I'm assuming Finley is the priority for GB? If they strike a deal with Finley they can tag Flynn. If Flynn works with the Packers they can swing a deal thats good for the franchise and Flynn. There is too much of a premium for QB's to let him walk for nothing.

I thought League rules stated you can't tag someone with the purpose of trading them. Could be wrong on that tho.

They do, but it happens and the league ignores the rule.

The problem with the rule if I understand correctly is the player must file greviance. I do not think that Flynn is going to be upset with 14.1 million dollars.

That's still a dangerous game for Green Bay to play. If they tag Flynn and nobody bites, the backup QB will be the highest paid player on the team.

Correct and that's assuming they already reached a deal with Finley or that adds another layer of risk. Obviously GB would prefer to tag Flynn and then trade him, but it is far from a forgone conclusion that it will happen.

I'd like to know what their cap situation is. I wonder if they can even take that risk based on cap space.

No risk when all parties are colluding. Flynn knows he'll get paid and as far as everyone can tell GB has done well by him. I would expect him to work with GB and a team to give GB compensation.

What does he has to gain from colluding with the Packers?

Its more about re-paying the team that has helped get you to this point and knowing if it doesn't pan out you get a big payday anyhow. GB has to believe that someone will pay a price for him. I have no doubt someone will belly up for Flynn and give GB compensation.

He doesn't gain anything by re-paying the team that has helped him.

I think it is more along the line as, "Why not, at least I get 14.1 million dollars."

I love how Matt Flynn is suddenly a hot commodity. Yup, lets just keep repeating the cycle. Let me guess. 2nd round pick for him? Two things Im convinced of. This franchise will never bite the bullet and draft a qb high, nor will they ever get with the times and get an athletic TE.

he would be a hot commodity last year. Plus it worked out on Hasselbeck and Matt Schaub.

If I had a choice between, lets say:

26yr old Matt Flynn, Tom Clements as OC, and keep our first rounder to give Flynn another weapon

    or

29yr old Weeden, ??? as OC and no high pick (assuming a trade down)

I'd take the Flynn deal. Unless RG3 miraculously falls to us or we trade up, both unlikely IMO, I think Flynn may be our best option. Barring a meteoric rise by a third QB up the draft boards that is actually warranted and not all hype of course.

i think a 2nd rounder to find out if he is what you think he is might be steep. in terms of the other two, neither can seem to stay healthy

He is a free agent, so unless he is franchised he will cost nothing but a contract.

I've been on the sign Matt Flynn bandwagon since we crapped the bed in the Luck Sweepstakes. I think he's our best option this offseason, unless we mortgage the future to trade up and get Luck.

I'd be cool with taking one of the top WR's with our 1st pick, the Stanford TE with our 2nd pick, sign Matt Flynn pair them with Marshall, Hartline, Bess, Bush and let's roll ... oh and pick up a decent O-linemen in FA.

It's not just about him though. Finley will be looking for his big contract. If that deal isn't worked out beforehand then you risk losing Finley if you don't tag him. Odds are that Finley will want to max out what he can get. The best way to do that is by testing the FA market. GB will either have the tag at that point or not. If they use it on Flynn so they can trade him then they won't have it for Finley. So no matter how much Flynn may want to help out GB, it's really more dependent on what Finley does.

Understood. But Finleys agent has an idea what market will bear, short of an Snyder type offer. Even with that type of offer do you really want to play for that type of team? Maybe I'm wrong but players actually seem to like the GB organization and playing there so if the money is at market they'll bite. If GB swings the Finley deal they hold the cards on Flynn. Tagged or not someone is going after him and I don;t see how GB doesn't make a deal with Finley and tag Flynn.

In theory everybody knows what the market will bear and yet every year you see most untagged players deicide to test the FA market. The fact is that if GB uses it's tag on Flynn then the odds greatly favor Finley testing the FA market. He may still come back to GB, but tagging Flynn almost assuredly exposes GB to the risk of losing Finley.
