After last nights bore fest on mnf I'm not surprised Gruden wants to go... my God the NFL doesn't know how to schedule primetime games.
It's Jason Cole, but that to me solidifies what I thought would be the case about this notion that Jon Gruden is now "off the table" because of his ESPN extension. Gruden and Cowher are both looking at Miami. They're not fools, they know Andrew Luck could be coming here.
Coaches look like geniuses when they have an elite QB. If we get luck, we'll have the pick of the coaching litter.
Gruden or Cowher? Put yourself in Stephen Ross' shoes and try and make that call. I think personally, if we were in position to draft Andrew Luck, I'd probably lean Gruden. Then again, Cowher's teams were known for great defenses, so if he had a QB like Luck we could have a great D AND an Elite offense. Or did I just make a great case for an NFL HC not meaning **** if you have a Superstar QB?
One aspect of this whole fiasco regarding the soon to be (at season's end, probably) active coaching search is just what Gruden proclaimed for all to hear on the MNF game. There would be a certain amount of satisfaction, and even more, notoriety, to be gained for the coach who resurrects the nearly dormant Miami Dolphins, and restores them to anywhere near the status they had under Shula. The immediate comparison would be made and cast them within the pantheon of the greatest coaches of the NFL universe were that to be the result of their assuming the leadership of the team. That would not be an inconsiderable inducement to a person with the drive to become an NFL coach.
I can't comprehend the sudden correlation between Luck and Gruden or Cowher.. This team has young talent and the regardless of what anyone says, still plays in a very desirable, beautiful market. Of course Luck gives us a POTENTIAL franchise QB, but he also brings a ton of pressure to not only develop in to an All-Pro quickly, but to win.. I think these guys would love to come to Miami with or without Luck. He isn't the only good QB in this draft, and we are far from guaranteed the 1st pick.. Just look at what happened to Indy last week.. 62-7..
Well lets do a comparison...LeBeau was with them from 92-96. 2,8,2,9, and 4th in defense. Without from 97-2003 11,7,12,6,3,16, and 15th. average 10th in the league without. Still very good. However, If I remember correctly, it was talked about how the defense wasnt the same after he left. and in 2004 when he was back they went from 15th in the league to 1st. from 2004-current 1,3,11,2,1,12,1, and 3rd. He has averaged in 13 seasons with them top 5 defense. thats unreal. Now I am not saying Cowher cant coach defense by any means, I am just stating LeBeau is the mastermind. Its well known his zone blitzing scheme changed football defenses.
HEH... maybe we'll get them both, Cowher as HC, Gruden as OC... ........ ......... ........... ........
Which would you rather have: Pressure and Andrew Luck? Or no pressure and no Andrew Luck? Bet your *** having a shot at him makes this place desirable. The test will be if we somehow win a few games, and pick 4th or 5th, if they still want to end up here.
Miami has never had a hard time luring coaching talent, and when we struck out last year, we struck out to a hometown hero that moved from Stanford to San Francisco to take over a storied franchise.. I wouldn't really call that a spurn.. As much as we think this franchise is in the dumps, Miami is still one of the most desirable markets to play and coach in.... We will land a top tier coach. If that coach refuses to join a team because they don't have Andrew Luck then good riddance, I don't want them here even if we draft Andrew Luck.
Jmho, but I think if Cowher is willing, that is who Ross would lean towards. First he's a brand name, second he's got a history with Carl Peterson and that could open the door for Peterson to get a corner office in Davie as well.... Gruden is willing and I don't believe that the extension would hold him back from getting back in, but it does afford him the opportunity to go where he wants and pretty much name his price.... That said, does anyone else think that our star would lose it's luster with either of these guys if Luck is not going to be in the picture...say, Indy or whoever gets into the fray ??
If we have the #1 draft pick after week 17 I'll be much less worried about the coach. Even though Jones and RG3 seem good, they'd obviously need some more work than Luck. If we're in position for Luck though, I'm not as worried about coach.
Gruden is intriguing because a team that he built lost in the Super Bowl, only to the team that he was coaching at the time. With Cowher, a team that he built and coached won a Super Bowl, and won another one without his coaching. So you have a guy who built a two Super Bowl team, and a guy who built a Super Bowl team, and coached a team to the Super Bowl.
This. And, if we're lucky enough to get Andrew Luck... it really won't matter if Ross hires Gruden, Cowher, or Fisher. We'd win with any of those 3.
I am curious about Jeff Fisher...he has not won a Super Bowl but came oh so close. Shula lost in the Super Bowl with the Colts then won it twice with the Dolphins...(Doesn't mean it would happen again) I guess Cowher would be my pick of the two. But really, as long as we get Andrew Luck I don't mind either of the 3.
Some of you guys KILL me!!! Jason Cole reports this so...it's good!!! Jason Cole reports something else? "Pfft, he's just a sports reporter, he doens't know"
The point in the other thread was, and I'll paraphrase; Jason Cole posting something untrue, does not make it convert to truth. Now, Jason Cole reporting truth does not change it's veracity. Right now this thread is operating as if this report is accurate and inferring what would be the result. The other thread posited that it was accurate simply because someone else reported it.
I like Jon and the thing that gets me about the anti Gruden crowd is how they like to point out that Gruden only won a Super Bowl with a team that another coach, Dungy, assembled. Forgetting that Jon put together the Oakland team that the Bucs beat, and very likely his intimate knowledge of the Raiders aided the Bucs a good deal. That Raiders team would have gone to a Super Bowl under Gruden, if not for that bullcrap tuck rule call the Patriots got in the 2001 playoffs. I found it an interesting coincidence how in the year of 9-11 terrorist attack, the team called the Patriots would defeat, albeit with the help of the officials interpretation of an obscure rule, the team called the Raiders (signifying pirates, the terrorists of 200 years ago ).
It seems to me an ideal corps of coaches would start with Jon Gruden, and then with brother Jay as OC and Zimmer as DC. Doubt we could pull both Jay and Zim away from Cincy though.
If we draft Andrew Luck why would you pick Gruden over Cowher to be the HC? Gruden never once developed a young QB in his NFL coaching career, at least Cowher won the super bowl with Big Ben.
No one. Like KB said in another thread (I'll paraphrase), he turned Rich Gannon into an MVP, won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson and got a lot out of Brian Griese. Who else did he have to work with? Shaun King and Chris Simms? I'm not worried about Gruden as a head coach. I am worried if he has authority over the entire franchise.
How does that lateral movement thing work? You have to be giving them a promotion right? So Zimmer or Jay would be brought in as an assistant head coach. Maybe we take a shot with one as head coach and the other as assistant head coach without Jon?
I like Jonny Gru but he already signed an extension with ESPN. I'll take Cowher and let him bring Steelers connections over here and built and run a team like the Steelers.
The problem is that if you're going to build a team like the Steelers, the Rooneys have to own it, not a clueless dingbat like Ross.
Either one is a step up because they have been to the big game and won it. TS would be wise to spend some time as a college HC or even as an oC in the NFL for a time. He's not a bad guy or even a bad coach (for the most part) but he needs to get his sea legs and needs to be consistent at it. Give him 4 or 5 years to get some experience and then he'll be a solid HC somewhere else, but he's got to put his time in. No one goes from O line coach to HC over night - it just doesn't happen, and if it wasn't for Tuna's enormous ego it wouldn't have happened. TS is clearly in over his head right now and its Tuna fault....by the way where is he? Exactly my point.
Cowher all night long .... tough, hard nosed, and is not afraid to innovate on offense ... lastly, hires GOOD coaches - something we have a dearth of right now! Gruden, whilst a character .... won with another man's team, even though he did have a nice run with the RAIDAS before bolting to TB.
