Has been STELLAR since coming back from his one game suspension.

Not only is he humbled and healthy now, but I believe Mike Nolan allowing him to play more man-to-man and less zone has a lot to do with it. It's obvious as a physical corner that Davis thrives in a defense that lets him play his man straight up and it's shown the last 4 games. Not only is he taking away one side of the field, but he also has 2 interceptions, a handful of passes defended and notched his first career sack. He has been flying around the field and seems to always be around the ball.

It's also nice to see the defense as a whole playing like we knew they were capable of all season long. They have become the dominant group they were for most of last season. Kudos to Nolan, Sparano, and the players for getting it right and hopefully they can ride it through the rest of the season and beyond.

Last week on Sports Nation Colin Cowherd said we have the best cornerback tandem in the league now, passing the Jets. Props on getting the respect.

Too bad Cowherd is a clown who says outrageous stuff to get attention. He's like a less-stupid Skip Bayless.

It's a shame that Vontae gave up that touchdown right at the end because he hadn't given one up all season. It's a bigger shame that Sean Smith seems to be regressing though.

Smith is not regressing .... he is not progressing .... and hasn't made significant strides since he's been here.

Agreed Smith has not improved much. Just doesn't seem he can turn fast enough.

Vontae has been playing great football the last few weeks but he has much to make up for. He and a bunch of others were in lousy shape physically coming into this thing and it showed in his poor play early and missing so many games with his hamstring problem. I love the guy and he has talent galore so I hope he has learned to be a professional and grown up some.

Davis has responded well. The key will be can he sustain it. He has shown a tendency to be focused in short bursts and then losing focus. I've been disappointed with Smith. My main concern with him coming out was his personality and that hasn't changed.

I've seen Davis play quite a bit of coverage lately. His interception against Dallas, was a great read by him when he was playing Cover 2.

Um who is the other one? Smith? that is so laughable.....Vontae before the TD he gave up on Sunday hadnt giving up a TD all year, and QB's had a 60-something QB rating this year....

Smith has like a 101 QB rating....Smith has been a bust up to this point point blank...

I think they both tend be streaky due to immaturity. Last season Smith was clearly the better CB (lower rating against and fewer missed tackles). Right now, Davis is on a good streak. Hopefully, it turns into a long one, but who knows. There was a short streak last season where Davis performed better as well, but it obviously did not last all season.

Vontae giving up a TD in garbage time should not count against him.

Davis is playing solid for the most part. But he is not a shutdown corner at all IMO. SS is a joke. He embarrasses himself with his play as well as his antics. Keep pounding your chest on a routine play. Channing Crowder II.

The thing about Sean Smith that bugs me is that he doesn't make many impact plays. The interception he had against the Cowboys was the best play he's made in the NFL yet. And it was only his 2nd career INT and he's had PLENTY of chances. Also, Vontae Davis for the most part is a very good tackler, yet Smith tends to be very poor in that regard. Almost like he's afraid of contact.
With that said though, I still believe in SS because he's shown he has the ability to be a pain to opposing receivers.

I wish Davis would stop the showboating after every good play, just get back to the huddle and stop already. But his play has picked up!

Even though Sean Smith isn't the best tackler or the most physical he does have 42 solo tackles, which is 4th on the team.

I'd have to go back and watch previous touchdowns but I do think Vontae gave up the first touchdown to Laurent Robinson in the Dallas game...

And the word "bust" gets thrown around too much around here... it's ridiculous.

Nope, it was on Culver. They were in zone coverage and Culver didn't react fast enough when Robinson left Davis' zone.

Vontae's play doesn't give him the legitimacy to celebrate like he does. Same for SS.That's what pi**ed me off about Crowder. Screaming and pounding your chest after one routine play when you are being exposed throughout the game is a joke. Play solid for a while and actually make some impact plays or STFU.

I think we all have to take a step back and realize how hard it is to play cornerback in the NFL today. There's only one Darrelle Revis. VD is not Darrelle Revis. VD is still playing recently like he's a Top 5 corner. I have no qualms with him celebrating after breaking up a big pass on 3rd down or of course a more impactful play like a sack or turnover. These guys have the most scrutiny on them based on how the rules have changed (and how ref's are enforcing those rules today) and yet VD has played very well since returning from the injury.

I always thought of Smith being a free safety rather than a corner. However, at this point in his career it's probably too late to move him and have him learn how to play FS. As a corner, he often gets beat playing man-on-man, and looks lost playing zone. He's terrible at turning around, making plays on the ball, keeping up with his man. As a CB, he would be a nickle or dime on most teams. I think his skill set is best at free safety, where he rarely has to cover anyone, is free in space and can face the QB, and plays on the ball, without having to cover and then turn around. For some reason this regime(and perhaps Smith himself) has been insisting he's a CB. They had him at safety a few times last year but it was more of a demotion than an actual position change. He's very replaceable at the moment, IMO.

Davis on the other hand shows more effort at being a CB than Smith does and has better tools to do so. He does get beat often however but does make up for hit by making heavy hits and occasional big plays and interceptions. On most teams, he would be a great nickle and occasional starter. I'm not sold on him being a great or very good starting CB. He's slightly above average. But based on his play as of late, I'd look into giving him a another look next year, see if he continues to progress.

I highly disagree. Plus the showing of emotion helps pump the rest of the defense up. It is good for the team.

Pretty steep price, but I would likely do it. You avoid having to pay two big contracts as well since Cam and Vontae need to be resigned in the next year or two. You could then use that cap space to find another pass rusher and a weapon for Luck.

Watch the next time SS jumps up pounding his chest after an average play. Teammates aren't jumping around congratulating him because he isn't producing on even a semi regular basis and they know it. He's a wannabe. VD brings "a little" more cred because he makes a few more plays. The last person they want to be compared to is Crowder on the field. All hat no cattle.

Because I actually watched him his whole career. Disappear for an entire game and then make a tackle 10 yards down field and stand up shaking his head at the opposing bench like "you don't want none of this" Remember? He talked a good game and that's where it ended.
