His defenses give Tom Brady fits. The Browns shut down the Patriots last year and won.
And the Cowboys D played good enough to win today.
I think he is worth a look.
    Thoughts?

I thought about this a few weeks ago. But I almost wonder if he's Cam Cameron Part II, just on the defensive side of the ball. The man can coach defense though, and he gets the most out of all his players.

The Dallas defense ranks 23rd in the NFL while giving up 25.3 ppg. Dolphins have given up 26 ppg. And for people to say Dallas defense doesnt have a lot of talent is wrong.

Just because he can scheme out a defense doesn't mean he's head coaching material. The Ryan family is not exactly the Harbaugh family.

He should probably get an interview if we're going to really turn over every rock, but if we want to hire a DC, I'd rather go with Chuck Pagano.

I'd like to steal someone from the Packers or Steelers. Do they have any long time offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator that we can steal?

Already had that thought, on the Steelers there is Arians and LeBeau, both old timers, on the Packers there's Capers (no thanks) and Joe Philbin, who I think is 50ish but doesn't strike me as HC material at all.

Closest IMO would be Winston Moss, Asst HC/ILB coach for the Packers.

    Dom Capers. :shifty:

Bruce Arians will probably start getting HC interviews in a couple of years. Not sure he deserves the gig, but he'll get looks.

Yeah really. I find it mildly amusing how some guys, just respond with an emphatic "no!" with no reasoning to support their opinions. I guess it is just an irrational dislike for the Ryan clan.

Arians is already 59, he won't be getting any serious looks to be a first time HC in the next few years IMO

Keith Butler is the Pittsburgh Steelers LB coach and supposedly the guy most responsible for taking James Harrison from afterthought to Defensive Player of the year type status. He might be worth a look. Darren Perry is the DB/Secondary coach for the Packers and another name that may come up in conversation in a few years time.

The Dallas defense is 5th best in total yards allowed and lead the league in run defense. They are 17th in points allowed.

Yeah. And I don't necessarily advocate Ryan as HC, it was just a thought based his scheme against Brady today. I was just trying to start a conversation not involving Andrew Luck, seeing how my stance on that has turned me into a parasite around here....

Did you even read the rest of the post? They're 17th in the league allowing 24.2 PPG. Because of a couple of ties, that's good for 17. There are only 14 teams with better numbers. The 8 teams immediately ahead of Dallas are all within 5 points. I'm pretty sure the stats add pick 6's so Romo has kicked their D in the teeth on a number of occasions.

It's interesting that Rob has never had a really talented defense. For anyone who says Dallas has talented D, I would ask who they're referring too. My best friend is a cowboys fan and constantly talks about getting more talent on that side of the ball. Ware and Ratliff are great players but who else? They have a lot of average players on that D.

I do have a question though. Why was Rob Ryan passed over for the HC job in Oakland? Is it because Davis wanted offensive oriented coaches? I know Ryan was popular with the players there.

Do you read the post or just skim keywords to respond to? You notice the analysis?

I believe Romo has thrown at least 3 pick sixes. that's 21 of 130 points allowed. That averages out to actually allowing 21.8 PPG. That puts them at....tied for 10th with SD.

Yes, just click on defense and look at their rankings in the 4 listed categories on their team page at nfl.com
    http://www.nfl.com/teams/dallascowboys/profile?team=DAL

    Points allowed: 17th, 24.2 ppg, Yards: 5th, 307.6, Passing yards: 14th, 238.0, rushing yards: 1st, 69.6.

You're right. The problem with trying to accurately surmise a defense's effectiveness by PPG, is it includes points from blocked kicks, kick/punt returns, int returns, and also how often a defense has to overcome given a short field to defend because of turnovers in their own territory.

If you want a head coach that will try to once again minimize the quarterback position, then Rob Ryan is your man. I think he would be exactly like his brother in NY where he would run a loose ship, and the offensive game plan would simply be to not turn the ball over.

Without reading up on him before responding, I really don't know enough about him to determine whether or not he would be qualified enough to be an effective head coach. It seems his players in Dallas really love him and he seems to be quite competitive.

It would be an intriguing notion...brother versus brother twice a year....against our number one nemesis.

No. It's not that I don't think highly of Ryan as a Defensive guru; it's that after the horrid 15-year stretch we're in is over, I'd like someone who has walked the path before and can lead the team back to relevance.

I think a lot of the pining here for Ryan is tied to his brother's success and the fact that we had the chance to hire him but essentially gave him to the Jets. (thanks again, Dollar Bill)

And yards ppg can be said the same thing. How often does the offense turn the ball over on the wrong side of the 50...Well they only gave up 30 yards, but they still let up a TD.

If you go by yards the top 4 defense last year were Chargers, Steelers, Jets and Saints.

If you go by points Steelers, Packers, Ravens, Bears.

Ill take those 4 100% of the time. Hell Miami was 6th in the NFL in yards last year. And our defense was average at best.

Here's how Rob Ryan's defenses (not including the 2011 one) ranked in yards allowed:

    #30
    #27
    #3
    #22
    #27
    #31
    #22

So, no, I'll pass on Rob Ryan. And I'd wager the guess that pretty much no one would be talking about him as possible head coach material if he was called Rob Smith.

You need to put that in context. He was DC of a bad Raiders team with no talent beyond Nnamdi Asomuagh. The next gig was in Cleveland whose best player was Shaun Rogers.
