"Two NFL scouts tell Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole that Oklahoma QB Landry Jones and USC QB Matt Barkley are good enough that teams won't be "desperate" enough to meet an inflated asking price for Stanford QB Andrew Luck in a potential trade for the No. 1 overall pick.
"Everybody is trying to get a quarterback, but you don't want to do it at the expense of being able to build the rest of the team," one scout said. "Sometimes you have to make the deal, like what the Giants did with Eli [Manning]. I'm not sure that's the situation here." We're not sold on Jones as an early first-rounder, but SI.com's Peter King opined Tuesday that Barkley will "almost certainly" be a top-10 pick in 2012. "

I just found this somewhat interesting, not that I necessarily agree with it though. I think Luck is a much better prospect than Manning was when he came out, but I do think the Manning trade could serve as a benchmark for any potential trade involving Andrew Luck. That draft was similar in the fact that there was three good quarterbacks coming out that year in Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger; compared to Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley, and Landry Jones. The one difference was that Eli Manning demanded a trade from the Chargers potentially damaging the Chargers asking price somewhat. I still think GM AJ Smith did a good job with the situation though, so we could see a similar trade go down. Here is the trade outlines for Eli Manning:

    Chargers recieve:
    2004 1st round pick (#4 overall) - Philip Rivers
    2004 3rd round pick (#65 overall) - Nate Keading
    2005 1st round pick (#12 overall) - Shawne Merriman
2005 5th round pick (#144 overall) - traded to Bucs

    Giants recieve:
    2004 1st round pick (#1 overall) - Eli Manning

*** I had to do a lot of research to find these details, but even still I am not 100% sure this is correct, I might be missing some later picks or players but I think this is it.***

I also read that originally the Chargers wanted DE Osi Umenyiora included in the trade, but the Giants were unwilling to part ways with him. That being said I could see us parting with Cameron Wake to make a trade for Andrew Luck, especially given his age, salary situation, and where our team is currently. I guess we will have to see how the whole situation works out, but I think this trade will be the bar for the Luck sweepstakes.

Luck is a once in a decade QB PROSPECT. If you can trade up to get him, you do it. Doesnt matter how many picks it takes.

Teams are just saying this to lower the asking price.

    Thanks for the update, UCF.

By "lot of research" do you mean Googling "Eli Manning trade"? :shifty:

You try googling it and getting the actual trade details... All I got was like analysis and why Eli asked for a trade etc, etc.

I am not disagreeing with you, but look at the Chargers deal, they got a future first, a 3rd and a 5th to move down from 1 to 4. Thats a pretty hefty price if you ask me. If we don't get the first overall pick I could see us doing a similar trade, even to go from #2 to #1 or #3 to #1. In my opinion the only real way you assure yourself Luck is by getting the 1st overall pick.

And this actually puts a price tag on what it potentially could take to get Luck. I really doubt you see a deal where its 3 1sts, a couple 2nds, and a few 3rds for Luck like some people have mentioned. This is a much more realist look at what it would take. Especially if you are moving up from a top 5 pick. It will make for an interesting draft because some people will make the argument that just staying put and taking Barkley at 2, 3, or 4 without giving up the world for Luck would make more sense from a opportunity cost standpoint.

All that being said, I still think we need to do what it takes to get Luck in a Dolphins uniform.

Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady ARE once in a decade QBs. Andrew Luck is trying to BECOME a once in a decade QB.

The details on the Eli trade were correct. They did try and get Osi Umenyiora included and the Giants said no. If thats what it took to move from 3 to 1 or something and secure Luck Id sign for it now. Luck is a once in a generation QB prospect. The last 3 guys to be viewed in this manner were Aikman, Peyton Manning, and Elway where they were this hyped and this much anticipation for their drafting. All 3 are multiple SB winners, HOFERS, and multiple all pro selections. If it takes a future first and some more picks Id do it in a heartbeat.

The real question is this: Knowing what the loss of Peyton Manning is doing to their team this year and knowing how bad they were for years before Manning, in large part because they had terrible QB play for a long time, will the Colts even be receptive to dealing the pick?

I thought Manning vehemently said he won't play for Indy if they draft Luck.

I love Luck, but I don't do the trade.

I'd go with Barkley or Jones and run with it. They are potential franchise QB's too. and I get to keep all my picks to continue to build the team with...

Todd, Manning has NOT spoken about Luck. Its all been wild speculation by people not named Peyton Manning.

No, Phil Simms said that is how he would view things if he were Manning. In other words what Simms was saying (in a very poor manner) is that if he were a star QB on Mannings level, having accomplished what Manning has accomplished he would want the pick used for other positions for a final 3-4 year run. But when has Manning ever said anything like that in his career? Hes always been Mr. Political Correctness.

I agree with Simms, though. I think if they do end up with Luck, Manning may want out.

Colts would be dumb as hell to sell their future to keep Manning.

Lol I wonder if Manning wants to comeback now just to win a few games and keep the Colts from drafting Luck. I'm sure he would love a new toy in Blackmon.

I honestly don't see any GM passing on Luck for a trade. Indy will take Luck and will trade/release Peyton.

I would gladly give up our 1st and 3rd this year, plus 1st and 3rd next year plus Cameron Wake for Luck.

I think that's pushing it. The kid doesn't have downsides right now I'll give you that but I'm not sure I see him as that special per say. Worth the #1 never a doubt, but he's not this Elway type talent people think he is. Two 1st round picks for me.

The success rate on once a decade prospects doesn't actually float well enough to justify this.
