It has little to do with production in a scene like were in currently. Its about flashing and showing the ability. There's no doubt Jimmy Graham would of flash brilliance here. He wouldn't be as productive. Realistically look at Daniel Thomas production. Not great, but hes flash and under the circumstances thats what your looking for.

It just so happens it's always an Olineman or Dlineman that is the best player available right. Always. I mean, it's not by design, it's just all chance. Jake Long. Phil Merling. Davis. Odrick. Pouncey. 4 out of 5 first rounders (yes I know, Merling is borderline). All lineman.

Absolutely, a Graham would be better with a better QB (like any receiver would), but Graham would still be a guy who could beat single coverage here. Any QB looks better when his receivers are getting open more often. Brees might hit him more often, but Henne and Moore would have hit an open Graham at least some of the time. And actually young QBs tend to rely on the TE more often than the vets. TE throws are generally easier throws and easier reads. It was negligent to not get a receiving TE for Henne. It makes life so much easier for a young QB. It is one of the main differences between Henne's situation and what all of the other young QBs that came in around the same time had. I pray that we add a receiving TE for whatever young QB we add in this draft.

This is true about Odrick. However, the move was still universly hated. Odrick is going to be a fine player, I have no doubts. But the move regardless was idiotic. We had McDaniel who could of started. He might not have been great, but DE was not an big need. But we had MANY big needs that were completely ignored.

BTW, I still, and will always think this coaching staff was completely dumb on 2 position moves. 1. Philip Merling to 3-4 DE. This move still baffles me to this day. He was simply not that kind of player. and 2. Randy Starks to NT....You take out best pass rushing and penetrating 300 pound lineman. Asked him to pull on mass for the move. And then simply thought everything was going to work itself out. I know he struggled with shedding that weight coming into this season. Im not sure what hes at, but hes not the player he was 2 seasons ago. I fail to understand this FO and coaching staffs thinking on either.

They ignore the fact that on this roster only Channing was taught and mentored by Zach. They look at the stat line and don't see anything. They see a missed tackle and lack of physical attribute and just hate on Channing.

They forget (or never knew) that in his rookie year, when Zach missed two games (against Oak and Buf) that it was Channing who made the defensive calls in Zach's place. Yes a rookie taking over for one of the smartest LBs ever.

The guy looks, talks and acts "stupid" (for comedic effect) but dude is smart as hell.

Crowder is on target with everything he said, but the most revealing thing is that even while still on the team, he and Dansby discussed the terrible decisions by Ireland.

That dispels any nonsense that the players are some kind of automaton that doesn't notice what goes on around it and blindly supports team management in the face of blunder after blunder.

Theres little doubt Channing was smart as hell. He was still an average player. He wasn't suited for this defense. Although as its been said, not having someone replace his smarts and replace his ability to get this defense in place has been missed. Same can be said about our DBs. Sparano has said last year that Clemons was very smart and got everyone where they needed to be. It has been extremely missed back there as everyone has been out of position, running around like a chicken with their head cut off..

You nailed it on every player and every frickin point. Take a look at this Cinny D:

    RE- Michael Johnson-----> Cameron Wake
RDT (three technique) Geno Atkins------> Jared Odrick or Randy Starks
LDT (one-gap nose tackle) Domato Peko-------> Paul Soliai or Randy Starks
LDE (five and six technique) Robert Geathers---------> Kendall Langford or Phillip Merling
WLB Thomas Howard------> Kevin Burnett or Karlos Dansby
    MLB Ray Maulaulga--------> Marvin Mitchell
SLB Manny Lawson------> Koa Misi or Karlos Dansby

With the exception of the MLB position we have better players across the board and they're the #2 defense in the entire NFL. I'm so damn sick of this ****. If you wanted Nolan to run a two-gap 3-4 get him the right players, otherwise realize what you should actually be doing and perform that way.

All in all,Ireland may have inadvertently built a 4-3 defense.

I agree that he certainly got better...however he won't be back. The next GM/HC will want to move on and since he's a FA anyway, it will be an easy decision for them.

Shame..I liked Henne a lot and wanted him to succeed, but I guess it is what it is...

Crowder has said things that the players believe many times. He openly stated that almost the entire lockeroom did not want Chad Henne as the starting Qb...so he says

He got that sack if I'm not mistaken playing DT, lo and behold instead of a five technique or an edge rusher.

I agree. Except I don't think Phil Merling belongs on an NFL roster period let alone being referred to as possibly better than Robert Geathers.

He needs to lose weight, maybe up until he's 270lbs. I agree that he's not better than Geathers but I honestly think Langford is an overall better player, especially the last few years. Think Randy can play a one-gap NT?

    Uhm..no.

If anyone cares to recall it, I liked Dunlap and Johnson when they were coming out the Gurus, did not, but Dunlap is a step to slow guy, he will rack up pressures but not sacks, he's a good player but not better then anyone on our defense type of player.

    8 tackles and -0- sacks?

It's a shame we never got to see Burnett-Crowder-Dansby play together in a 4-3. They'd be ideal prototypes for WLB, MLB, and SLB in a 4-3 under.

I don't disagree. HE was an average player but his smarts made the defense as a whole much much better. You better replace him with a superior athlete, or someone smarter, or better yet both.

Crowder is 100% correct. Ireland was not qualified for the GM position when Parcells hired him and all it takes to understand this is to look at how bad the Dolphins are today. Four years of Ireland selecting talent and the Dolphins are no better today then they were when Ireland took the job. The only reason Ireland got the job was because Parcells wanted someone in the GM position that he could control. Ireland was so thankful for Parcells hiring him that he just let Parcells dictate to him what to do. Once Parcells left, Ireland was completely lost and the Dolphins have completely collapsed.

As far as Crowder being bitter. I am sure he looks at the LB's on this team and knows that he is better than Misi and Burnett. The defense this year has played far worse than it did last year and one of the main reasons is that Crowder is no longer on the team. Whether Crowder has bitterness toward Ireland is really irrelevant. The fact is that went he talks about how bad a job Ireland has done in selecting talent for the Dolphins, he is absolutely correct.

Well I mean you can't really hold it against him or really in favor of him that it was against Tebow. I really do think it was the first time I saw him outside of that ridiculous edge rushing role and five technique all season. The dude is not a defensive end.

Tebow is probably one of the worst QB I ever seen moving in the pocket. If Odrick is not a defensive end then what is he? A QB?

Heck, with his size, make him a fullback...

A defensive tackle... We've seen him one game where we're not even sure if he was at defensive tackle, but we do know it was he was great at in college.

He has something like 20 pressures so far this season already.

Pads and I have been harping on the Phins talent being a better fit for a 4-3 since the middle of last season, if not earlier. We totally agree (unless Pads has changed his mind).

I just gave up talking about it because who cares if the wrong china is on the table in the dining room when the house is on fire.

Personally the 3-4 is one of the things that I view as a drawback to Cowher. I'd prefer the 4-3 simply because the majority of the teams aren't playing it right now.

Look at the Pats. They've already started the transition back. Belichek recognized the talent he had at his disposal and made the system fit the players.

We're still stuck trying to make the players fit the system.

It's not so much 4-3 versus 3-4, the gaps are more important. Do you need a true nose, do you line up your large DE on the tackle, slightly outside the tackle. We have a personnel group right now that would be best in Jim Johnson's old defense or a traditional 4-3 under. The change from that to a Wade Phillips 3-4 isn't that big of a deal. It's Parcell's old behemoth that's notoriously difficult to run. If you see Bill up in N.E. giving up on it, it's time you give up on it too. In fact Rex Ryan might give up on it pretty soon and change his approach.

Lets no forget how much we gave up to get marshall and how little regard for upgrading the te spot and how little of talent we have at cb and safety. I really despise Ireland because we let Polite go and ronnie and Ricky and we traded another draft pick for Reggie . simple rule for me if you aregoing to run a power run game you keep your fullback and your power runningback until you can replace them. we replaced Welker with Bess but Bess doesnt make the plays like welker who is a hall fame wr and bess hasnt even made it to the pro bowl yet. I like Channing Crowder the person and the player we all have been too hard on some of these guys but the blame should go more on Irelands shoulders.

Sure. Why was it a bad idea? There's absolutely loads of 1-gap, 1-technique players in the mold of Starks that have or are successful.

You keep using "let's be honest" to bolster points that don't really stand on their own, this most egregiously.

    Why?

90% of those are players who, statistically speaking, weren't likely to pan out either way. Honestly.
