Mando reporting that D Epps was waived but I think he has practice squad time left And there are 26 more to go
Not always. I remember Ike Holt getting a pick 6 for us in a preseason game and getting cut the next cut down. Of course it was the tail end of his career and he'd have just been a backup for us at best anyway. I think it depends which one of the two they like best. If Shuler and Mastrud were in a total dead heat, then yes, the TD may have been the deciding factor, but if Shuler was already comfortably ahead, then I think he stays there. I do not expect either one to make the team tbh. I think we will add a #2 in the next few days.
I remember Fred Russell getting a kick return for a TD on the last game and we all thought he could be the next big returner for us... but he was cut.
Mildly surprised that Epps was cut, as he appeared to be the most competent of the group of non-Fasano TEs.
There's nothing on Gerald Alexander's Twitter to indicate that he was cut. Maybe he doesn't know yet.
well I saw Jed Weaver he looks like could still play wasnt he a good blocking tightend at one time ? i really want miami to trade for a tightend; is there a chance miami could do that.
Who knows? I suspect they will take a look at Spencer Havner, a Te/Fb the packers waived as he is also a good STer.
True, that is one of the dangers of over reading what a player does in the preseason meaning they will make the roster. In this case though, with Shulers' foot injury, and Epps being waived, I have to think Mastrud is the place holder at #2 Te, subject to signing someone. Also means we go with two Te's not the typical 3 Te's which also means to me that Feinga is on the club as he doubled as the blocking Te last yr at times.
They have Shuler #2 on the depth chart, but Mastrud is the only backup TE to start games this preseason, and he played the most of the 3 last year. We do not see what they do in practice and going by just the games is not going to give a completely accurate picture of how the coaches and Ireland compare them. I like Mastrud because he is an Oregon kid, gotta support my home state, but Shuler is imo a better specimen, he worked out really well before the draft last year, and he does have an NFL pedigree. His old man was pretty good, I think that gives some insight into his upside.
I prefer Shuler tbh Mr C, think he has more tools then Mastrud, who is a poor man's Haynos imo, but with the foot and I suspect the change in offensive philosophy I think the Wr Corps has 1 or 2 roster slots this yr that they did not have last yr, in fact one of the things that got Daboll into hot water in Cleveland was going into games with 2 Rb's and like 6-7 Wr's active.
You know, for a guy who was supposedly cut, Gerald Alexander seems pretty mellow on Twitter right now. Maybe he was told he'd be re-signed after week 1?
Me too. Where before we kept 5 backs, 3 TEs and 5 Wrs, I think we could keep 2 TEs and 6 WRs, especially if one of the 5 backs is Clay who would give position versatility being able to backup both there and TE. Also if we go with 8 OL, we could keep 7 WRs, including our SNL as a RS.
I never thought I'd see the day when I'd welcome McQuistan back, but I'd MUCH rather see him on the team than Colombo.
I didn't even know he was on our team this year? I saw him in a Texans uni watching a game a couple of weeks back. Apparently they are really high on him. Why does it seem like the guys who get cut here have good careers elsewhere?
