How can this be? The experts in another thread said earlier today, that Allen sucked in the preseason and was toast. It sounded like he was done as an NFL based on their comments.
there is also a general report by barry jackson, where he mentioned that will allen was in discussion with us yesterday http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/09/14/2405877/defensive-casualty-miami-dolphins.html
I thought the last preseason game he looked pretty good, and showed some fire. I was kind of shocked he was cut.
well if we really got him back we should be lucky we got a guy who knows the defense already and is a full go, health remains the issue with him
Yes .No one is interested in him.He is done.Finished. He may be recovering from injury and be in the twilight years of his career but I think he demonstrated in his last game that he still has the saavy and instincts to play at a high level.Certainly at a higher level than the green backups we have. Its a no brainer IMO.I suspect he was cut because Sapp was willing to take a salary cut while Allen was not.
AdamSchefter Adam Schefter Will Allen has signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins and is practicing today.
If this is true, and I tend to believe it, then it offers a good lesson in sticking to your opinion even if the "rest" of the forum disagrees.. As I've said about WA, he is the best blitzing Db I've ever seen, his timing and ability to strip the ball out is/was second to none.
His experience alone will help this young secondary if he's brought back. We saw alot of poor communication out there from guys who weren't in position before the snap. Sure, that had alot to do with the no huddle, but a guy like Will Allen, with years upon years of experience, and who's basically seen it all can really help get these guys in position and on the same page.
Allen is a veteran and knows the system. It was clear that we were not only lacking physical conditioning on Monday, but mental leadership as well. Allen brings both. As it stands today, if he's healthy he could step in and cover the outside in nickel packages, allowing us to slide Vontae Davis inside to cover the slot. I'm not 100% convinced he can handle the slot duties himself, but I'm fairly certain he's miles ahead of either Bernie Sapp or Nolan Caroll in that department. I also think that Allen should have been considered as an option at Free Safety this summer. Clemoms is fair at best though unspectacular, while Jones is way too much of a gambler for my tastes. He just seems like one of those roller coaster, up-and-down, players. Also, history has shown that late-career CBs can transition to FS (Rod Woodson comes to mind), and I felt (still feel) that Allen could possibly make that transition. To me it made sense - probably too much sense - to give him a shot at FS. Still, if we can gain some veteran leadership, and bring back a guy who knows the system and can make some contributions, then the front office really should make this move. Fingers crossed.
Jeff Ireland making stupid decisions. Talent-wise who was better? Definitely not rocket science and they were under the cap at the time anyways. Mind-baffling sometimes.
Title edited to reflect this new information. I'm actually pretty excited about this move. Now let's go out and resign Lousaka Polite ...
The other thing WA accomplishes for us is now we have better insurance if VD or SS cramp up again, I like Carroll and Wilson, but think WA is just better if we have to sub either VD or SS out of the game.
I like the re-signing, but really think this might have been the plan all along, considering when they cut Sapp (thank you very much), they added a young guy for depth...
LOVE this move, Will Allen is the ultimate pro. And is vital if we try to make a run for things this year. How much you wanna bet he has a few big plays sunday?! (sack, big hit, int etc)
Agreed. I also believed he was cut for business reasons (salary) and might return this week. He's a guy who's been banged up. Made business sense to escape that guaranteed money. Glad he's back. Now the question is who else did we cut?
Sometimes I think Tony has a lot to do with it a la Patrick Cobbs/Tyrone Culver. These guys practice well but just aren't players you expect to contribute a lot on a week to week basis.
Did we have to cut anyone? King took Agnew's place on the practice squad, Allen will replace Sapp. Nolan Carroll should be doing a handstand at this news, he moves down to the Dime Back/ST role which is about his level at this point in time.
You just know he will be targeted in 3rd downs by the Texans, but I'd rather have WA out there to meet the challenge over Sapp or Carroll. WA is such a intelligent Db, he pattern reads and just runs the route for the Wr.
I am all in ro this move. Sapp didn't have it obviously on Monday. I have only 1 real reservation about the move, can he be similiar to the guy he was before his injury shut him down for over a season and a half? I think he will be fine. We aren't going to ask him to play every down and once he gets his legs back under him he will be way better than Sapp. In the meantime his leadership will be vital. His cut was more than likely all about money more than Sapp winning the job. Unfortunately you have to make money decisions in conjunction with football decisions. Doesn't always work out for the best.
Just read this in the SS story: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-will-allen-miami-dolphins-20110914,0,4564638.story Now THAT would have had me PO'd!!
I've been saying Ireland is not a good GM for a while now, glad others are starting to see the light.
Its why I have been on his case since last year. I can't ever see the pattern of where the team is going in the way he is building it. For one move he does that will help the team, he seems to make 2 that hurt it.
Really though, its worth mentioning this could have been Ireland's plan all along. With WA's injury history, I'd rather have cut him and signed him after week 1 to the unguaranteed contract as well, all while giving a couple younger guys a chance to at least see what they've got. Maybe it was, maybe it wasnt the plan. We'll never know.
While I'd like to think this is true, doubtful. Unprecedented move from Ireland. Very risky and the Pats called Will Allen for a workout pre-Pats game.
We lucked out big time there. Belichick had a non typical brain fart and didn't get Allen signed. That would have been the typical thing...BB scoops up a Miami veteran cut, then said player makes us pay the next time we play them. Maybe the worm is about to turn. If it was still the standard operational bullcrap, Allen would have been a Pat last night, had a pick 6 against us, and been a solid contributor to the Pats all season.
