davis tells us how good they are.

So far it appears Sean Smith hasn't allowed a reception yet this preseason. Still, they'll need to get INTs. Those are game changers.
