Dude, your wife could've named the kid Dan Marino if she wanted. That nurse was full of ****. My daughter has my last name.

Another thing they don't tell you is, you have up to one year to change the birth certificate.

I have since spoke with my wife, she said it wasn't about his actual name. It was about the sign on his carrier that he laid in at the hospital after being first born, his hospital bracelet, his newspaper clipping etc would say "baby Valverde" (her ex-husbands last name) not "Baby Cullen" (My last name)

But whatever, maybe she lied. It's ok.

Remember it's just a name too. I'm not meaning to put down any family traditions you or she may have, but the child could very well end up changing it anyway. It's not really hard to do.

As for filing for joint custody, she may be cool and have the best intentions, but what happens if she gets her dream job offered in another state? Is she going to turn it down to keep the child near your, or will she decided that if you really want to be near the child you could move too? Or, 5 years from now she marries some d-bag that wants to move. Just present it as you not wanting to take the child from her, but trying to insure that if some should happen to her that you have no legal problems getting the child right away.

As for having to have the same last name as the mother or father, I have an entirely different last name than either of my parents. My mother kept her last name and they decided to creat a new one from me and my brother. (hippies, not my name... my parents) I have never had any sort of issue with that.

The nurse was in cohoots with your wife. J/K She was wrong though.

I think my post came off as a bash of some sort. I didn't intend for it to be disrespectful and if that's how it came across I apologize. It was just me, a married guy, messing around with you, another married guy. Bro..when it comes to marriage, ALL men get "played" or tricked into it...you'll see. And have you ever heard of the saying, "No matter how good she looks, somewhere some other guy is sick of her ****." haha.

I read that during the hospital stay they try and keep it as the mothers last name to avoid miss haps. Never said they actually named the kid that.

with my first child, born previous to my wife and i getting married, on the crib and wristbands my son did not have my name, but my wifes maiden name for identification purposes. Obviously then on the birth certificate we put my last name on it, but yes IN THE HOSPITAL they will have the lasy name of the mother on everything related to the newborn.

Ive learned this the hard way from something as trivial as a lease agreement: Whatever the agreement is you need it in writing from a lawyer. She may be the sweetest woman now but wait til you piss her off just one time. Hell hath no wrath like a woman scorned.

Hope things work out for the best Nappy.

The mother of my oldest kid and I were never married. My kid has my last name and during the hospital stay had my last name on all of her ID's. The baby's wrist band, mother's wrist band, and my wrist band all had my last name on it.

Pretty sure the courts will pay for that if you can't afford it. Basically, the mother lists you as the father and the courts issue a paternity test. They understand not everyone can foot that bill. You should check into that.

Look at the bright side, you're gonna save tons of money not having to ever get divorced!

But in all seriousness...Do NOT let her name it Mark!

And lastly, I may be wrong or remembering things a little fuzzy, but I think the name choosing process in the hospital is pretty "lax". And you don't get the actual birth certificates until weeks later. So you just basically fill out a small form on the name, very casual. And the mom-to-be should be kinda "out of it" during the birthing process. So.....a couple hours after the baby is born, maybe you try to isolate the nurses a bit for the name process...and have your way with. The nurses won't be like "are you sure, did she say so, blah blah blah." They just dictate what the parent tells them.

Lol. No we've already named him Jeremiah Wilson. She agreed its going to take my last name only. Just like her last name is Sanchez and not Sanchez-Colon like on the birth certificate.
