He is a definite upgrade and a welcome addition. It's nice to know that if (god forbid) Henne goes down, the position is covered by a real player. Praise the F.O. on this great move.
I've been saying it the last three preseason games: Moore has looked GOOD out there. I just don't know about him as the #2; I don't know that he's ready for prime time if rushed into action in the regular season.
I think that Brian Hoyer and Matt Moore are kind of similar. I'll take them as #2's. But I want to do a lot better for a #1.
I'm impressed, but been a fan since he was at OSU anyway. I feel better about him as the #2 than anyone in a while.
Nah, I've seen Moore play in carolina so it is no surprise, the Qb who has surprised me is O'Connell with his running, that sort of shocked me this preseason, he had that long run called back v the Panthers and last evening there he was running around again, I'd thought he was a pocket passer.
O'Connell has looked awful, Devlin has a better upside, they need to keep Devlin as #3, you can always find another O'Connell.
Really? I haven't been impressed with Devlin, then last night he goes nuts; I tend to favor performance over a series of games over one, though. O'Connell hasn't done much either but I like him better.
Actually, I like them both, and think Devlin can develop, but like athleticism in my backup Qb's because if they are in the game, something is going wrong with the offensive line, so bring in the guy who can motor around and make things happen.
O'Connell has been around since 2008, he is what he is, you go with the young kid Devlin who has an upside. It's just my view for a #3, if you have to start your third QB you done anyway, for all I know we may add someone else who gets cut.
I usually dont talk about moving players to other positions, but I think that maybe we should move O'Connell to TE. Just saying...
Only team I can recall that went 3 deep with quality Qb's who could win week in and week out was the late 80's 49ers with Montana/Young/Bono
He's only been here a little while which really impresses me, and can only improve from here. I like his pocket presence, and his mechanics too. He was a great grab because not only is he a solid #2 he will also pressure Henne to continue to improve. #8 being on the roster can do nothing but help us.
George Wilson Jr was a joke, and his father, the head coach was a bigger joke. That's why none of them were on the roster after Shula landed. Good memory though. It's not often you hear people talk about the really old Dolphins. That shows that you are a really, really a long time and knowledgeable fan.
Keep O'Connell and send Delvin to the CFL. A year of nutrition, weights and playing in a wide open offense would help him
On the flip side, I saw Moore's weaknesses come out here in the Carolinas the last two seasons. Granted, he's looked much better this PS, maybe the system, IDK but I agree with CK, that I'd take him as my #2, but if he is our #1 we're in trouble....
I liked the Moore signing from the beginning (and said so). I think he's a good #2 who you can depend on for a few games if necessary. I heard Omar called him a poor man's Pennington and I agree with that description.
He does not have the instincts for the QB position that Penny had, not close. I agree he could be a #2 guy that comes in and doesn't embarrass himself or the team when the #1 guy goes down for a game or two. If we rely on him for anything else (like if Henne should go down) Ireland is making a call to Penny, for sure...
I don't expect anybody to call Penny unless it's for a coaching job. And I think that Moore has some nice instincts. But I don't put him in CP's class, that's why I said "poor man's Pennington".
What would he have to discuss with Penny? Get some suggestions on QBs to bring in for a workout? The glass one is not playing this season, for sure, and the odds are excellent that he never plays again.
I would not go as far as being impressed but, he is a good vet backup and an upgrade. There are just very few legit QB's out there. Look at where Indy had to go, and the number of QB's who have played in the NFL, while being close to "Grandpa's." Why is that? Does college ruin that many by not having them ready to play pro, or is it something else?
I watched the game with Cowboy commentary and they mentioned they tried to sneak Moore through waivers but that it didnt work. They were really impressed with him and lamented his loss .
I think that the NFL has been slow to adapt. The college game has always implemented things first. I remember when there was no zone defense in the NFL, just college. People swore that an NFL QB would carve up a zone. IMO it's not about college not making them NFL ready. It's about the NFL not knowing how to use the talent that's coming in. The teams that have adapted have benefitted. GB, NO, Pitt, Indy and NE would not have won if not for the spread concepts they used. That's why I'm thrilled that the Dolphins have taken a step in the right direction in terms of scheme this year.
I have to agree with you regarding Moore's play in Carolina. While he has looked decent during this preseason, the truth is that preseason games don't count for anything. So the fact that he looked okay against players who won't even be in the NFL after this weekend should certainly temper the excitement of those who think he is a quality backup QB. The reality is that Carolina, which had the worst team in the NFL last year showed no interest in him, tells me all I need to know about his ability to be a QB in the NFL. Henne played well for most of the preseason but again, these games mean absolutely nothing. So as far as I am concerned, the jury is still out on Henne as a starter in the NFL and if he reverts to the QB he has been the last two years, once the regular season starts. I don't think that Moore will prove to be the answer if Sparano decides to bench Henne once again. The offensive line and QB position are still the major areas of concern on this team, as far as I am concerned.
I've noticed the same on the OL coming out of college. For many years, they were VG run blockers and needed work in pass protection. Now, it appears to be reversed, and in the NFL as well. There are very few OL's who are good, let alone great, in run blocking. Miami was a VG example. We were at the middle of the pack but, with a negative grade (based on PFF's rank).
