WHO TO ROOT FOR/AGAINST : A Miami Suck-for-Luck Fan's Guide to the 2011 NFL Season

CK started a great thread breaking down who needed to win/lose, and our chances vs. Indy in the Suck-for-Luck derby. I've turned CK's list into a guide of who we should root for to LOSE and who to root for to WIN to help our SFL chances this season. I know it gets a little more complex if any of these teams play one another, but as a general guideline here is who to root for/against this year if you are a Sucker-for-Lucker:

Teams We Want To See WIN (except against Colts)!
    ATLANTA
    BALTIMORE
    CAROLINA
    CINCINNATI
    HOUSTON
    JACKSONVILLE
    NEW ORLEANS
    PITTSBURGH
    TAMPA BAY
    TENNESSEE

Teams We Want To See LOSE (except against us)!
    BUFFALO
    DALLAS
    DENVER
    NEW ENGLAND
    NEW YORK GIANTS
    NEW YORK JETS
    OAKLAND
    PHILADELPHIA
    SAN DIEGO
    WASHINGTON

Thanks a lot for the info in your thread, CK! It made following this a lot less confusing for me.

Here's an interesting POV from 2 NFL scouts concerning how much of a kings ransom one might not have to pay to move up for Luck:

The article from Jason Cole also contains some interesting tidbits on an possible interim head coach, and even more interesting, what Peterson's involvement may mean to potential GM candidates:

I do think Indy is being smart about their pick. I don't see them drafting luck, but using the fact that they will as leverage. They know if they say they are set with Peyton, teams would would not give up as much as they would get if they go after him. Colts are a team that can win it all next year, and draft Luck does not help them short term. It's not like they have to rebuild, rather fix some holes

Something I don't think anyone has posted, has anyone thought about how the texans, jags or titans would feel about colts getting Luck? After having to deal with Manning for the last 10yrs? Maybe one of these teams lay down towards the end of year against the Colts. I'm sure they don't want to see an injustice as much as us Dolphins fans.

I agree with the jets losing one to ensure they don't have to face Luck twice a year.

Still leaves plenty of teams vying for his service, and that doesnt count mid or high ranking teams that might take a crack like the Jests or San Fran. There will be competition.

Personally, I have professed before and stand by the statement that we don't get Luck unless we pick first. I don't think we can trade for him, and that's assuming that whoever picks first is willing to trade. I think that if it came to a trade, Cleveland can easily outbid us, and I think Luck might prefer Denver and Elway. While I don't see Luck refusing to play for the team picking at first overall, if it comes to a trade I can see him being more active in putting the kibbosh on various destinations.

As arrogant as Rex Ryan is, he's gonna lay down against somebody because he's afraid to face a QB who's never played in the NFL before? Think about that for a second and tell me if you still believe it.

The higher you go up the draft order, the more ammunition those teams will need to trade up and the less likely it will be that the team who holds the pick will want to move too far down and away from the potential super blue chippers.

If get the feeling that Rex Ryan would still try to beat the Cowboys if Buddy told his sons the winner would lose their inheritance.

Realistically, it becomes even more silly when you consider that the Jets will probably need that win if they expect to have any shot of getting into the playoffs.

He's also cocky enough to think he could take his Jets and beat the AFC pro bowl squad, so I'm not sure if a guy who has never played a down in the NFL, no matter how hyped, would scare Rex enough to want to lay down.

IF they lay down, it will be out of sheer disinterest and have nothing to do with the Dolphins or Andrew Luck IMO.

Its not that he wouldnt do it because he would be afraid to play Luck 2x a year but he knows this would screw miami over. Plain and simple. His ego would be bruised but it would be good for the jets to lose. Hes a lowlife. Of course he would do it to piss us off and the miami organization.

LBJ. Luck is college senior, LBJ was a high school phenom. Luck I think will be the most hyped NFL prospect ever, but I don't think he can come close to matching Bron.

Luck is a RSJR, but fair point. The bigger question to me is who will better live up to the hype, BronBron or Andrew Luck?

Andrew Luck is a different kind of hype though.

He's a great prospect, etc.. but the only reason it's reached insane levels is because of NFL fans of teams like the Chiefs (when they were 0-3), Dolphins, Colts, etc...

Suck for Luck is responsible for some of the hype. I feel bad for Luck, honestly. Every scout agrees he's amazing, but no player should have to be hyped so much, that people start having unrealistic expectations.

Gonna be tough for anyone to ever live up to LeBron's hype. He's already had people say he'll be the best ever when its all said and done. When he gets his ring(s), and he will, it'll be hard to disagree.

Luck has a long road to hoe.

Next Sunday's Game against Redskins: Must LOSE Game!!

Ok folks, I know what you're all going to say so let me just say it before you all beat me to death over the thread title: I know...they are ALL must lose games!! But certain games we've just got to lose. I mean, sure maybe we slip up and win one against the Jets and you can kind of deal with that. But against the Redskins at home? We have just got to find a way to lose this game. It's what great losing teams do. If we want to compete with the Colts, we're going to have to dig deep and find a way to lose this one.

I know we can't get too far ahead of ourselves. If this Dolphins team looks past the Chiefs this Sunday we might just go ahead and win that game if we aren't focused on losing this week. That being said:

    Keys to the Loss:

We really have to hope the 49ers trounce the Redskins so badly this week in our Nation's capital that Shanahan has no choice to but to bench John Beck. Losing to a John Beck led team is going to prove to be as difficult as beating an Aaron Rodger's led Packers team, or a Tom Brady led Patriots team. It will present a challenge we've never dealt with before.

I believe we should prepare for the worst though. These Dolphins better game plan to lose against the Stormin' Mormon. And how will they do that?

The first step will be to start our worst QB. Phantom injury to Matt Moore. In comes J.P. Lossman (*name intentionally misspelled). Then you have Lossman watch tapes of John Beck's botched snaps against Buffalo and Cincinnati in 2007. Have him duplicate the moves in practice. Really work on fumbling the snap right into the hands of the oncoming pass rush so they can rumble on unopposed to the end zone. 2 of those and we might just have a shot at beating a John Beck led Redskins team.

If we really want to get creative, we can suit up Ray Romano at QB, and the Redskins might not even notice it's not Lossman -

    [IMG] [IMG]

The defensive side of the ball is really going to have their work cut out for them. It's not going to be easy to make John Beck look good. We'll have to present Beck with a lot of juicy check downs. Let's face it, he's going to be checking down regardless. A couple of typical missed tackles by our brilliantly awful safeties and a few of those John Beck check down specials turn into big gainers. If we can let one go for a TD and another lead to a FG, we might just put ourselves in a good position to lose this game at the end of the day.

Yeah. I think this might be the toughest game to lose that's left on the schedule. But I have faith in my boys. If they have shown one thing all year, it's the heart, desire and want to be able to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory no matter how bleak the circumstances. So I'm having faith that my boys can heroically lose this game cause its gonna be their biggest test all year

despite all the mistakes the Chiefs made in that Chargers game, they are winning lately. I don't see us beating them.
Having said that, I still can't get behind blatantly losing for our Phins to lose. If they lose, I don't get upset anymore.
But actively, rooting for them to lose like the OP, just building up bad karma IMO.

This is a BS post how could any fan want their own team to lose? I don't care who is available in the draft I find rooting for your own team to lose a bad trend. Sure right now we are not playing very well and many changes do need to take place on this team. Yes we need new management in Miami from Ireland down to all the coaching staff. Yes we desperately need a real QB which we have been passing on in Miami from a very long time. I refuse to embrace or root for the Dolphins to lose, and I couldn't blame Luck for not wanting to play for such a fan base. I believe we will beat the Redskins this coming weekend.
