    (If he remains GM)

    Reasons:
    • Ross will demand a 1st Round QB
    • Ireland is a Baylor alum and very familiar with the program and has likely scouted RGIII extensively, even while passively watching games as a fan
    • RGIII shares some similarities with Pat White and Colin Kapernick (one of which was drafted by Ireland's regime, and the other who was rumored to be a target) (Like these guys, RGIII is mobile and regarded as a highly intelligent, high character guy)
    • RGIII will likely be in the Dolphins draft range, although a trade up still might be needed.

Some other possible and maybe more relevant questions are

    1) How do RG3 fit into the scheme that the next HC wants to run?
    2) Will the Dolphins have a shot at acquiring another QB they evaluate at a higher grade come draft time, whether it that takes trading away future picks, player, etc?
    3) Can RG3 run a pro style offense ( west coast? ) if not can he take the beating of the NFL or will he be out every 3rd game like Vick when he attempts to run?

I would rather have Barkley, Ireland should have been axed also.

If you axed Ireland, I think he might lean toward RG3, but Barkley's probably close in his estimation. :shifty:

If Jeff Ireland has his say, which is a big IF at this point because of the whole Peterson rumor, then I think Matt Barkley is his guy.

I can see coaches steering toward a guy based on alumni status. I can even see Jerry Jones who is officially the GM of the Cowboys doing that. But I don't see real personnel evaluators doing that.

We will give up the draft picks (to the Colts) to get Andrew Luck before we draft RG3.

cause the New coach might want that skillset to develope his team, and that there is almost 40 to 50 percent of the roster that has the potential to be turned over.

... Let Spags serve witness that the new coach might not be there in 3 years neither.

Here's a conversation for you guys. Place the participants where you may.

    "Is he the one?"

    "Yes."

"Do whatever it takes to get him."

All of the talk about Dan Marino in his final 4 years grooming his replacement- I'm not buying it. I'm also not buying into Jimmy Johnson is interested in drafting anyone other than a player that helps him win now. The Dolphins are 0-13 for crying out loud!

Totally. Any GM who drafts a player because he is an alumni of the same school as one of his primary reasons, should never work in the NFL again. No matter how much anyone else here may dislike Ireland, he is a whole lot smarter than that.

Exactly. I'm not a fan of Jeff Ireland but I don't see him leaning toward a player based on alumni status. Like I said, I think sometimes coaches could fall into that, and maybe even a Jerry Jones (although I don't think he's got that many Arkansas players, does he?)...but not a professional personnel evaluator that started from a scout and worked his way up and made his bones on being RIGHT about players.

Between Luck, Griffin3, Barkley and /Weeden, we certainly should be in a position to draft ONE of them, even if we have to trade up, though I do not see us needing to as there's no way we win any more games this season. Don't know enough about Tannehill to include/exclude hi from this list.

Griffin is interesting. whether we like it or not, a fair amount of team success comes from the QB pulling plays out of their ***.

the play on Sunday where Randy Starks busts through the protection and Vick escapes and lofts it 30 yards is a perfect example. Every Dolphins QB we have had in the past decade would have been sacked or just laid down.

Ireland supposedly likes Barkely, but I'm curious what he thinks of Griffin.

This is an incredibly important point. The fact is that NFL defenses are pretty good at stopping you when they know what's coming. So the offenses that succeed either have so many weapons that you can't stop them all or QBs that can do the unexpected. That's why the "ability to extend the play" has become such an important skill for your QB to have. That doesn't mean just the ability to run around. There are many ways to do that. You could be able to shrug off tacklers like Big Ben or Tebow, throw that incredibly accurate pass while falling back like Brady or all of the above like Rodgers. The true franchise QBs have that ability along with other elite skills. But if they lack that ability to extend the play they will probably top out at being one of those guys that is never quite good enough unless they happen upon the perfect supporting cast. When I consider potential first round guys, they better have that ability (along with some other elite skills) or they won't make my list.

i have to admit that I am not crazy about this new reality, but only the fool ignores it. im not sure if this means the game is getting better or worse. it is interesting considering that the rules favor the offense

in this era of the NFL it seems like if you dont have the elite talent at QB, you can still be competitive with a guy that is hard to bring down.

i have been very resistant to this, but im now much more open to getting a Griffin

the comparisons of Barkley are to Drew Brees, but what are the chances he can be like that or that a lesser version of Brees can really be successful? on the other hand, a guy like Griffin may not be able to hit 10 passes in a row, but he may be able to make the crucial unscripted plays that a Barkley cant make

idk, that play against the Eagles really has me fed up. i dont want to say that we should strictly be drafting by "type," but its getting close for me

I agree with you. That's true and it's the reason ultimately I would draft a Robert Griffin...because a man that can pull a play out of his *** like the one he pulled to end the Oklahoma game...if you can do that at the NFL then you may have something.

But those plays come once in a while and you need a guy that's going to do the little things right the other 90% of the time, so that you can get to those big plays. I'm just not sure yet Griffin can do that.

It's good to note, however, that Miami did intercept Mike Vick, generally did a good job on defense, but was let down by turnovers and bad coaching calls. The defense frustrates Vick on 3 straight drives and then Tony Sparano decides to kick an impossibly long field goal, giving Vick the ball on the 45 yard line, and they go for the touchdown. Then Matt Moore throws an interception which is returned to our own 1 yard line and they get another touchdown. Then we fumble it, giving the ball to Philly on our own side of the field, already in FG range, and they kick the FG.

Really Philadelphia only had one long scoring drive in the game. The rest of the time they were punting, or we were intercepting Vick, or we gave them a short field. The offense handed them 10 points at the least, with the defense not being able to do anything about that. Even if you don't count the field goal decision by Sparano which gave them the ball at the 45 yard line...a 16 point defensive outing against LeSean McCoy, Mike Vick, Jeremy Maclin, DeSean Jackson and Brent Celek? I'll take that.

I generally agree with you that being able to make incredible plays is becoming important...but the Eagles didn't win because of that I don't think.

im not off Barkley by any means, but I am coming around to Griffin much more. A big thing for me was watching an interview of him on one of the pregame shows. he just seems like a real quality guy and one that will put in the work needed to round off his game. he has courage in the pocket, good arm that seems pretty accurate to me. i dont know how he is reading defenses. i am very much interested in learning more about him

I'm not saying that all you need is the big play guy. In fact, I specifically said that you need your QB to have other elite skills as well. I would say that at a minimum, as long as your QB avoids the big mistakes, he won't lose it for you. If in addition to that he can pull a few plays out of his *** then you're going to win more than your share. That's why a guy like Tebow is finding success. He rarely makes the big mistake. Without looking it up, I would guess that his TD/INT ratio is among the best in the league. And while he obviously leaves some plays on the field he also makes a ton of plays. All the talking heads and the people who haven't realized how the game has developed act like it's a great mystery and that it isn't sustainable, but I don't see it as a mystery at all. I'm not saying Tebow is a franchise guy at this point. IMO he has to develop more of an ability to make plays from the pocket. But the point is that making enough plays relative to how many mistakes you make is what separates the great QBs from the others. And in the NFL that generally means that you have to be able to make some of those plays when things don't go right. Or in other words, pull plays out of your ***.

As for Barkley he's still my top choice after Luck. He isn't a speedster or big, but he has great pocket sense and runs smart. He can also throw very accurately on the run to either side (that's actually pretty rare). I definitely see him as a guy that can extend the play. If he turns into Brees then I'm all in. I actually have Brees as the second best QB in the league behind Rodgers right now.

He accidentally led the nation in passing and accidentally is able to hit receivers with pinpoint accuracy on the deep ball. It will take time so that those skills don't happen accidentally.

exactly. and if I go pull out quotes from months ago, this is exactly my beef with Chad Worthless Henne. A complete lack of playmaking ability.

I am very glad Ross is putting the heater on this organization to focus on the QB spot.

I like that he's a quality person, witty and well spoke.

But it's not a big deal for me.

When I say the reason I'd ultimately draft Robert Griffin what I mean is, I don't draft a guy I don't like. If I say I'll draft you in the 3rd round, then I must like you. I mean, I had T.J. Yates as a 2nd or 3rd round pick and I couldn't shut up about the man, still can't. So if I struck out on my QBs of interest in the 1st round I would take a hard look at Robert Griffin in the 2nd or 3rd...because I like him. But I don't like him as "the" guy. Way too many kinks in his game to iron out, IMO. And we're not just talking about minor mechanical kinks. We're talking about major flaws in areas that are hard to improve a great deal.

A guy like Tebow is finding success right now because he doesn't lose the game and because his defense is STELLAR. Yes, they beat the Vikings even though the Vikings ran up points on the Broncos defense. But the Vikings defense itself is one of the very worst in the league. If that defense can't hold a team under 20-25 points, I think that team is dead in the water unless they're facing a bad defense.

It's a young team, particularly at the receiver position. In that Chicago game, Tebow was pretty consistent for all four quarters. You could count the bad passes on one hand. It was the receivers that were playing poorly. Once they stepped it up, the offense scored. That offense has actually been able to score quickly when it needed to more often than not. They tend to play it conservative most of the time, but have shown the ability to open it up in crunch time. I wouldn't be so quick to discount their ability to win against a team that scores 20 - 25 pts. I mean again of course, since they already did it against the Raiders and the Vikings. But those wins are always discounted. The defense was bad or they weren't ready for that offense.
