I have a weird feeling that Jeff Fisher is not the right coach for the Miami Dolphins. I have sense it is going to be someone is not a big name, not looking for a lot of money, and is not what was expected of the Dolphins to hire. Like I said I am probably wrong but I have a feeling Fisher is not going to take us where we want to go no matter what he has done in the past. This is just my take on this head coaching deal.
I have a feeling if we don't get quality play from the QB position it won't matter who the coach is. Also if we do get quality play from the QB position, there are probably a half dozen coaches out there we could hire and win with, and Fisher would be one of them. Once you have that, getting an actual Super Bowl tends to come down to a mixture of luck and timing.
I completely agree. Right now he's the prettiest girl at the prom...because he's the only one at the prom. No other big names out there. And his name, in my opinion, is much bigger than it should be. His resume doesn't impress me.
I have to agree. Obviously we need to find a good coach, but until we get a real Qb it won't matter who's pulling the strings. Matt Moore did a great job for us this past year, way above everyone's expectations and I'd be happy to have him go into the season as the starter -- as long as we have drafted a bonafide Qb prospect to groom behind him. In this league with the rule changes that have been put in place over the last 5 years or so having a great Qb is an absoulute must. Look at the numbers from this year, 3 different QB's over 5,000 yards and I don't remember how many threw 40+ Td passes. It is so much in favor of passing offense these days that Rb's are nearly passe'.
Which make last years debacle with Jim Harbaugh that much worse. Had ROSS just done what he needed to last year we could be in the Playoffs this year.. He turned San Fran around in one off season and got production and good schemes out of the talent they had.
So you are wrong about hiring him or that he won't take us where we want to go.......The post makes no sense really.
All speculation. There are no guarantees Harbaugh would have taken us to the playoffs. This board gets sillier every god damn day.
Count me as one who really hopes we do get Jeff Fisher, and here's why - his pros are so much better than his cons IMHO: Pros: -His teams finished 13-3 THREE times, and 12-4 one other time. When was the last time we even sniffed such a record ... -One of those 13-3 teams was recent, just four short years ago, with Kerry Freaking Collins as QB -Let's not forget he ALMOST won a Superbowl, and made another conference championship -He brings an aura of respectability back to the franchise, something we really need. He gives me a sense of at least some form of adult supervision for my team. Not that I felt Sparano was out of control or anything, but I would feel like it is coming from someone who actually has the experience to truly supervise. I think this will help with Free Agents. -He was successful in the 90's, and as recently as 2008, showing he is one to adjust with the times -Sure, he's only made the playoffs 6 out of 17 years (it's really 16, he can't be held accountable for taking over late in '94), but in those other 11, five times he was 8-8, and was 7-9 two other times. Not saying 7-9 or 8-8 is good, but if you look at the years following, he usually got his team back in the playoffs soon after. Meaning, his team may have been down for whatever reason (lack of talent, change of key players, ownership meddling, etc.), but it doesn't stay down for long. After going 7-9 in '01, his teams rebounded to go 11-5 and 12-4 the next two years. In '04 and '05, as McNair was breaking down, the team went in its biggest hole, going 5-11 and 4-12. He then rebounded again to 8-8 in '06 (with a Vince Young he didn't want), followed up by 10-6, then 13-3 (in a season in which Young went Coo-Cool for Coco Puffs, and Kerry Collins stepped in). Point being, he may find his team in a bad place, but he always gets them out of it! I'm guessing had Adams not been such a doosh, he would have had this year's Titans at least where they were at 9-7, and maybe better. Cons: -He made the playoffs only 6 of 16/17 seasons. See my last point above. No matter what the situation, he seems to rise up out of it! Given a better ownership situation and possibly more control, as he may have here, his down times may not be as bad. And let's face it, despite our 0-7 start this year, he ain't exactly inheriting a bunch of stiffs on this roster. -He's a run-first, defense oriented guy. OK, I may buy this one a bit, but he also seems to be able to adapt between QB styles (i.e. McNair-to-VY-to-Collins), and I don't see why that would change now. We may not be passing like the Pats, Saints and Packers with him, but who's to say we won't be close at some point if he finds the right trigger man. And why exactly would it be bad to play good defense? Whatever the scheme he settles on (existing 3-4, or his historical 4-3), would any of us be shocked if we weren't even better on that side of the ball right away? This is a good thing. -He's a retread. Gotcha, I can see this too. Perhaps the best coach for us out there is someone we're not thinking of right now, or the Bears special teams coach, or whatever, but if you are going to hire a "retread," why not hire one who is respected league-wide, and who has a pretty decent resume, especially once you take a closer look. Give me a choice between the unknown (which could pay off huge, but could also be Cam Cameron), and the proven and steady known, I'm taking known every time.
I also feel that the major problem with this team is the severe lack of talent. It has been Ireland's job for the last four years to supply this team with talented players. He has done a lousy job so far and just like you, I don't see the Dolphins becoming a winning organization again until Ireland is no longer the person responsible for selecting the players in the draft and in free agency. Who ever is advising Ross to keep Ireland as the teams GM is someone who obviously does not really care about the future of the Dolphin organization.
I don't agree that we lack talent across the board. IMO we just lack talent at a few key positions. And since Ireland has only had final say for 1 year it is inaccurate to claim he's had three years to provide the talent.
I'm not gonna argue with you, or defend Ireland all that much, but I think saying a "severe lack of talent" might be a bit of an overstatement. I would agree, we've had a severe lack of talent at QB, which is a big problem, but there is some real, solid talent on this team that has either been brought in, drafted, or kept by the Tuna/Ireland regime: -Long -Pouncey -Carey (until recent injuries) -Bush -Marshall -Bess -Wake -Dansby -Starks -Solial -Vontae -Smith -Carpenter -Fields -Fasano -Odrick -Langford There's also a list of guys who may not be stellar, but who are solid at times, and contribute - the Hartline, and Will Allen, K. Burnett, Y. Bell types. Heck, even Matt Moore proved to be decent, and MAY have some surprising upside! Again, I don't want to defend Ireland, because in my heart of hearts, I want him gone - simply for the way he does business (closed from media, calls key prospect's mom's a prostitute, etc. etc.). But even true Ireland haters have to admit there is a good solid core of talent on this team. Lord knows what we could do with solid, consistent QB play (from Moore, or otherwise).
As for the main point of the thread, I think that Fisher is one of many that could get us there with a good QB. A truly elite QB can be good in spite of the system. For all the other QBs you need a good fit between the system and the QB to at least achieve playoff level success. I think Fisher is one of the coaches that realizes that. I also think that more and more NFL coaches have been coming around as every year you see more teams switching to modern, QB friendly systems.
And remember, Fisher won with McNair - a unique talent, who could run tough, and could thread the needle when needed; Vince Young, an absolute head case with talent who had to be hard to figure out; and, lastly, an aging veteran Collins, whose best days were really behind him, and was a complete 180 in style from VY who immediately preceded him. And Collins took them to 13-3! I'm guessing he will get the most out of Matt Moore as well, not to mention whoever we end up drafting/signing to play QB.
I predict we land Fisher and he brings another level of toughness to this team. I predict we don't get that great QB this offseason, so it's up to Fisher to get the most out of Matt Moore, which he will. I HOPE that we can land one really good stud offensive lineman in the offseason and hopefully draft another one. Fisher + Moore + improved offensive line = playoffs (barring disastrous injuries)
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be having misgivings about Fisher if that guy had gotten that one yard that one time. Understanding this, I still want Gruden, but Fisher is A-Okay in my book.
Perhaps Fisher is more hungry having been short that one yard! A point to ponder! Maybe he has nightmares about it, "I coulda been a Superbowl winning coach ....AHHHHHHH" Perhaps that's what will drive him to lead us to the promised land!
He has the best resume out there right now. And I'm not counting Gruden or Cowher because one will not be coaching next year and the other has conflicting reports on whether he's going to return daily.
