Of course he's over-hyped. He could win several SBs and be in the discussion for the best NFL QB ever and he might still have not lived up to the hype. That being said, I disagree with his analysis.

I would hate to be Andrew Luck. Sure in about 6 months he's gonna be chilling on South Beach with 15 beautiful women and drinking Jay Z vodka. But he has zero margin of error on the football field. Especially if he comes here. We've already built up this dream scenario in our heads that he's going to come in turn us around overnight. He's going to be a good building block, but it's going to take time to get where we need to be. I'm just afraid that if he comes in and, you know, actually needs time to adjust to the game that the fans are going to get impatient with him and things will get ugly. He's got big shoes to fill if he comes in Dan Marino and a tough act to follow in Cam Newton, and unhealthy expectations from fans...so yeah...lot of weight on his shoulders.

So the man proudly exclaimed, "Henne's not throwing many interceptions!"

to which his friend replied, "yeah, and he's not throwing many touchdowns either"

I love when a member of the MEDIA talks about someone being "overhyped". That's like Kim Kardashian complaining about celebrities whoring themselves out for fame and attention.

To Sims credit, at least he gives reasons why he feels like he does about Andrew Luck. You might not agree with it but he states a case.

He's really only listing one reason, arm strength. He's right in that Luck doesn't have a cannon for an arm. I think everyone would agree with that statement. However, Peyton Manning was criticized coming out of Tennessee for the same reason, and JaMarcus Russell was praised for the same reason. Jeff George probably still has a howitzer, but that didn't translate into the success people thought it might.

Luck is objectively overhyped. There is no such thing as a can't-miss prospect. Luck might be a great prospect, but people are treating him like he's an guarenteed HOF quarterback from year one.

Which itself is not without reason or precedent. The term "can't miss prospect" was invented well before Andrew Luck became draft eligible. Hell, it was invented before he was conceived.

And sometimes these "can't miss" prospects actually don't miss.

No one was more hyped in any sport, ever, than LeBron James. His high school games were televised to national audiences when he was 16.

And whatever you think of his particular foibles, he actually is almost every bit as great as the hype proclaimed

Honestly there have been only two can't miss QB prospects in the modern era of football (Manning and Elway.) Small sample size but the scouts are batting 1.000 so far.

This topic is our Happy Hour discussion. No one can name any pick, in any sport, who has received more hype. A Philly fan said OJ was the closest, considering the time when it happened He remembers the Eagles losing a coin toss to the Bills, and taking the 2nd best RB in LeRoy Keys, who was moved to DB as a BUST.

Wilt, LeBron, and Lew Alcindor were mentioned from the NBA. "The Great Gretzky" was brought up as a question, as no one knows a whole lot about hockey.

    Anyone else?

Greeny, from Mike & Mike said the same this morning as the reason he liked Cam Newton better. Herm Edwards replied that it is more about accuracy, reads, and anticipation than arm strength. He used Montana as an example.

The NFL graveyard is full of rocket arm QBs who failed .Its probably one of the least important assets you look for in a QB behind accuracy, field intelligence, mobility ,vision and leadership.

Joe Montana did not have a big arm yet he had those other desirable assets and led his team to several SBs .There are many other examples .

This looks to be a non story designed to create controversy and stir up the bloggers and message boards .:wink2:

Luck is overhyped...thats the "cycle" we are in right now in the American process....soon the downturn will happen, the piling on of the "opposite viewpoint" (which Simms has also started)...its the nature of the American love/hate psychosis. We build up, to ultimately teardown, and then see how it all adds up in the end.

Asking if Luck is OVERHYPED isnt really up for debate.....knowing he is still an amazing prospect shouldnt matter from the hype standpoint, the end result PROJECTS Franchise QB success.

PROJECTIONS AND HYPE arent guarantees, he isnt perfect, but he is over hyped at this stage. I do think he has shown an NFL caliber arm, and has to date made equivalent NFL caliber throws.....thats where I disagree with where Simms is coming from.

The hype luck is getting isn't even in the same universe as the hype shaq or Lebron got. We are subject to hearing alot of hype since it is of severe interest to us but if we weren't in contention for the pick we wouldn't nearly notice the amount of hype there is.

The hype of shaq and particularily Lebron transcended the sport. Non sports fans knew of Lebron and shaq as they were coming out to play in the pros. Only ardent football fans know who luck even is.

The hype between luck and Lebron and shaq is like night and day. The hype for luck is closer to the hype strausberg got than shaq and lebron

Shaq and Patrick Ewing come to mind as well, but I would say that Lebron is the best comparison.

I never get over hyped for a guy who has yet to play an NFL down. That being said, Simms is certainly going against the grain here.

All I ask is that this team start investing in the QB position in the first round and we find a "franchise QB". Luck sure seems like one to me but I don't have the expertise Phil Simms has either.

There is a bit of an over the top type delivery on his throws, kinda like Pennington does but with obviously better velocity, so I think just the delivery itself might make some think he is not a natural thrower of the football..I also think he has the talent to change his speed when he wants, I think he is throwing catchable balls and taking velocity off on purpose, I also think his ability to anticipate so well allows him to place the ball instead of throw it..

In the NHL, Sidney Crosby was hyped every bit as much as Andrew Luck is, probably more.
He turned out to be pretty good.

Jones, Barkley, and a couple of others, may be VG or better as well. Everyone wanted a top QB from the draft but, aside from Ryan, there were none available, UNTIL NOW.

How this all plays out is going to be special for all Dolphans, with or without any Luck.

If the NFL is really AMERICA's MOST POPULAR SPORT....then the HYPE around Luck is higher by default than anyone from NBA, NHL, etc.

The HYPE around LUCK is beyond rationale...it will tone down, he will have detractors, and FANS hoping to get the #1 pick, need to put it in perspective.

Not accurate. There was a late push on Leaf, but the majority of everybody felt that Manning was the better prospect.

Don't agree with that logic. Since Football is Americas most popular does that mean it's players are the most popular? I think you would be hard pressed to find any NFL player more known than Lebron. In fact I don't think you'd find one more widely known in this country than soccer's David beckham.

Were hockey fans SFCing (Suck For Crosby) or, were they all cheering for their teams to win?

I don't know much about hockey but, have met many fans from Canada on South Beach. They are fanatics, and my impression was/is that if I suggested their teams sucking for a draft pick, I would have been PUCKED. LOL

Vick is a far more dirty word then LeBron is!

....was just making a general point....I cant prove it! LOL:lol:

Could you be any more wrong with this statement? Ryan Leaf was a headcase who was absolutely hated by his teammates. No work ethic, didn't care, just no intangibles whatsoever. Not to mention he only had one great year at Washington State while Peyton played 4 years at Tenn. Everyone knew this before the draft, hence why he was never a "can't miss prospect" or even remotely close to one. Peyton Manning was never in danger.

I was surprised. I heard the interview with Simms on Sirius NFL, he was talking about Luck being overhyped, and he was talkin about how he doesn't think he has the arms strength to make some of the bigtime NFL throws. I was surprised. That's the first time I'd ever heard anyone talk negatively about Luck.
