"There wasn't much that Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano liked about his team's 24-6 loss against the New York Jets on Monday night. Once again, the Dolphins failed to score touchdowns in the red zone, coming up shot on three trips. Once again, there was ineptitude and poor execution on third down. The Dolphins converted just one of their 11 third downs. And once again, the defense—an expected strength entering the season—let the team down in key moments. The one thing Sparano did appreciate, though, was his team's effort. Though the Dolphins appeared sluggish as the score became more lopsided during the second half, Sparano didn't see it that way. "I would tell you that effort (on Monday) night was not the issue," Sparano said Tuesday. "Effort, enthusiasm, (the) physical nature of the game … none of those things were a part of the problem. "I really thought the guys played hard last night."

    More here. . .

Hmmmm, a team collectively playing hard usually results in some execution, especially with a team that does have talent on it, basically what hes saying is even though they played as hard as they could, they couldn't execute. he's got 1 week left imo, lose at home against Tebow, and I think he should step down, or get fired...regardless of how he helps the chances for Luck by being in charge, there would be too much left in the season, a season where we know were out of it, and certain decisions need to be made about the future of the team and its direction, I just don't see how motives can be pure if he continues to be the coach after a loss against denver.

I really liked Tony at one point and don't get how our team has gone to **** under his watch. I guess he just can't coach or motivate?? Players seem to like him but why can't he win....I know he is pretty conservative and makes dumb calls but is he really that freaking horrible?? I'm just tired of loosing and now it's time for him to go, whether it's the end of the year or possibly sooner. If we loose to the Broncos I'm all for firing him the next Monday. Let Nolan take the reigns the rest of the year and hope for the best or worst

Our last possession before the half. Pretty much explains it. Tony Sparano has been a complete ****tard his whole tenure here. Worst clock management I've ever seen. He's been far too conservative his whole tenure here. He's an O-line coach, he can't even give us a good O-Line. He knows nothing about x's and o's. Terrible, just terrible. And I thought Eddie Jordan and Randy Shannon were the worst head coaches I've ever seen. Tony Sparano takes the cake.

I think its proposterous to think that an owner would keep a coach on board because he's doing a good job losing games..No matter how much our owner is cognisant and wants Mr. Luck, he cannot manage a franchise like that...I keep hearing people say ''keep him on so we keep losing games'', but I don't think they are realistically thinking this thru..

What should we do with this coach if he loses the next game at home should be the question, and we should answer that question with Andrew luck as not part of the equation...

Maybe Iam wrong here, maybe GM's are really trying to sabatoge their teams because they know what it means to their franchise in this years draft, which would be either the best prospect ever, or 3 first round picks worthy of tanking...IDK man, but my mind is mushpuppie right now.

Well, to me it's likely that even though Tony is still well liked by his players, his speeches only motivated the players for a short time and now it's just bouncing off them. Just like a lot of coaches that are only effective their first year or two (herm Edwards comes to mind). And since he's piss poor at X's and O's, there's nothing left to inspire the players.

It is going on two years now where coaches and ex-players calling the games have been dumbfounded, exasperated, and outright befuddled by what they have seen from this coaching staff. The best part of this game was listening to Gruden rated G disagreement with Tony's sit on the ball to end the first half strategy. I would have loved to have heard the rated R version going on in his head.

All that is fine, but I still dont understand how a COMPETITOR cant motivate HIMSELF. I NEVER needed help getting motivated TO WIN. Surely we dont have a team, AGAIN, that has this problem.

Said it before, I'll say it again. Same old problems over and over and over again, thats coaching. 100% of the time. If the team isn't correcting their mistakes, then they're properly being coach to recognize this mistakes, and make adjustments to fix those mistakes. Tony's messages are falling on deaf ears, or they simply dont exist.

there is always a fine line between playing HARD/TIGHT and HARD/LOOSE.

Especially on offense, and our receivers (including RB/TE's) I have never watched so many guys PLAY FAST AND TIGHT and thus trip themselves up, run out of bounds with zero balance, or stumble untouched as this group.

Why? Are they playing so TIGHT and FAST they cant contain their balance?

Play LOOSE and FREE....Play WITHIN Themselves and stop TRYING SO HARD.

    Crazy!

The first time I had serious doubts about Sparano was when I heard about his 'feed the wolf' motivational campaign. That was just plain dumb, IMHO, and it was when I stopped making excuses for him. However, as much as I might think it was dumb, I can't really blame him. He was just doing what he thought was best. He was trying to light a fire under his guys. I really blame Bill Parcells. This is all his fault for hiring his football buddies to run the Dolphins instead of people who were actually qualified to do the job.

Sparano simply isn't head coach material. If Parcells was actually the football 'genius' he's supposed to be, he would have recognized that.

I always believed that Parcells hired Sparano and Ireland because he wanted people working for him that he could easily control. He didn't want to hire a coach and GM who would question him when he took over control of the team. Neither Sparano or Ireland had ever held a position in the NFL of head coach or GM. They were both happy to be promoted into these positions and they both knew that if not for Parcells, neither one of them would probably have ever been given the opportunity with any other organization. So both of them just went along with whatever Parcells wanted to do. Once Parcells realized that this team wasn't going anywhere under his leadership, he quit. This left two men in charge of the team who are clearly in over their heads in their present positions.

While Ireland and Sparano will suffer the consequences of the teams failure on the field. It was the failure of Parcells, who by hiring these two individuals in the first place is the reason the Dolphins are now one of the worst teams in the NFL. The complete failure of the Dolphins can clearly be blamed on Bill Parcells.

It wasn't a complete give-up job. I saw effort plays all the way through the end. But it was like everyone collectively just SUCKED. Guys dropping balls, missing reads, late on throws, losing gaps, etc. It's like they'd all channeled their inner Bad News Bear.

They still haven't quite played the game yet where everyone just stops caring or even trying, IMO. We still haven't seen the Week 17 game. That could happen this week though.

The fact of the matter is Sparano is not sure of him self of his team. If he was he wouldn't let 1:20 seconds run off the clock at the end of the half, he wouldn't let pass plays on 3rd and inches happen, and he wouldn't call meaningless timeouts down 20 points to conserve clock.

But he isn't the only problem, this guy has absolutely nothing to work with roster wise. Jeff Ireland continues to prove year after year that he has no ****ing clue what he's doing. If it's not a former Cowboy he want's nothing to do with the players. He has no motivation to go out and do some digging on potential free agents. And draft picks? This guy's even worse. He's taken kids in the 2nd round who don't even make the damn roster two years later. You took a kid in the first round last year, can't even get on the field! Your best pass rusher wrecked havoc on small CFL linemen and has failed to add more than a bullrush to his pass rushing repertoire. Kao Misi? The guys a stiff! Sean Smith? Does this guy have hands? Phillip Merling? The coaching staff won't even dress him!

My entire life I have never had one Miami Dolphins season where I went into it thinking we had even a remote shot at competing for the big one. And I'm tired of it. We're the Miami Dolphins, we aren't the Houston Texans. We aren't the Bungles. We aren't the Falcons. This isn't acceptable. This whole thing needs to be rebuilt again, properly. No 60+ year old executives looking for one last cheque before hitting the couch. No first time head coaches. No head coaching candidates with a history of losing games. Bring us winners, bring us players with heart, bring us guys who are 100% committed to football. And for crying out loud, get this team an athletic trainer(s) that specializes in keeping these guys hydrated. It's embarrassing.

There is only two solutions for solving the problems that are overwhelming an underwhelming team.
    1. Get rid of the entire team and start over.
    2. Get rid of the coach and general manager and start over with a new coach and new philosophy.
I know the one I would choose.

P.S. I was a supporter of Irelands until I saw the insistence that Columbo is a good option at right tackle and that swayed me. His and their refusal to acknowledge that Columbo is a bad right tackle and a weak link on the offensive line reminds me of the Wannstedt years where he absolutely refused to acknowledge bad players and bad personnel decisions.

You don't get Ws in the standings for effort. You get them for scoring more points than the other team.

Churchill said that sometimes it is not sufficient to do one's best. Sometimes one must do what is necessary.

When someone excuses a failure by saying he did his best and that is all he can do, the reaction of any employer is that he needs to hire someone whose best is better. How is our situation different?

Honestly, the best thing for Miami is to go ahead and fire Tony? Why? No matter who on this staff steps up to take over the job, this team isn't winning very many games this year. By firing Tony, you expose the person who I think is mostly responsible for the mess that is on the field - Jeff Ireland. If Tony is fired and the team still loses, Jeff can't blame Tony any longer. It is his decisions that have set up a poor roster structure and has left the team with no impact players on either side of the ball.

While its true the Players haven't given up in 2011 (yet?), like they did in Week 17 of 2010, I actually think Tony Sparano has given up and he did it 3 weeks ago during the press conference when he admitted to not having any more answers or ideas on how to fix it. He has mailed it in, openly stating he doesnt have what it takes to solve and fix this.

It is sad to watch him continue to flounder doing the same ol' same ol' cause thats all he knows - even while admitting he knows it wont change a thing. Sad!

IMO, that description really only fits one player from last Monday night, and that's Marshall. While other receivers had drops, it was Marshall who basically took himself out of the game with his pre-game declaration that he was going be thrown out in the second quarter. A more asinine thing I don't think I've ever heard a so called pro athlete say. He was powned all night by Revis because of it too. My biggest hope is that he is traded somehow/someway in the upcoming off-season. Dude is a total head case, and his physical talents will never match his ego or his idiotic comments.

As for Sparano, he is indeed dead man walking. But, my guess would be Ross gives him a long leash at this point. Especially since he's probably salivating at the prospect of getting the #1 overall pick in next year's draft. I mean, what better way to ensure it than to let Sparano continue to do what he does best...lose.

I don't see what motivation Ross or Ireland has to fire Sparano during the season. It's not like an interim replacement will coach with an eye towards the future rather than trying to win now.

NO TONY NEEDS TO STAY! He started this mess let him live with it! I don't want Nolan or anyone else coming in and winning us a few games and again screwing the franchise out of what we need more than ANYTHING else in the world. a Franchise QB! We have a chance to get one nothing needs to change at this time.

Nah, Bess was tripping himself up on routes - falling down untouched (Brain working faster than body), Hartline does it, its a common theme for many many games. Bush, Fasano, all are guilty!

Maybe you're right BDH. Honestly, it wouldn't be a hard sell on me to see 'em all replaced, with the possible exception of Bess. Hartline too maybe, but I'd rather see he more as depth then anything else. To those saying we are set at receiver, or that it is a strength, I just don't see it. These guys couldn't catch a cold if their lives depended on it. And, they just seem to disappear when the game is on the line.

yeah, not advocating that we need them replaced as players...wondering out-loud, if this STAFF is somehow contributing and these players are trying to compensate, or trying to do to much to compensate for those players that are the weakest link, etc.

Its uncanny how we beat ourselves long before the opposition impacts what we do. uncanny.
