Why isn't Russel Wilson being talked about more as a future draft choice. The guy is a GREAT athlete, has a great arm, and is very smart.
In a nutshell this is the answer. Additionally, he is not overly athletic enough like Mike Vick in order to move around and outside of the pocket in order to see down field.
I like his game, have watched him for yrs now. Thing with him is, when he releases the ball, you cannot see how he is seeing over his OL and yet the ball lands on the receiver well enough. Personally, I feel if David Garrard can have success in the NFL there is no reason why Wilson cannot have success they remind me of each other in terms of stature and build, both kind of blocky, shorter guys.
? Garrard has to be 4 inches taller. If Wilson was Garrards size he would be a very good prospect. I'd bet RW is 5'10 though.
For what its worth, he got an invite for the Senior Bowl, so maybe if he impresses coaches he'll get a camp invite.
Garrard's listed at 6'1 There is absolutely -0- chance they draft Wilson, he is not a "prototype" or "planet theory" or "big man's game" player.
IDK bro, he looks shorter then 6'1 to me, could be he is so stocky, but he looks like Michael Turner.
Yes, he has. His career QB rating is 85.8, and he's had two seasons of 90.8 and 102.2 QB ratings. That's successful .
His height is the reason he's not given higher draft status. However, during a Wisconsin game earlier this year they did a graphic where the Wisconsin OL was actually taller and bigger than the Packers OL. Just saying. Could he be another Doug Flutie? Since doubling up on a draft position sometimes works out, perhaps it would be worth using a 5th or 6th for him; this will be the likely rounds that he will be drafted in as it looks right now.
You can list all the stats you want. Fact remains David Garrard shouldn't be the measuring stick for successful when it comes to QBs.
The career rating isn't very good and while he has had one really good season, he's been inconsistent and unable to get his team to any sort of stability. I'm not going to get in the habit of referring to one really good season as real success.
He's been alright, not great, not bad, he's normally topped my 60% completion/1.5 to 1 td to int ratio yardstick of a passable starting NFL Qb. Career winning record as a starter, he just says "Jacksonville" not bad, not great, just a good player. Thing about him is I've never seen another 6'1/244 pd Qb in the NFL.
No. I saw him play against Ohio St. this year and he was not impressive at all. He was clearly undersized and overwhelmed.
It's really not all that terrible a comparison. When looking at college production (both as seniors and cumulative) they compare favorably.
Thats nice, so do a lot of players. They are not similar in the way they play however, Russell Wilson relies on moving around and letting his recievers get open and if not he checks down. He can stand in the pocket against inferior defenses, he can not against above average ones.
I like the kids game man, and before Matt moores emergence here, I had us doubling up on the position in this years draft, and Wilson being that 2nd guy.
Russell Wilson vs. OSU 20 comp 32 attempts 62.5 completion percentage 253 yards 3 TD's 0 ints 159.8 QB Rating I'm not saying we should use our first round on him, or even the second round. But if we can't get RGIII, Luck, or Barkley, I wouldn't even think twice about using a middle rounder on him. I want him over both Landry Jones and Weeden.
You clearly said he has never had success in the NFL. Meaning he has had never had a good, successful season in the NFL. That's wrong. He's had some successful seasons in the NFL.
I'd take Wilson in the 5th round or so in a heartbeat. Yea he's short, but the kid can ball, and is certainly worth taking a flyer on with a 5th round pick.
I would say that his year at Wisconsin did nothing but help his case. I don't really know what will happen with his baseball career, or how that will affect football. I have some feelers out about that with some people in the know with the Rockies.
For the size factor it certainly does not help that he is only 5"11 But its not like it hasn't been done before (Drew Brees is currently a top QB same height). Say what you want about Wilson but him transferring to a school and picking up a brand new offense and only playing 1 year he did amazing. Also the last QB to win at NC State hasn't had a bad NFL Career either (Phillip Rivers who also had much better talent around him). Its insulting to think he shouldn't be drafted. I think he belongs somewhere in the 4th rd maybe even the late 3rd.
Wow, this certainly shows how bad things are in Dolphin land when the desire of some fans is that the team should should draft the next David Garrard. Personally I was hoping more for the next Aaron Rodgers, or Peyton Manning. Drafting a player in the category of Garrard would only ensure that the Dolphins remain a mediocre team for years to come. In fact, while I am not a big Matt Moore fan, I think he is a better NFL QB right now then Garrard ever was.
doubling up on QBs doesn't always work out either. The Panthers drafted Clausen and Pike two years ago and both were awful. Russell Wilson is about as much of a NFL QB as Seneca Wallace. Great athlete, career backup.
