We don't announce draft picks. Ireland probably wouldn't leave the building until Monday at 3 AM or so.

Really? I thought I saw him up there one yr doing exactly that?

    Eh, could be wrong.

The problem is Des, we stay at 8th, we miss out on the Blue Chip skill guys in this draft, Ireland did pick DWare, and that is to his credit, so hopefully..

I agree with this. My take on Ryan Cook is the further inside he plays the better he is. An o-line with Mathis at LG, Cook at C, and Pouncey at RG would be much better than what we had this season inside. Is Cook a pending UFA too though? Mathis should be a Dolphin anyway. He is Baumhower's nephew. Another reason to question our FO, but this smacks of a Parcells decision though because Mathis is a move player, not an inline powerful mauler type. Then again, Smiley was considered a very mobile guard and Mathis is sort of a poor man's Smiley, when the latter was 100% healthy.
The fact our coaches and FO didn't see any potential in Mathis and let him go, is a major mud in the face move. Mathis played well in Cincy and also in Philly since he left. Part of our OL problems has been expensive key players falling apart physically, and part of it was having some good talent and not recognizing it as such and keeping it.
Mathis allowed no sacks as a starter in Cincy in '09, none in 2010, and none so far in Philly in 2010. This is a guy who our former head coach, an OL guru, and his veteran OL coach at the time, Mike Maser, didn't think was worth keeping, rather than stalwarts such as Andy Alleman and Ike Ndukwe.

I guess that mostly they'll go where the most guaranteed money is offered, but I couldn't blame Mathis if he said F You Miami, you had me once and dumped me.

Matt Kalil, Ryan is his brother, the C for the Panthers, and it's a moot point anyway. We'd have to trade up to get Matt Kalil.

I'd doubt we'd sign him, or he'd sign here, Ireland was in the front office when he was waived back then as well.

Which bring up another unpleasantness, Sparano and Pracells are gone...Ireland is still a proponent of the exact type of "mauling blocker" you referenced..demonstrably has failed, yet, the ideal lives in our GM.

Not seeing it Mr C, look at the teams likely to pick ahead of us, most of them have taken their LT with a high pick recently, from St Louis to Jacksonville, there is only one team extra special dummy enough, besides us, to use high picks on both tackles

The Rams, they are also the only team who has given up more sacks then us...

Well if there's no 1st round QB prospect then you have to hope Weeden is available in the 2nd. If not, I still am pretty high on going all in on Matt Flynn. GB seems to have better luck than us developing young QBs and he won't cost us a draft pick.

That argument is going to be true for any pick at any position yet you keep harping on it.
Should we trade away all draft picks for a team of vets only every year?

Moore can continue to be developed to see what his upside is and a young QB can be drafted and developed as well.
That would be the smartest route for this team. It's not a one or the other scenario at all.

I'm not saying we draft a QB high just to do it but if a prospect is there we believe has a high ceiling this team would be idiotic to pass on him.

If the top 2 QBs are out of the picture, I'd probably attempt to trade back for an extra 2nd or future 1st.

Without an elite FS or OLB ala Von Miller or Boik's boy, Aldon Smith, there's little reason to need a top 10 pick since our core positional needs are already met (LT, #1 WR, #1 CB, C, and I'd go as far as adding 5 technique 34 DE to that list).

In the latter half of the 1st round, there should be a few studs available at positions of need:
    - QB (Tannehill)
    - OLB with pass rushing ability (Sam Montgomery, Brandon Jenkins, Bruce Irvin, Melvin Ingram, Andre Branch)
    - SS (Mark Barron)
    - NT (Dontari Poe, in case Soliai can't be re-signed, but I think he'll want to stay in Miami)
    - playmaking #2 WR (Kendall Wright)
    - CB (especially if he can be converted to FS. perhaps Alfonzo Denard)
    -RT (Andrew Datko).

*IMO we dont need to get too cute by looking for the "cure all" answer with our 1st pick (if the top 2 QBs are off the board); we just need to add players who make us better.

I could see the Rams at #2 or 3, take him , move Saffold to RT, and jettison the bust known as Jason Smith. Unless they like seeing Bradford get pummeled senseless by the pass rush. The Rams out of necessity have moved Harvey Dahl, a pure guard, to RT the last few games and he has done better than Jason Smith ever did. Kalil would be a major upgrade over either Smith or Saffold though, and measurably increase the life expectancy of Bradford.

Ireland has a mini press conference at the end of each draft day. You may be thinking of that.

Actually Pads, the Vikings need Kalil even more than the Rams. Charlie Johnson is a marginal pro LT at best. Only 3 LTs in the league have pass blocked worse than Johnson this season. J'Marcus Webb, Marshall Newhouse, and Levi Brown.

    Rams-Kalil
    Vikings-Claiborne
    Jags-Blackmon
    Browns-RG3
    Bucs-Richardson
    Redskins-Jonathan Martin
    Dolphins-Coples or Riley Reiff

I really think 1 and 2 are already set I doubt Rams take Blackmon or Claiborne. So the Vikings are left with 2 possibilities. Take next best oline which is Martin IMO or get a stud CB in Caliborne. I firmly believe Browns are going RG3. McCoy is not the guy in Cleveland. Bucs desperately need Corner help but I doubt they take Kirkpatrick at 6. Washington is the biggest wildcard because I can see Dan Snyder go all in to get Andrew Luck and the Colts could get Martin or Reiff. Which leaves Miami with Coples. I would love to get Martin but I don't think he will be there at 8.

you need to get elite talent at a skill pos with a top 7 pick I'm not sure we need a rb but if both qbs and blackmon are gone I'm not so sure if I wouldn't draft Richardson there

In theory though, every Qb has a high ceiling, to me the real question is would/should we give up picks to move up for a RG3?

I'd like to see us aggressively move up for a Blackmon tbh as there is no way to effectively cover for not having playmakers catching the ball, and not to "make Matt Moore better!", but to to make the entire offense primed to be explosive in the first place.

Would also like to see Steve Slaton brought back as Reggie Bush insurance and with a legit shot to return kickoffs and punts, to me that is another avenue for upping our explosiveness, Bess off of Punts, 1 Returner, and Bush insurance Slaton makes some sense for us.

We don't really know that for sure. In his one draft where we know he had final say, he took an athletic mobile lineman.

As I said before, that is no certainty. First of all we still don't know where the Rams will pick until the final week's games are played. I'd say there is a fair bet they are very disappointed in Smith. Even if they don't take him, the Vikings definitely need him even more than the Rams.

That comparison doesn't make any sense. How many other positions do we have a very young, promising starter in a position where where only one player of that type starts and of similar importance with a year left under contract?

It's absolutely a one or the other scenario. There are no circumstances where you are not significantly wasting resources. You will not get back what you invest under virtually any scenario.

If the Dolphins can't make a trade up to get Luck or RG3 in the first round, I want them to draft Trent Richardson. I think that Daniel Thomas will turn out to be a bust for the Dolphins in the long run. He had two decent games earlier this season and did nothing else the remainder of the season. He also seems to constantly be out injured. I see him as another bad second round selection by Ireland. What makes it worse is that the Dolphins had to trade their third round pick in the draft to move up to take Thomas.

While Reggie Bush has played really well this season. Whether he can remain the main back on this team going forward is still a major question, as far as I am concerned. This is why I feel that Richardson would be the best choice if Luck or RG3 are not available when the Dolphins select in the first round. He is a excellent running back who would be a perfect complement in the backfield to alternate with Bush next season.

Perhaps the Dolphins could trade Thomas for a sixth or seventh round pick, because that is all he was worth in the first place.

There's no way in hell we're taking a RB with a top 10 pick. RB is not even a need on our team. This team has so many holes that picking a rb would be a luxury pick.

And now the reason for shopping the pick is there, especially if they can move back but not to far back.

Say we wind up 7th overall, they can trade with us for say Vontae, then select Fitzpatrick (Cb out of Alabama) if Claiborne is off the board.

They will have solved their Cb issues.

So Was Ryan Mathews a bust last year when he struggled with the same speed of the game issues and injury issues? What about Darren McFadden in the years prior? Thomas Jones years ago? Rashard Mendenhall in his rookie season barely played so was he a bust? What about CJ Spiller? Reggie Bush? Come on dude.

And then you want to draft Richardson as a compliment to Bush? As a top 10 selection? A top 10 pick better be starting. Thats insanity.

A top 10 running back is insanity period. Adrian Peterson is barely worth the 7th round pick; now we're going to say Trent Richardson is good enough to be drafted in the same range? Heck no. That's nonsense stacked atop the "let's get supplant Daniel Thomas" nonsense stacked atop the "address a position other than QB" nonsense.

how in the world is Adrian Peterson barely worth the 7th pick in the draft hes worth the 1st pick by a landslide if your going based off what hes done now if your saying prospect wise he was still all world coming out of college he only dropped in the draft because of his injury history.

It says that 3 of those 5 just drafted QB's last year. One of those, Bradford has been injured half the year which is why the Rams went from 7 wins to two which says a lot more about why we should go for Luck than why we shouldn't.

Uhm, you do realize we have the 2nd worst pass blocking OL in the NFL?

    Oh,we can draft some...wait a minute...

And therein is the problem B14, you are trying to plug a hole on one side of the ship, while kicking a new hole in the other side of it.

Um we have a stud LT and a stud C. The two biggest holes on the OL are filled even if Jake has an injury. The problem is we have phone booth guards, a turnstyle RT, a coaching staff too dumb to put Jerry at RT instead of Columbo, QB's that hold the ball for a week and play from behind too often placing us in obvious pass rushing situation which only leads to more sacks.

But wait it gets better. You complained in one thread that we lost 5 games by 10 points. Well where do those points come from? Linemen? WR's who have Matt freakin Moore throwing the ball? I know you think David Garrard solves the problem but youre wrong. Thats no better then Matt Moore

We should be able to find a RT and G in the later rounds or free agency. You don't spend 3 first round picks on the OL in 4 years.

Hell, we may already have them on the team in Jerry and Garner, but our former coach was too foolish to use them, staking his reputation on Cowboy rejects.

The Patriots, Packers, Steelers - they just keep plugging in linemen and getting results. They aren't afraid to take a high pick OL some years, but they definitely do not need to throw first rounders at it like linemen are going out of style.
