In the last decade, here are the QBs to win a superbowl.

    Brady, 3 times.
    Manning, once.
    Rodgers, once.
    Big Ben, twice.
    Eli Manning, once.
    Drew Brees, once.
    Brad Johnson.once

    Great debate going on here.

I'll just say that there's never a good excuse to root for your team to lose. That's like hoping your kids drop out of high school, " At least I won't have to shell out any $$$ for college". Yeaaaahh, baby. Yeaaahh.

If we get a great QB prospect I'll be just as excited and hopeful as anyone else. But I'm not down with anointing ANYONE as a great player before they even take a snap. Last year it was Ryan Mallett the Great and Ireland was a moron for not taking him but passing on him doesn't seem like such a bad idea anymore for some reason. Now it's Luck, and before that Locker, Couch, Russell, Car, Leaf, Shuler, Boller, Akili, Klingler, Ware, Quinn, Smith, the list goes on and on. A shiny new QB promises more fans in the seats but not more wins, and that new QB will be the new scapegoat if he doesn't have a solid team and coaching staff around for support and development.

What happens if we don't get Luck, or Jones, or Barkley, etc? Are we doomed to failure? I don't think so.

I'd rather we play the season out, evaluate the players we have on the roster right now and go into next year looking to improve the roster as best we can. If that's a QB so be it. If not, that's fine too.

If I want a savior, I'll go to church.

I am an old dog. Been around many places for a long time, seen this, seen that and whatever else but this is the first time I have ever seen so many excuses given by so many for NOT drafting a potential franchise QC. Probably the single biggest missing denominator for this team for many years now. It is absolutely UN****ingreal!!!

Andrew Luck solves more problems than Chad Henne ever will. I think at some point (sooner or later) you'll realize that Chad Henne is not the long-term answer. Yeah, there's a lot wrong with this team, starting in the front office and working its way down to the coaching staff and players. But, when you re-build a team, you start at QB. It just so happens arguably the best QB prospect since Peyton Manning might (probably) be in this draft, and the Miami Dolphins at their current level of play are on a trajectory to have a chance to obtain him.

    2010: Packers, Aaron Rodgers.
    2009: Saints, Drew Brees.
    2008: Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger.
2007: Giants, Eli Manning. (Could potentially be an exception if Eli didn't step it up in the playoffs.)
    2006: Colts, Peyton Manning.
    2005: Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger.
    2004: Patriots, Tom Brady.
    2003: Patriots, Tom Brady.
2002: Bucs, Brad Johnson. (Once instance in which a defense won a championship, but see 2007 anyway.)
    2001: Patriots, Tom Brady.
2000: Ravens, Trent Dilfer. (See 2002.)
    1999: Rams, Kurt Warner.
    1998: Broncos, John Elway.
    1997: Broncos, John Elway.
    1996: Packers, Brett Favre.
    1995: Cowboys, Troy Aikman.
    1994: 49ers, Steve Young.
    1993: Cowboys, Troy Aikman.
    1992: Cowboys, Troy Aikman.

Hall of Fame quarterbacks in bold. Likely Hall of Fame quarterbacks underlined. Potential Hall of Fame quarterbacks italicized.

And I intentionally cut the list off before getting too close to the 1980s, because the whole Joe Montana thing would just be twisting the knife.

If you think this is "flawed theory," then, well, PEBKAC.

I hate the suck for luck crap. Hate fans rooting for us to lose. I will not do it......

However, at this point I won't be mad when we do lose. Maybe even a slight fist pump if this continues like it is right now...I want luck as bad as the next guy.

I'm not doing anything like that. I'm saying that as an organization they valued the position enough to trade up for it, nothing more.

So you could say in the last 19 Superbowls, the winner had a HOF Quaterback. Amazing. And we have Chad Henne.

I agree with that.... but that doesn't change the fact that we're playing terrible, sloppy football as a team right now. I'd rather win 10 or 11 games with great team play the way the Jets do than win 8 games with an elite QB on a team that plays like garbage.

Added to your point: Flacco was a 1st round pick who's not in that top group (as you say). IMO we can't rely on a 1st round QB we dont have. The Jets traded up for Sanchez at #5 (where we'd be lucky to draft this year) and he hasn't done much of anything but ride a great playing & coached team to 2 AFC Champ games. They won b/c of their team, not b/c of Sanchez. When Mark was busy playing like one of the worst QBs in the NFL, did the Jets whine and complain that their season is over until they get the next Namath in there? I seriously doubt it.

You forgot about Chris Chandler, Rich Gannon, Drew Bledsoe, Donovan McNabb, Steve McNair, Keri Collins, Jeff Hostetler, Doug Williams, Mark Rypien, Rex Grossman, Matt Hasselbeck, Neil O'donnell & Jake Delhomme. Intentionally, I assume.

I guess you could say that most of those QBs didn't win the Super Bowl but a mere trip to the big game would satisfy most us at this point.

Joe Montana was an afterthought 3rd round pick. Brady was a 6th rounder. Brees and Rodgers were passed up by just about the entire league. Kurt Warner wasn't even drafted. Steve Young was a retread on his way to a failed career until he went to a top tier franchise.

I see the point you're trying to make but it's a poorly articulated one, IMO.

We are one of the worst teams in the league. I imagine we will have a Top 5 pick in the upcoming draft. If Andrew Luck is available, I think we'd be moronic not to take him.

You know what though at some point you need to look at the quality of the prospects too. Flacco wasn't this be all end all QB pick. Sanchez many of us said would suck. Russell many people were calling on to be a bust. It's really not the same case with this year's QB. Jones has some detractors, Barkley as well, Luck some, Foles too but you can see quality from these guys. There's something special to Robert Griffin III. Honestly Matt Ryan as a prospect would be somewhere around 4-6 in this group of guys. This is a big opportunity.

If you notice very carefully, I listed the Super Bowl winners. That's sort of an important distinction. Grossman, Delhomme, Rypien, Hostetler, etc do not have Super Bowl rings because they were up against a better quarterback in the game that counted.

Football, especially post-1978, is a duel between opposing quarterbacks. That's how the NFL is structured. It's foolish not to recognize the importance of the position, and even more foolish to believe that the position can be mitigated. This is the exact philosophy Parcells implemented in 2008: how is it working out for us?

Is this really the same fan base that saw Chad Pennington come out of nowhere and quarterback the team to the playoffs? That should have made more of an impression.

I can't recall anyone really saying that. Many people thought he'd be pretty good, but honestly a lot of people liked Aaron Rodgers better hindsight or not. I couldn't understand other than that stupid Tedford argument and him being 6-2 why anyone was down on the guy.

You could do it for any position. You could point to Miami's inability with lesser quarterbacks as well.

No, I'm saying that Marino, a HOF QB was able to overcome years of bad drafting and talent acquisition because he was that good... If Miami could of done those two things well, Marino would have won a ****load of rings.

Again TP, nobody is saying the QB position guarantees superbowls. So stop pretending anyone is making that argument. We're saying (and rightly) that the QB is the vital ingredient that is almost always necessary to win. We need to begin again. And if we have a shot at Luck or the other 2 studs, we should take it.

Henne isn't our problem, he hasn't even had a chance to show how his improvements help our team because our team keeps falling on their face and refuse to help him win. Henne can't make Marshall catch the ball and can't make our defense stop opposing teams from scoring.

If you think Luck could come in and play better than Henne could with the team as it is now and just make us an instant contender then you are just being ridiculous. Brady/Manning wouldn't make our problems go away

You could, except that there aren't many people who think, say, cornerbacks are the most important position on the field.

What's really going on here is a rivalry between people who think it's better to put superior players around a quarterback, and people who think it's better to put a superior quarterback around players.

I don't think there's any question that it's extremely difficult to field teams in this era that can accumulate enough talent to overcome a lack at QB.

    1- QB
    2- HC

Let me say this, I am not rooting for this team to lose games. I am staring at reality. We have one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL, the worst secondary in the NFL, our defense makes ZERO plays, our "elite" receiver drops a touchdown per game, our special teams are awful, our coaching staff is over matched and our starting QB is hurt.

I want us to win every damn week, I just don't think we will.

Tom Brady or Manning make this team, as it stands, relevant.

A question for all the "we don't need a franchise quarterback" people. In June did you think the Colts would win their division and make noise in the playoffs? I did. Now they will be lucky to win 4 games. Tell me again why the most important position in all of professional sports is not a priority.

If you notice very carefully, Hostetler has a shiny Super Bowl XXV ring.

OK maybe its not shiny anymore and maybe he auctioned it off to pay his homeowners insurance, but you get my point.

The Steelers, Ravens, Giants, Eagles & Ravens continue to win with a defensive approach to team building. The Pats' championships all came behind elite defensive efforts.

The QB remains more important than any other single position but if you match it up vs the 11 positions which comprise a defense then it's a whole 'nother story.

You're looking at a guy that's just really that damn good. I know he's a prospect but I think it's a little fool-hardy to not go after a kid on the level of someone who could potentially become this franchise's next great QB. Miami deserves that. Enough's enough. There's nothing else in between.

I'm truly stunned that fans of this team want to maintain the status quo. The status quo that's led us to mediocrity and nothing of significance in two decades. Then the further cognitive dissonance in citing to the one successful year we've had this millennium and ignoring the phenomenal (relatively speaking) QB play we had that year (2007).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think anyone is arguing that QB is not a priority.

Some of us are saying that Andrew Luck is a prospect, not an All-Pro. And that drafting him is not a cure all for the multitude or problems that are plaguing this team.

The Steelers won with a franchise quarterback (Big Ben is damn close to being one), the Giants won with Eli, who had a damn good Super Bowl as well as a great defensive effort, the Eagles have won absolutely nothing and the Ravens won with a generational defense.

Once every decade a team "bucks the trend" and wins a Super Bowl without a franchise quarterback, the other 9 times the Super Bowl champion has a franchise quarterback.

OH, Tom Brady is a Hall of Fame quarterback, one of the greatest who has ever played the sport. In two of those "elite defensive efforts" to win Super Bowls his defense gave up 29 and 21 points.

The Dolphins are more likely to find solid players for the O-Line and Secondary through the 2nd round and later and through free agency than they are a franchise QB. (We should really go for a FS in Free Agency, but we'll worry about that later)

Let's just pretend the Dolphins do get the #1 draft pick. Are there people who wouldn't want Andrew Luck? What's the problem with drafting Luck, or even Jones if they don't get #1 overall, then using the rest of the draft and free agency to fix our other problems? It would be insane if the Dolphins didn't draft a QB in the 1st round.

But if we follow your line of thinking we end up in the same spot we are right now. Sure, we could draft a linebacker, or a tackle or a receiver or a corner or a safety but we will STILL need a quarterback. Keep ignoring the position year after year, hoping to find our guy in the 2nd round or as a free agent and never say "**** it" and give up the required resources to get the guy. You simply MUST find a quarterback to win in this league.
