Take a guess where Miami falls, before reading the article. Are they top 10? Top 15? I did guess the 32nd place team correctly before reading it. Though the 31st place team surprised me just a little. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2011/30/nfl-valuations-11_land.html
Some of those surprised me where they ended up.The NY teams are understandable from because everything is overpriced in that region.I thought the Steelers would have been higher becausew of their success and popularity.
That is surprising, but they haven't been winning in a long time, and you don't see their merchandise around nearly as often as you used to. And that black hole has been nearly empty for a few years now. A lot of the worth of the teams is based on the value of their stadiums I am guessing. How they do that when municipalities own those stadiums is something I don't quite understand. I wish we knew what Forbes was using to asses the teams wealth.
At what point do we just say, "**** it!" and start calling them The Los Angeles Jaguars, regardless of where their stadium is right now? If you look at the top of that list, you see that the very top are playoff teams in major metros; then come the teams which, regardless of location, have rabid fanbases and waiting lists for season tickets (Bears, Packers, etc). Then mostly you have the smaller or split markets (Oakland, Niners) and teams which haven't contended in a while. The Holy Grail in football franchises is the top-7 market + winning/contending; after that, you can't beat winning it all or having a fanbase which clamors for tickets all the time, not just when the team is winning; Green Bay happens to have both right now. Then, after that, it's a bunch of mediocrity and outright SUCK fighting for scraps.
maybe the dolphins have lost value based on uncaring fans and lack of merchendize sales ? face the dolphins bring little to the table to the nfl in that regard.
I think if the Jags move to LA the league should force SL to give the Rams nickname back. The Cards give their nickname back to SL, and Arizona could change their name to the Arizona Apaches. Too many teams named after cats already.
Houston at #6 shocks me. I picked 16 for the Dolphins so I wasn't too schocked with their position. Atlanta at 27 is a little shocking. I had the Bills pegged for #32and was surprised the Raiders came in at 31. I guess thats what years of mismanagement and brand deterioration will do
Houston is the 4th largest city in the USA, so no surprise to me they were up there. Generally smaller market teams were lower, though not always and Houston is anything else but small market. I expected the Jags and Bills to be the last 2, in one order or the other, but I agree, Atlanta at 27 was probably the single biggest surprise. 9th largest city and being 27th may be the biggest disparity between population and value rank. Kind of curious now as to which one was, but currently too lazy to cross reference it all.
I get that Houston is a big city, but we're also talking about an NFL team less than 10 years old, who's never had a winning season, in the same state as The Cowboys, Longhorns and Sooners (yes I know Oklahoma is TECHINCALLY a different state, but we all know it's just north Texas.)
