Statements like this just make me shake my head. Nothing to root for? We won....ONE....game and now this franchise is doomed for the next 10 years.

This is still a young team, playing well is obviously important. Having some of these youngsters develop is important at this point, they need to learn how to perform well and win. We aren't going to get rid of the entire team next year, we have a lot of talent, its important for the team to remain competitive. You cannot be upset with a win, you just can't. We will be picking in the top 5 and that gives us a great shot at a franchise Qb, it doesn't have to be Luck to win a title.

Well here's what I wanna know Pads. Not that I see it happening, because I truly don't, but playing Devil's Advocate....

What happens if everything has now finally clicked, and we win out the rest of the season? And not just close medicore games, but win decisively every remaning game like we just won today?

Holy Crap Batman!!! Do we fire Sparano? Leading our team to 9 straight victories? Do we shop for another QB when Moore will have on track, 24 TD's the rest of the season? On track to score 248 points in 8 games?

Will all of the naysayers have been wrong the entire time?????

    :omg:

And what does that even mean? I mean, the high draft spots we've had in recent history....

2008: #1; Jake Long (other notable 1st round selectees...Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Mendenhall)
2007: #9; Ted Ginn Jr (other notable 1st round selectees...Brady Quinn, Darelle Revis)
2005: #2; Ronnie Brown (other notable 1st round selectees...Braylon Edwards, DeMarcus Ware, Aaron Rodgers...Kyle Orton 4th rd, Matt Cassel 7th rd)

So to me, draft postiion really doesn't mean that much. Its being smart and drafting the RIGHT player for your team. Aaron Rodgers has a Super bowl championship...and wasn't draft first overall...and i'm sure I could have sifted though the draft sheets and found others, but didn't feel like it. I was only listing notables

It's still our team. These are still our players. We are not getting Andrew Luck. But it doesn't mean we can't still get an impact player that can help us turn the franchise around with a top 3 pick.

Hell no. We need to win every Sunday. What kind of fan doesn't root for their team to win?

I will cheer for the Dolphins and they better AT LEAST win 6 games. We can do it. Raiders game is winnable, Washintgon is winnable. That's 3. We have a shot vs the Cowboys too. If our pass rush does well, MAYBE the Bills.

While I understand your view of fans who want their team to lose. The fact is that Dolphin fans are just sick and tired of seeing the Dolphins be bad to mediocre, year after year. When they went 1-15 and had the first pick in the 2008 draft, fans weren't happy that the team had the top draft pick. Because while Jake Long was a solid pick, he was definitely no Andrew Luck. True Dolphin fans fully understand that this team will continue to remain irrelevant in the NFL until they finally get a franchise QB. Andrew Luck appears to be the one player in this years draft who can make a real difference over the next decade or more. All the other QB's in the 2012 draft appear to have large question marks as to their ability to become a franchise type QB. Fans merely want the Dolphins to once again become competitive in their own division. Right now the Dolphins are the worst team in the AFC East and Luck would have given these fans a reason to believe this situation could change in the coming years.

Yes, the Dolphins may win two or three more games this season. Exactly what will this prove. It will lower their draft selection and ensure that the Dolphins remain a bad to mediocre team for several more years. All those who feel that losing to get Luck is not the right thing to do, will be the same individuals who will be lamenting the fact that Luck is the QB of a Super Bowl contender in a few years while the Dolphins are still trying to figure out how to get out of the bottom spot in the AFC East Division.

How is that ensured? There are plenty of ways to get a franchise QB aside from being gifted the most obvious one.

The last I checked, the Dolphins have not had a franchise QB since Marino retired 13 years ago. If it is as easy as you state it is to get a real franchise QB, why haven't the Dolphins done so? The fact is that their are only about five or six franchise QB's in the NFL right now and I don't see the teams who now have these franchise QB's trading them to the Dolphins. The only one that may be available is Peyton Manning, if the Colts draft Luck, With his severe neck injury, I wouldn't want the Dolphins to trade a first round pick to the Colts for him at this stage of his career.

The Dolphins are a bad team right now and it is going to take a franchise type QB to get them headed in the right direction. Even with Luck, it would take the new GM and HC at least two to three years to get the Dolphins to be competitive in the AFC East. Without Luck, I can easily see it taking another five years to turn this thing around and it is only going to be completely turned around when the Dolphins finally get the franchise QB you seem to think is so easy to get.

I hope the Dolphins trade their entire 2012 draft, plus their first pick in the 2013 to the Colts in an effort to get Luck. If you have a better solution to as to how to get a franchise QB for the Dolphins. Please let us all know, because we have been waiting for well over a decade for the Dolphins to find an answer to this problem.

Yes, there is another obvious solution to getting a franchise QB; scout well, and find one that isn't named Andrew Luck. The same way the Steelers, Packers, Patriots, etc. found their franchise QBs.

And to be clear, its not easy. Nothing is easy. If it were as easy as taking the best prospect, then there really wouldn't be much value to the game itself.

That was awesome to win a game, Kansas City got embarrassed. #1 pick or not, beating the Pats or Jets would be nice. When your record is as bad as ours, and we beat you, it's not just a defeat, it's a swift kick in the balls.

I appreciate that you realize it is not easy. In any other draft, I would agree that you take your chances and hope that you hit on a future franchise QB. This draft though is not like every other draft. It is a once in a decade draft where you have the opportunity to select a player who has every chance of being the next GREAT QB in the NFL. The Colts were a bad football team before they drafted Peyton Manning. He turned their franchise completely around and now they are willing to lose because they know that Luck will be the next Manning. The fact that their owner has already discussed openly that he would take Luck, clearly shows that he has no problem with the Colts losing and the team ending up with the first pick in the 2012 draft.

Perhaps Jones, Barkley,, or one of the other QB's in the 2012 draft will end up being a franchise QB in the future. I just happen to feel that Luck is a much surer bet then any of the other QB's coming out this season. As a long time Dolphin fan, I want to see Luck in a Dolphin uniform next season. If this makes me a bad fan, so be it. If the owner of an NFL franchise seems to have no problem with his team losing so he can draft Luck in 2012. I see absolutely no reason the fans of a team can't have the same desire for their team.

So do you have a problem with a team who is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs playing a young QB for the rest of the season to get him experience? Making the assumption that the veteran is a better player than the young QB. At that point the coaching staff isn't doing their best to win games or they would start the veteran QB.

I think there is something to be said about doing what is best for the long run despite the pain in the short run. I think there is a distinction to be made there.

I agree that we as fans shouldn't ask the players to go out and intentionally lose, and I do agree with your point in general.

No, I would have no problem with that. Using time in the game when the team has no realistic chance to be in the playoffs is evaluatation and education of the team "as it stands at that point." That is substantially different from using the team in a less than honorable fashion now to manipulate the future concerning people who are not, and may never be, on the team. As such, I would have no problem with Sparano using Devlin to see what his potential is, where his faults lie, and getting him some real game time. In such a situation as ours, that is not an unrealistic use of time. For example: Does the team have a realistic chance of winning against the Eagles? Given that I think we have a possibility of a chance of beating the Redskins, Bills and the Raiders here, I would probably start Moore. Against the Eagles - why not play Devlin with a week's prep? Against the Jests and the Cheatriots, if the team had a chance to play spoiler for each of them... it would give a great lift to the fan base here to see the team actually win - mano a mano - against detested opponents. One thing I think the SFL Mafia has lost track of is the effect that losing has in a locker room - and the hangover from year to year.

Since it is almost mathematically impossible to have a complete change of personnel in one year - encouraging a culture of quitting, losing, and just plain giving up is counter productive in the extreme. It is also completely antithetical to the warrior tradition which seems to be the primary modus operandi of most football coaching. Remember Carlin:
"In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line."

A humorous take, I know. But, that is the way most players and fans view the game. To inculcate an atmosphere of less than complete desire to win is a lethal germ in a locker room - in any sport. For fans to openly express a desire for a team to lose bespeaks more of the fan's desire for immediate gratification than an understanding of the nature of sport itself, and what the real term sportsmanship means. To tell someone that doing less than their best is acceptable is to forever decide that the person making such a statement is not worthy of the team's best. The SFL folks seem to think that such things can be turned on and off with a switch. But the reality is (and this extends into the world outside of sport as well) that once a people have started down that slope, it becomes more and more slippery with each step as once accepted norms and standards are increasingly subjected to appeasement in order achieve the abatement of the immediate momentary pain.

Oh, forgive me.. I've been working on the initial exegesis of the sermon for Sunday. That tends to make me a bit didactic.

I will never stop nor have stopped watching this team, since I can remember...

A few question for the SLF'ers...

How many Superbowls did our beloved Dan Marino win? and How many times did this glorious HOF Franchise QB take us to the promise land??? Not to criticize on Dan , I have quite a few of his memorabilia...

Having a franchise QB does not guarantee a trip to the promise land, but having a team full of talent and performers improve the odds...

I am no longer a SFLer. However, that tired argument of how many superbowls Dan won is a trash argument. You can have a team full of talent and performers and a trash QB and you have extremely terrible Odds to win a Superbowl. Having a great QB improves your odds of winning a Superbowl over any other position. You cant acquire, sign, or draft a team full of talent.

You know what makes me laugh? Thinking about our season in terms of being 1982. Suck for Elway!! It's Elway or nothing!! This organization is doomed if we can't get John the Stanford stud, best prospect the NFL has ever seen.

It actually worked out better for us to win games in 1982 and end up with the 6th QB of the draft rather than the 2nd through 5th. Just saying--- it's not worth jumping off a cliff when these prospects have yet to even see an NFL snap.

That is the sad mentality of having just an arm OZ... You know that. A lot of times the running game became a short passing game. Too often we just couldn't run the football and be balanced. We didn't finish in the Marino years. Too many damn track meets.

While I was on the SFL bandwagon, I would still rather see our team win games. However . . . . I don't see us winning more than 3 total, so there should be a decent QB available from where we'll be drafting. Our new HC/GM had just better dang well be drafting the best QB available with our first round pick!
