Ross loves the big name so this is a route I wouldn't rule out. Les Miles and Bob Stoops are the two most obvious choices. Any others?
Neither will leave their schools for an NFL job. Sorry...but isn't happening. Also, Miles is a bonafide ******. Yeah, he has a NC and big wins. However, he has made a living off the mad hatter fake plays nonsense. He has had just as many bone headed calls/decisions there as he has brilliant lucky plays. Stoops isn't an NFL guy. Period.
I agree with you on both counts. But there a lot of CFB analysts that believe Miles will leave LSU for the NFL at some point. Kirk Ferentz was always a hot name but his stock is waaaaaaay down.
His stock is way down because he has repeatedly said he doesn't intend to leave Iowa. I think every year there is a lot of rumors of him leaving to the NFL, he signs a big extension with Iowa. However, I wouldn't mind him coaching here. He is definitely an NFL coach playing at the college level, in my opinion.
Wait, he WILL look at or you'd like him to look at...two completely different scenarios ?? Will look at them implies they are 100%, for certain on Ross list... I don't think that any top college coach or assistant NFL coach is out of reach of Ross. He wants a big splash, that's pretty obvious. Those two names fit the bill of coaches he could look at...
That is an intriguing idea. Just don't know if he could make the successful transition from the SEC to the NFL.
Yeah, didn't he leave the SEC because of medical issues ?? The NFL would be much higher stress level than the SEC...
Blasphemy! I love the Mad Hatter. WTF moments are a pre-requisite when dealing with a crazy person. Ever dated someone of the female persuasion?
The ultimate Gator Day promotion. How can we resist? Terrible Denver will beat us to a QB, Urb comes to Tebow's rescue and South Florida Gator fans climax in unison. We'll sellout and run the spread option. Vintage Ross.
Yeah, winning two National Titles sure was pretty stressful. There are a number of rumors as to why he stepped down. I highly doubt it was because he was just too stressed.
Not all that confident in Bob Stoops, but Les Miles maybe. One guy I would look into hiring (as an OC) is Al Borges.
All kidding aside, I'd be shocked if we went the college route. Armando's article quotes them as saying "the next guy won't be learning on the job." The jump from career college head coach is probably bigger than that of an NFL coordinator. The best college coach in the land couldn't handle it here. And he was a Belichick guy and self-professed "pro coach coaching college". Jim Harbaugh is a different guy. NFL thru and thru. College was a pit stop, a bridge from his long playing career. Just like Wayne in '03, our owner is making the change a year late. Of course, if Ross hires a GM first, all bets are off. Just depends on what position they fill first.
He did have a heart attack, didn't he? They had to talk him into coming back, and it looked a lot like Jimmy in '99. Dude was burned out IMO. The NFL is even worse.
Last time we went that route it didn't end pretty. I am 100% sure Ross is going for someone who has coached in the NFL and coached in the NFL recently.
Harbaugh was an NFL guy as a player, but he had only one year of coaching experience in the NFL prior to going to college. I would fear the burn out potential on Urban Meyer, but damn if I ain't intrigued by the thought.
The game is the game. I think it's Urban's work ethic and/or personality, coped with other factors that caused him to have health problems. There was also another rumor that he'd had an affair with a co-ed, and was asked to step down amid those allegations. He seems fine in the broadcast booth, so we knew the "spend time with my family" thing was BS. Not saying this means he'd make a great NFL coach, mind you.
There aren't many of those who have the same vision that I feel Ross has for this team. Gruden is the one guy who I felt would go completely against the traditional thoughts of the NFL and run something spread out and wide open. I don't see Bill Cowher, Brian Billick, or Jeff Fisher embracing that. If Ross wants a head coach with an innovative mind, he pretty much has to go the college route.
I don't like how you guys rule out Randy Shannon as if he took a talented team with gems like Sam Shields and had them underachieving while turning a Heisman watch candidate into the laughing stock of NCAA Quarterbacks. Unless that happened, I think he should be in the discussion.
Very adamant. Miles is a good coach. He has issues, like every other coach, but he's a good one IMO. As for fake plays, depends on what you consider a fake play...
I think the route to go is hire an established NFL coach, like Mike Sherman then poach either the NFL or top college teams for OC/DC talent. Here is a list of a few that would work quite well in no particular order. OC: Jay Norvell, he is a decent playcaller and has a pretty good pedigree http://www.soonersports.com/school-bio/jay_norvell.html Bill Callahan, despite him calling the Raiders "the dumbest team in America", the man is a good OC. Laugh all you want but look at the numbers and he always had top level offensive numbers. Here is his current bio http://www.newyorkjets.com/team/coaches/bill-callahan/4a8bfdfd-fa15-48e0-872b-79d9ef1836e9 Gus Malzahn, brings the innovative offense http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/malzahn_gus00.html Mike Leach, sure his system is simple as hell but man does the guy produce http://www.texastech.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/leach_mike00.html Paul Cryst http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/chryst_paul00.html DC: Bo Pelini.....that is wishful thinking for me, he does have a good NFL pedigree though http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=1331513 Tim DeRuyter http://www.aggieathletics.com/ViewA...B_OEM_ID=27300&ATCLID=205236193&Q_SEASON=2011 Brent Venables http://www.soonersports.com/school-bio/brent_venables.html Nick Holt(more of a fringe guy) http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/holt_nick00.html
I think Gus Malzahn could do well in NFL, personally. I think Leach and Callahan are question marks. Cryst is pretty good IMO. I like Pelini a lot, I also really like DeRuyter (mainly because I'm very familiar with his stuff). Venables is a good coach IMO. Not familiar with Holt.
Nick Holt is the UW DC, and came with Sarkisian from USC. Not too much of a body of work to go off of for him, but I like what I have seen so far. Just curious alen, why are Leach and Callahan question marks as OC?
There are more than those 4 former head coaches on the unemployment line, or wanting to jump back up after being a coordinator.
Really? The talk I have heard on local talk radio stations is that Nick Holt should be fired as a UW DC.
I wouldn't throw Holt out yet. Outside of giving up 51 to Nebraska(fluke game) why get rid of him? Why not have him hire a secondary coach who can make his guys better?
Rob Ryan is the best choice by a long shot. John Gruden just signed an extension with ESPN so he is out of the picture. I also think Mike Zimmer would be an excellent fit as well.
Leach mainly because of his lack of running game. I think you need to have a strong running game unless you have a quarterback that can really carry you. As for Callahan, honestly its just been a long time since he's called plays. I think that's always a concern.
