No, he isn't. He merely bought a house there. He also bought a home in Raleigh a couple of years ago, and he's not the Panthers HC.

Why didn't Cowher come here last off-season?

Forgive my pessimism, but everything that we hear at this point is just stuff thats put out there by agents IMO.

Ha, Ha! way to bring everything full circle.
As much as I was pro-Henne this whole offseason, and I still like him. I've moved on and have the assumption will be picking a QB in top 5 next year.
Of course, I'll be crushed, when for some stupid reason, it doesn't happen

You mean like Joe Robbie who never met a 1st round pick he didn't play hardball with and force them to miss training camp? Or Wayne, who built a Championship baseball team then gutted it? Or did the same with his hockey team? Or fired Shula and BEGGED Jimmy Johson to come back after he decided to retire by having Wanny setup as coach 1A?

That's what I thought. There are no owners that are perfect. The level of disdain towards Ross is misguided, he went after Harbaugh and if we would have landed him, would probably be sitting pretty right now.

That's fine with me. The difference between the guys is not quality/ability-wise, but personality-wise. Gruden is much more of a 'face' (some pun intended) to the organization than Cowher would be. I would be very happy, football-wise with either though... My biggest hope is that Omar Kahn comes along with Cowher...

I heard it was due to the lockout. Potential new coaches didn't want to have to build a team in one training camp.

Ross is the one who brought IRELAND with him on that plane. Your animosity is misguided. I want fewer missteps and excuses, not the next chapter.

I would be very happy with Cowher and Khan... as long as we get a franchise QB in the draft.

Can we hire him now with a title like Parcells had, let Sparano finish the season then move him down to the coaching sidelines? I know this sounds far -fetched, but if this a done deal, how do you hold off until Feb?

Omar Khan must be the most popular capologist ever. I hope Cowher also brings Pittsburgh's equipment manager (I hear that dude can do laundry like no one else) and their water boy.

Bum, I think all owners, to some extent have made fools of themselves...look at the guys in Detroit, Cincy, Arizona and Cleveland in the past....That goes without question. Ross has made more than his share tho.

First he whines about our only type of homefield advantage and gets the league to move our 1:00pm Sept and Oct games around to different times.

Then he has the failed courting of Harbaugh, which was not the issue. The issue was that not only did he not get his man, but he wasn't discreet enough to not let the press in on what he was doing and left Sparano to hang out.

Then he 'fixes' it with Tony by giving him an extension. However, the damage has been done and Tony has NO teeth whatsoever in this organization after the Harbaugh fisaco.

Then he nixes the Orton deal, which FWIW was the right thing to do, knowing that he doesn't want to restrict the new regime that's coming in after this season (which also is the right thing to do), but he is still the one that looks like an idiot for handling the situation as he does.

Now the players could care less, this season is over for them, they just need to play the season out. Everyone knows that he's shopping for a new regime now...

Finally, now it's getting out that he's already searching for a replacement (again) for TS and possibly Irish. He has no chance of being right, no matter how he handles the situation, but it's all HIS own fault. It's the right thing to do but he can't win in the eyes of the team, the coaches, the staff, the media or the fans....

In recent history, no owner has made as many blunders in such a short amount of time has he has. Some, he had/has to do for the welfare of the organization and look like bad decisions or at the least ways of doing business, but he's made his bed for this season and now has to lie in it...

I think this is the one thing that can come back to bite Ross now. If for some reason the team picks itself up off the floor and plays ball for a change and we win 4 or 5 games from here on out, our chances of securing that 1st overall pick and the supposed 'savior' of the franchise gets smaller and smaller...On top of that, even tho Cowher and/or Gruden may be ready, willing and able right now, how will not having the first overall pick make a difference for one of those name brand guys ???

What makes you say this? Is it purely speculation on your part?

Not sure I'm thrilled with the idea that he'll be joining Miami in a dramatically different role than the financial-side of football operations that he's currently undertaking in Pittsburgh. The General Manager title for someone with his background would be quite a leap.

Yeah im kinda with you on this one. Khan might be well qualified as a contract negotiator and capologist but I don't see what experience he has to qualify him as a gm. He's a 32 year old whose expertise is in the business side of things. I also am not warming to the notion that cowher will be making draft day selections if that's the case. We've been down that road before

I'm skeptical this is a closed case so quickly because first, all the "pundits" had Jim Harbaugh coming to Miami and also this "iron clad" extension for Jon Gruden doesn't even begin until next September. It was mentioned in the original press release:

    http://sportsmediajournal.com/2011/10/17/espn-jon-gruden-come-to-terms-on-five-year-extension/

Gruden will in all likelihood return to the sidelines somewhere in 2012. It would parallel what his father did when he was let go as a Notre Dame assistant when Faust took over. Jon's father waited until Jon graduated high school, taking a job selling boxes until he returned to football as an assistant with Tampa Bay. Last December on a sports podcast, Jon Jr. ("Deuce") spilled the beans saying his father was waiting until he finished his senior year in high school (this year) to make a decision while sending contacts out to Cleveland and San Francisco at the time.

    http://riseandfired.com/?p=2158

What does this mean for the Dolphins? It'll most likely be different than Wayne Huizenga basically bidding against himself to get Jimmy Johnson and Nick Saban and paying top dollar for it. Ross will have some leverage this time. If either Cowher or Gruden try to steamroll Ross saying "...or I'm going to Jacksonville", Ross can reply, "Hang on, I have the other guy on the line."

Whatever his level of experience, if he only knows as much as a casual fan then he knows the difference between a Strong Safety and a Free Safety, and he knows that a TE is more than just a sixth Offensive Lineman. And that QB is a really, REALLY important position these days.

That puts him light-years ahead of Ireland already.

There is no "Cowher to Jacksonville" rumor. That's what I'm trying to tell you. You took a report that he's buying a house in JAX and presented it as proof that he's involved as a candidate to replace Del Rio, except that there is no such rumor.

FYI, the Saints won a Super Bowl with Sean Peyton and Mickey Loomis at GM. Loomis is a cap guy, not a personnel guy. Peyton makes all the real personnel decisions.

IMO the person matters much more than the resume. I've met scouts with years of experience who could do nothing more than repeat the same info you find on every draft website. And I've met much less experienced football people who really had an eye for how players moved and how they fit into different systems. Khan may or may not have that understanding, but whether he has a personnel background is irrelevant.

one of the reasons why I want Cowher is because I can quantify how good Cowher's teams are with average QB's..Stewart...O'donnell..Tomczak..His teams played at a pretty high level with those so imagine what happens when he gets a real QB?....insert Rothlesberger here= Superbowl.

I worry a bit about Cowhers ability to make organizational decisions, however, this is what gives me hope for Cowher being in charge...He identified Dick Lebeau's talent, and aquired the coach to coach his defensive backs first, then he promoted him to be his defensive coordinator, and they were truly awesome, then Dick went to the bengals, failed as a head coach, and then was rehired...I absolutely love Dick Lebeau, and If Cowher did indeed lead that charge and promote him when he did, it gives me hope that he knows what he's doing when putting together a staff.

I don't believe Ross is stupid enough to have his people contact cowhers people...hopefully the lead comes from Cowhers people being interested in our franchise, and some Dan Marino talking to him behind the scenes..I mentioned a while back that Dan might be our ace in the hole, he loves our team, and this town, and he know how well we treat a great QB, and how much we deserve another one.

If he brings Omar Khan and Tom Moore for the short-term (maybe with Penny as his understudy), who does he bring as personal evaluation group?

Oh and by the way the 3-4 is staying if that's the case, Blitzburgh style. At least we don't have stupid requirements for 6-5 OLBs now. Look for Anthony Spencer to be a Dolphin.

Barring a turnaround by Sparano of course.

Interesting note about the Pitts defense. Pitts 3-4 front line is one of the strangest in football. It's one of the few that actually has a true NT while having two one-gap 3-4 DEs. They oppose the tackle and then shoot the B-gap. We have the absolute perfect players in Miami to do that between Randy Starks, Kendall Langford, McDaniel, Jared Odrick and Olshansky.

We need a new nose tackle though. A true NT like an Aubrayo Franklin or a Casey Hampton who I think is a free agent. Someone low to the ground rather than 6-4. That's fine it's just an exchange of cash. Expect better protection for our two ILBs who I think should survive if Cowher brings his 3-4 D here. Misi will be more productive, while Wake will have to learn to cover a bit better.

Not really. Mickey Loomis and Mike Reinfeldt are two GM's that come from a similar background, and late in Don Shula's career, Eddie Jones was his GM.

If this happens, I'm very skeptical. I can see his time off as being a good thing. I think these coaches that live at the office are crazy. And if Cowher was one of those guys I think it helped that he took time off. The thing I worry about is how incredibly well run the entire Steelers organization seems to be run. Mike Tomlin is probably a good coach, maybe very good. But the fact that he could step right in and not miss a beat all the while your moronic ******* of a QB is off screwing around I think speaks to how good their front office is.

And aside from their offensive line, they seem to be very good at acquiring talent. Can Cowher pull that off without that organization behind him? Maybe. But given how bad our front office has been for so long I don't think its a stretch to be very concerned.

Actually...if you put all of the clues we have gotten over the past few weeks.....it really does appear as though Cowher is gonna be the guy. You have talk that Marino and Shula are pretty upset at the demise of the franchise...and given that Marino and Cowher work together, you cant tell me Marino hasnt been persuading Cowher to come in and turn this around. It appears if you take Laconfora for what he says...the Cowher has even started talking personnel. We all know Ross would love having the name here, and Cowher does bring credibility to the position.....

I think the biggest thing, maybe Cowher isnt a great x's and o's coach, but his teams always seemed primed. If this turns out to be our next head coach, Ill be pretty damned excited, to be honest, even though Gruden still is my first choice...

After looking at the players required to run the Steelers defensive system, Miami should be able to pull off that Steeler's scheme with the additional of a solid true run-plugging NT. Now our DEs might not be able to drop into coverage like theirs at first, but the basic scheme that the Steelers run is not out of reach for even Miami's current personnel.

Karlos Dansby-Kevin Burnett- Koa Misi- Randy Starks- Yeremiah Bell/Reshad Jones- Chris Clemons and so on all transfer probably better to the roles of that scheme than they do in this one.
