Now into the 2nd qtr, and Cook is playing C. To me, he looks much better at C, and this is his best position. He made some really good blocks both run and pass, and you can see how naturally strong he is. Not easy for a DL to back him up. He gives more than he gets. The best thing that probably could have happened for his career was gotten drafted by a team without a Pro Bowl C in his prime and gotten to compete for a starting job there early on. He seems to tall to be a center, but he bends his knees very well and starts out low. He does not play tall coming off the snap.

Happy with these two pick ups. Funny thing about Cook is that he was drafted with the second round pick we sent to Minnesota for Culpepper.

Hell to the si. That is why BP and his cronies were doomed to fail from day one. This idiotic ill-conceived preference for a multifaceted roster coupled with their square pegs in round holes run-first philosophy in a passing league, sums up their tenure. They pride themselves for adding "jack of all trades" type of players but for those who don't know the other half of this saying it's: "master of none." They hold on to the NGarners & JBergers(since cut) of the world yet they are, at best, equally average at multiple line positions.

This braintrust believes Spitler can fill in at all LB spots. Yeah, too bad he sucks at all of them. Edds is not a banger near the line of scrimmage? So what. His money was suppose to be made away from the LOS running w/TEs & backs.

Good teams, competitive teams fill their roster with players who WILL one day beat out the starters, not because the first-teamer sucks but because the back-ups have legitimate nfl talent to excel. But not jeff & tony. They have collected "back-ups." The type of player who's average playing different positions.
Average work gets you average results. Thank goodness this is their last season.

I get the desire for roster flexibility. That has value in any environment where your roster is limited. I think it's most valuable in your back-ups on the lines and in your LB back ups. So in that regard Spitler over Edds might make sense. I disagree in this case however, the game has become increasingly about creating mismatches. So you have to balance those jack of all trade types with player who create mismatches and players who negate mismatches. It seems that TS has figured this out somewhat. I'm glad they finally cut ties with Cobbs. I saw him as a jack of all trades, master of none type. I see the logic in a Bush or Clay that should be a mismatch player for us. But I think that Livas could have been a mismatch player for us and that Edds was a guy who negated mismatches. I also think that coverage guys like Edds are much harder to find than thumpers like Spitler. Additionally, I just don't see Spitler as that much more versatile than Edds and I see Edds upside as much higher.

Edds was by no means successful in pass coverage this pre-season.

Isn't it about time for Edds to have cleared waivers (or not) and if so be in a position to be added to the practice squad?
No tweets from the main media guy's yet.

It should be about 24 hrs since he was waived. I've been watching, hoping too, that we see a report of Edds to our PS.

I'd expect him to be a little raw at a lot of stuff. The guy basically had it worse than the 2011 rookies did; not only did he suffer from the lockout, but he hasn't played ball in a year.

    Good point....

The guy was being considered as a starter last year before the injury and is really very raw and only played in 3-4 preseason games as a NFL player and has the instinct to be around the ball a good tackler and even leads the team in tackles and has with out doubt shown enough ability to possibly rotate in and at minimum develop....... Christ even Wannstetd wouldn't be that ignorant...........I mean come on for his third NFL game whats a guy got to do ?

In your opinion. I disagree. Why state things like they are pure fact when they are not?

In my opinion, Edds will be playing in this league long after Spitler and Mitchell are forgotten and it was flat out stupid to waive him.

Now, the Pats got him, got even for us getting the great Will Yeatman, and you can darn well figure Edds will be around long after Hunter Goodwin the 2nd is forgotten. IMO.

If it is anything like preaseaon, each tackle will be five yards down the field.

All his tackles were not 5 yds downfield. I keep seeing this ignorant ridiculous comment around here and really wonder how closely some people bother to watch preseason games.

I did watch all preseason games. Edds was one player I was wondering what people were seeing in. He looked much worse than Mitchell.

Bank it!! Or even the next Rob Ninkovich would be bad enough. We cut him a few years ago rather than Moses and here he is, turned into a solid starter, something Moses never did or ever will do, and is now out of the league. You can damned well count on Spitler being out of the NFL for years while Edds is still making plays.

If you then say all his tackles were 5 yds, or more, down field, you are either blind or a liar.

I am sorry I am not freaking out over losing a 4th round linebacker who was brought in due to his covering skills who didn't show he had covering skills during preseason and was mostly unimpressive.

Very disappointing..........and I feel your pain.....Good luck with debating these guys that see little to nothing in Edds..

If you couldn't see the talent in Edds and potential well your a Ireland... funny I was going to add a Wannstetd too but felt that even he isn't that dumb.....

Considering the Dolphins have devoted more resources to Edds than anyone else, I don't see how they couldn't see his talent and potential.

The releasing of A.J. Edds was one of another cut I didn't understand. However, I don't think Austin Spitler is a piece of garbage. I think he's a valuable guy on ST's, that has some abilities himself worth developing.

I guess you do not believe it is possible for Ireland to make a personnel judgement error. I believe it is possible.

  37. MrClean

I was less surprised he was released, but surprised nonetheless because IMO he was not our least capable backup OL. I guess they are keeping Jerry because of potential, or to save the embarrassment of waiving a 3rd rounder from a year ago. One that should have been as close to a slam dunk as a 3rd can be, considering they worked with him personally as the South team coaches at the 2010 Senior Bowl.
In other news, how are Jimmy Graham and Aaron Hernandez working out for the teams that drafted them after Jerry?

I agree, Spitler is not garbage, but just never saw anything out of him that made him remotely close to Edds. Every preseason game, Edds was all over the place, sideline to sideline, making tackles, assisting on tackles, usually always around the ball. I even saw some coverage ability. For me, other than a fumble recovering against Atlanta and a bloody nose against Dallas, Spitler seemed invisible out there for the most part.

  39. MrClean

    MrClean Inglourious Basterd Club Member

Do you expect a 1st year player, in his first training camp, to be able to have fully developed NFL level cover skills?? Edds was very impressive to me. He was seemingly always in the middle of the action. If Spitler was more impressive to you, congratulations. Jeff Ireland agrees with you.
