The injuries are mounting and I hope his better days aren't behind him. I am sick of trying unsuccesssfully to rebuild this line and last thing we need is to lose jake.
Do hate that this turned out to be a serious injury. But also think Big Jake should have been shut down last week, either way the Big Fella will have plenty of time off to rehab his knee/back/biceps and lord knows what else is wrong with him.
I had the same injury about the time Offerdahl had it, and went to Herb Virgin, the team doctor at the time, because of his experience. The doc explained to me that it's usually not really the biceps that's torn; it's one of the ligaments connecting it to the bone. Jake will have surgery to reattach it, rehab in the offseason and be fine. Offerdahl came back fine.
The ironic thing about this is Parcells took Jake because he was sure he would have a long, durable career, last 2 yrs: 2010: -torn MCL -torn labrum 2011: -knee issue this yr -back -biceps That is not an accusation simply pointing out that this is a violent gm with unpredictable outcomes, there are no guarantees that even the toughest guys won't be injured.
Long's exactly the kind of guy you want on the line, if we had more guys like him we'd be winning a lot more games. Hope he heals and has a healthy season next year. Probably should have shut him down earlier, its much more important to have him ready for camp next year than to play in a few games where we have no shot at the playoffs.
Just goes to show the luck of the draw. Anthony Munoz only played 16 total games at USC because of 2 or 3 knee operations. He suffered multiple injuries throughout his career with the Bengals (only missing 3 games total) and is widely considered the best lineman to have ever played. I think Jake will be fine with a proper offseason of rehabilitation this year.
I place it firmly on the coaches. This guy should have been shut down earlier both years, but he pushes to play and the team lets him. For example he had no business being out there against Chicago.
Why is Mortensen the one breaking this news? It's pretty freaky if Mort has more or higher-placed sources in the Dolphins than the beat writers.
Wouldnt have happened had we shut him down after the back injury last week. One year away from being a free agent remember.

It all goes back to pre season 2010 Sparano had no brain leaving Jake in a meaningless Dallas pre season game. Result, knee injury that bothered him all season. Compensating for the knee injury that never healed properly, Jake tweaked his shoulder then tore his labrum. Right then and there they should have le thim have surgery but no, they kept grinding on him and throwing him out there with the excuse ' Jake is a warrior, I tried taking him out of the game and I will never do that again " Which meant Jake read Tony the riot act when they took him out. Too bad Jake, thats why coaches are supposed to wear the big boy pants and do what is right for a team. Jake has shoulder surgery in the off season and a clean up on his knee. Lockout comes and Jake had to rehab off premises, not that on the premises would have been better. Right before lockout ends, jake needs his knee cleaned up again due to scar tissue from not rehabbing it correctly. Misses entire preseason and does not have full contact until actual first game. Nursed sore knee first part of the season and played like crap. From compensating from the knee soreness and not hitting all summer and actually still recovering from the shoulder surgery, over compensation created a back problem. Let him sit a week and from all of the above, tweaked what was thought to be his elbow. Only to find out torn biceps, probably the end that attaches to elbow because that is where they had the ice and that is where it was evident it was a huge lump. The kid was ground into the ground by a coach and given that blessing by the teams GM and now he will need surgery, again and have at least a 4 to 5month rehab on this surgery. Its insane, the kid should have been shut down long ago regardless of how he felt about being sat.
Shutting Jake down was hardly a concern for a coach already relying completely on his players to protect HIS future career. As an assistant HC, Bowles likely had full knowledge of Jakes condition, but with his focus centered more intimately on the secondary, he might have been relying on Gug to point it out, not to mention the fact replacing Jake, ran contrary to the bottomline of how beating the Pats would look on his resume.
this is why i dont want do draft anymore olinemen in rd for a while . detroit and dallas are stockpiling talent while we keep screwing around with the oline. just get some better olinemen in th elater rounds and lets go get a Calvin Johnson or get a A.J.Green type of wr .
Big jake will be fine, although I think he whould have been shut down when it was obvious his knee was still bothering him.
Jake Long, Joe Thomas, and Ferguson are the best LTs in the game in that order, but I still think the Dolphins would have benefited more taking Matt Ryan.
Hopefully Long will be able to overcome these injuries and return to his former all pro playing level. Unfortunately his multiple injuries reminds me a great deal of the injuries to another dominant NFL tackle who had his NFL career cut short, Tony Boselli. Boselli was an outstanding offensive tackle for the Jacksonville Jags and the second overall pick in 1995 draft. Multiple injuries he suffered in his early years in the league eventually caused him to retire from the game in 2002. We can only hope that Long will not suffer the same fate which ended Boselli's career in his prime.
Just because you dot take a LT #1 overall doesn't mean you won't have someone that is effective. Regardless, even with Long the team has given up a record number of sacks. A great QB can work around and mitigate an average/subpar offense. A great LT doesn't really make the QB a better thrower nor does he guarantee that the offensive line will open massive holes and make average RBs look like heroes.
That's not what I was getting at. I;m just saying Matt Ryan would have got killed here. Could you imagine what would happen if he played behind our O-line?
If we drafted a decent 2nd round LT there's no guarantee that Matt Ryan would be crushed on every play. He isn't Michael Vick or Aaron Rodgers but he moves well enough to avoid the pressure. Matt Moore is effective behind this crappy OL. I'm sure Ryan would do even better.
Do what the Falcons did, and trade up into the lower first round and draft Sam Baker, who is basically one of the worst left tackles in the league, but somehow Ryan gets by most of the time, even with Baker covering his blind side. Baker has been replaced the last half of the 2011 season by Will Svitek and relegated to a backup role. Back then people used to debate which was the better combo, Ryan and Baker, or Long and Henne. Granted, an offense is 9 other players too, but I'd guess most people would rather have Ryan and Baker now, looking back. Of course a lot of wanna be GMs will tell you they knew all along that was how it would turn out.
