Steve Ross being linked with a story that involves the Dolphins Management team buying Everton FC of the English Premier League?

Can any of you guys confirm the whispers doing the rounds and maybe put some meat on the bones?

Merry Christmas to you all by the way from a damp & dreary UK!

    Cheers,

    MD

Boomer (Simon Clancy) covers the Premiere League so perhaps he will have some information on this for you.

Well, even as a Liverpool fan, that would be cool. Everton certainly are in the market to be bought :wink2:

Hopefully Ross will have more of an interest in Soccer and he will decide to sell the Dolphins to an owner who actually knows how to run a sports organization.

Even if we assume this info to be true, how exactly does it show his priorities aren't straight?

How long as Ross owned the Fins? 1 year? But we are a "perpetually mediocre" team under him?

didn't say that they became perpetually mediocre under him. They were perpetually mediocre when he got here.

Thus..he is now going to own TWO perpetually mediocre teams.

Doesn't seem to be a problem for Paul Allen (Seahawks/Blazers). Though it is a major problem for the Glazer family (Bucs/Man U).

Another way to look at it: Bill Davidson owned the Detroit Pistons, Tampa Bay Lightning and Detroit Shock simultaneously. The Shock won WNBA titles in '03 and '06, while the Pistons (NBA) and Lightning (NHL) both won titles in 2004.

    It can be done.

MR Ross buying a minor league team is similar to the Marlins buying a farm team .

anyways i would not get excited about this move because there probally isnt a Dan Marino , Zach Thomas or Keith Byars on that team .

    bad investment :tongue2:

as opposed to Everton which IMO is a good investment. Really low payroll (compared to a Man U), great fans, great atmosphere (as opposed to.. :shifty:). If I were advising Mr. Ross, I'd obviously want to know all the details (er, how much is he paying) prior to signing off, but on the surface it seems like a good move.

 I'm laughing and I'm not entirely sure that was a joke or not. Everton is soccer... "soccer" to us Americans... "football" to those across the pond... Pond = Atlantic Ocean...

The fact is that Ross purchased 50% of the Dolphins in February 2008. He purchased the majority ownership of the Dolphins in January 2009. This means that he has been a significant owner of the Dolphins for nearly four years, not the one year you implied. During the period he has been a major owner of the Dolphins, they have a record of 30-33. This is about as mediocre as you can get.

This. the PL is a different animal - no salary cap. The Glazers can definitely tell you how much harder it is to stay competitive AND turn a profit in the PL. Everton is one of the best at the "moneyball" philosophy - getting the most out of the least.

    Everton isn't minor league. ;)

If I'm an Everton fan, I don't know if this is good or bad. Obviously the guy wants to win, but based on his moves and actions during ownership of the Dolphins, I don't know if it would get any easier as an owner over there. Glad to hear the reports are false, if for nothing else Mr. Ross can concentrate on this investment.

Edit: In unrelated but related news, you guys know Landon Donovan is going to Everton on a quick 2-month loan right? Should make watching those games a little more interesting...

This. I can only imagine the response if, say, Ross had donated $10 million to leukemia research.

Poster A: "Leukemia? Ross hates cancer victims!"
Poster B: "Great, now that's $10 million less to spend on free agents. Ross can't run a football team!"
Poster C: "I'd rather have Jeffrey Loria running this team. He's doesn't waste money like Ross."
Poster D: "So which D-list celebrity will Ross sell part ownership to now? He'll want to make his money back somehow."

    And on and on.

The criticism of Ross is warranted based on his past moves.

That reaction would be like getting upset for thinking an ex-con might burgle your house.

Wait... I just noticed you're a Sounders fan... Don't even look at me. The shame of it!

Actually, I had to go find a Timbers logo for my sig when I saw that. I'm a johnny come lately to the whole soccer thing. Never saw a game that entertained me untill I caught some Timbers games this year. Something about a home town team I guess.
