Anyone Still Think Matt Ryan Is the Franchise QB That Got Away?

Huh?? What makes you think that ?? Long had an injury plagued year, but there is no indication that he's 'breaking down'...none at all...

So great...the Falcons can make the playoffs with Ryan but can't win, and the Dolphins....go 7-9, 7-9, 6-10.

What is this, a contest of which team sucks more? Pretty sure we still win that.

I'm not knocking Ryan as a QB just yet. The question was do we think our team would be better off with him and not with Long. The short answer is no, I don't. I'm not convinced that Yates, Flacco or Tebow are franchise guys either but that doesn't mean that I think they can't win. The thing is, the Ravens, Texans and Broncos won because they had good talent around their QB. (Except the bronks...they only won because Pitts had so many injuries it almost wasn't fair for them to play)... Our QBs....Penny, Henne and Moore simply haven't had very good talent around them. It's not rocket science stuff. It takes more than just a QB....Now, there have been a few QBs that can carry their teams (Elway, Unitas, Marino, P. Manning, etc)...that's a different answer to a different question...

They have to contend with the Saints. We have to contend with the Pats. Seems like pretty much a wash to me.

Atlanta wins in the regular season against the weak sisters of the poor because they are a better coached team than Miami and also have better overall talent at the skill positions. When Atlanta faces tough competition, they falter. Atlanta was 2-6 vs teams with winning records this year. The winning percentage for the teams they beat was around 0.350. The winning percentage for the teams they lost to was around 0.550.

My stance all along has been that Matt Moore is just as good as Matt Ryan, and Miami didn't have to use a first round pick to get him. Matt Moore's career numbers with crappy teams are almost identical to Matt Ryan's career numbers with Atlanta. I'd venture to guess that Moore's numbers would be better than Ryans if you gave him the talent that Ryan has around him.

Whether Matt Ryan is a franchise QB or not, nobody will ever convince me a team should take the best LT prospect over the best QB prospect in the draft provided that team doesn't have a franchise QB on the roster.

That totally depends on the evaluator in charge..If the evaluator doesn't believe in the best QB prospect available then no, you take the for sure best tackle in the game.

29 TDs to 12 INTs, almost 4,200 yards, 7.4 YPA.

Is this the state of the NFL now that 4,000 yards is so blase we have to say "Prolific?"

His completion percentage is 11th in the league.

    Yes he was prolific.

In this case the evaluator (Parcells) did.

The reason for the regret? Because they went with Henne, and that killed everyone (except Ireland who I believe is giving Ross sexual favors of the oral kind to stay on).

Matt ryan = NO Henne. NO Pat White.

Well, maybe if it was a QB class completely devoid of talent. But if you pass on the top QB prospect to take the best tackle prospect because it's safer, then picks like that lead to the mediocrity we're mired in now. I'm ok with a FO missing on a QB pick. I'm not ok with a FO ignoring the position out of arrogance or fear. And you're comparing a prospect to "the best tackle in the game." They are BOTH nothing but prospects at the time the pick is made. The tackle pick will always be the safer pick, but the teams that swing for the fences on QB are the teams that will win the superbowls.

Wait and see. We'll end up seeing 2 of the best QBs in the game squaring off in the superbowl this year. And it won't be Timmy Tebow representing the AFC. :shifty:

I don't think picking Long over Ryan led to this mediocrity, but I do think there is something to the idea that a front office that is afraid to swing for the fences with Ryan is also one that makes the crap personnel moves that leads to where this team is.

The talent around Ryan, and Sanchez, imo is the huge divide between their play and even Henne's look who they throw the ball to, and OBJECTIVELY look at our Skill position guys.

No contest, Reggie Bush rushed for 1k yds and WOW, Shonn Greene had a 1k season and no one noticed.

Mike Turner would be embarrased with a low 1k season.

And yet in Miami, Bush is thought to have a great season.

We need playmakers folks, it ain't all the Qb.

QBs taken high bust way more often than LTs taken high. Generally the LTs who bust are injury issues, not talent/motivation/focus ones. That's where safe comes in.

WHY IS IT WHEN A QB HAS A BAD GAME HE IS NO LONGER A GOOD QB AND VICE VERSA .the reason you guys arenot seeing Matt Ryan having much success is because he has a dumb head coach who runs a qb sneak on two consectutive plays and fail.Matt Ryan cant have success if his people around him are not making plays and that coach of theirs is very likely to get fired tommarow.

In almost every draft there will be an Eli Manning, an Aaron Rodgers, a Jay Cutler, a Stafford, a Bradford, a Cam Newton, and sometimes an Andrew Luck. You see where I'm going with this? I could go back much farther. If a GM is picking at #1 overall, or any other scenario where you have a choice of the best QB prospect vs. the best tackle prospect, and doesn't have a franchise QB on roster, and chooses the best tackle prospect it's almost always going to be a bad decision.

If you want to imagine an unlikely situation in which there are no good QB prospects and a GREAT LT prospect, yeah there could be a situation where taking the tackle makes sense. I guess you could say the 2007 draft might qualify... But even Jamarcus Russell was considered a great QB prospect. Nobody thought the Raiders were silly for the pick. Taking a first round QB is never risk free, but if team's want to win in today's NFL, it's really the best chance to find their own franchise QB. Other teams usually don't part with them.

Just remember. An elite tackle on his best day can negate one player on the defense. A good to elite QB on his best day can negate the entire defense.

Matt Ryan is what many thought he is, Jake Long is what we knew he would be. Show me the difference between Pennington and Moore over Ryan, even Henne. No win loss record. THats a false stat. Ryan did not win most of those games his running game and D did. Show me WHY he is a top 10 QB, he is not.

Actually I did think the Raiders were silly for the pick. Posted back then (finheaven) Russell was not even a top 10 prospect...had Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson and then Patrick Willis as 1-2-3.I have to admit I did have Quinn at #5  behind Thomas at #4.Didn't even have Ginn in the 1st round.

Didn't even think that was a good game...had 199 yards on 40 throws. Under 5 ypa, kind of typical Ryan.

The game against GB last year I thought really showed Ryan's weakness. Not just the pick 6 on a poor throw and decision, but had another pick in the end zone when his receiver had 5 yards on DB, but under-threw him on about a 20 yard pass. Then missed a wide open White down the field in the second half that could have changed momentum and put Atlanta within striking distance. Was about a 25-30 yard throw with no defender within about 10 yards.

Today, as an example, hit White on a 20 yard pass who was wide open. White caught it but had to go to the ground to catch it. Had he stayed up who knows how much RAC he would have had. Then the next pass was to White at the line of scrimmage, no one covering White but under-threw him. White had to lean low and behind him to try and grab the ball as his momentum was moving forward. Hit both hands so I assume it goes as a dropped ball. But if that is a respectable throw it is an easy catch and run for 10 or more yards.

The one thing I notice Atlanta's receivers do well is square up to Ryan when he throws. I imagine they practice that quite a bit.

Matt Ryan just lead an offense that produced 0 points in a road playoff team that was 9-7. Hardly a dominating team. Show me where Brady, Rodgers, Eli, Brees, Rivers, Big Ben ever did that. 0 points against a Giants defense that was maligned by fans and media alike all year.

Matt Ryan is something like 19-2 entering this year when Michael Turner goes over 100 yards and was 500 without Turner hitting 100 yards rushing.
Entering this season, games where Matt Ryan threw for over 300 yards the Falcons were 4-5. Two of those games also had Turner over 100 yards and the Falcons won both.
Matt Ryans worst season was one where Turner got hurt and the running game was not consistent. He couldnt carry the team the way the elite guys do.

Any game where Matt Ryan has to carry the offense hes toast. He is not a franchise QB. Hes not even a top 10 guy.

Passing up a LT on a HOF track is idiotic. Where we failed wasnt taking Long over Ryan. Where the front office has failed is not adequately addressing the QB position in general. This means passing on a Ryan Mallet, not trading up for a Christian Ponder of he was really their guy as was speculated, only having Chad Henne the last two years and not investing a high pick in a QB. You can never have too many QB's. Even as a Henne fan there would be no reason to complain if they invested more picks in the QB.

Interesting...I thought it was Manning under pressure early today and getting hit a lot more than Ryan, just the reverse of what was expected.

Ryan: 41 throws, sacked 2 times and one wasn't until the very last play Atlanta had the ball on 4th and 10 with 1:01 left in the game, hit 7 times
Manning: 32 throws, sacked 1 time, hit 5 times

But I think Ryan's pressure came later in the game when the Giants knew he was in passing situations so far down.

And down by a few TDs,because he isnt anywhere near a franchise QB, even a "gamer" imo. Remember they traded like 5 picks to get Julio Jones.TO me that SCREAMED they didnt think Ryan was a FRANCHISE guy. Tell me when the Colts, Packers,Patriots, Broncos under Elway, 49ers under Montana of Young, or Fins with Marino ever gave **** up for an offensive piece.? They didn't, because a real "franchise"qb makes everyone better. Not the other way around

How many games can Jake Long win for us? 0. 0 now, and in the future. A left tackle is just a left tackle. The best teams do not have great left tackles.

I'd rather we have picked up Matt ryan and he isn't the answer then you keep going. Jake long is most certainly not on a HOF type career path. Right now the path is pointing down since this was a down year so ... ;) :D

Is Matt ryan a franchise QB? Maybe not.

But not picking Matt Ryan sure isn't going to get us a Franchise qb and oh crap, we still don't have one.

Looks like Ryan belongs in the "sucks when it gets to the playoffs category." Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, etc.

And who's to say Matt Moore couldn't of won more than Ryan with this team?

Maybe he's not a franchise qb? Honestly, I have nothing against Ryan at all, but after today and with alllllll the weapons he has on that team, he shouldn't even be in the franchise qb discussion.

I saw one play towards the end where the Giants purposefully blocked and a guy flew by about 5 ft from Ryan. They were messing with him, and it was a lot of fun to watch. They punked Roddy White and dominated their *** all day. Maybe I was watching a different game, but I picked it up at the half.

How is it a LT does not contribute to wins?

Show me a team with a poor LT and you will usually find a starter that gets sacked a lot, fumbles a lot, and ends up injured. Not to mention the holes that open up in the running game. Have a poor LT and the team essentially loses a player on passing downs as a RB or TE have to stay and block instead of being another option for the QB.

In reality, that's not how it works out though, is it? You miss on a quarterback with a high pick, and your team is looking for your replacement soon.

Your line of thinking that you take the quarterback even if you don't think he is a franchise quarterback is the reason team's waste so many picks on quarterbacks. It is the reason a David Carr goes first overall when he should have been drafted much lower. It is the reason Tim Couch and Akili Smith get taken so high. It's the reason San Francisco drafts Alex Smith with the first overall pick. It's the reason Joey Harrington goes in the top 3 picks and Kyle Boller goes in the top 15. Reaching for a quarterback is absolutely the worst thing a GM can do in the draft.

Plus, when you have the 1st overall pick, you have the opportunity to draft the best player in the draft. Jeff Ireland, Bill Parcells, and Miami did that. They got the best player in the 2008 NFL draft, by far, IMO, even if I didn't think so prior to that draft. There is no comparison between Jake Long and the other players drafted in that particular draft. He is by far the best player, and the early results of his career indicate that he may be a Hall of Fame caliber player when it is all said and done. He's the best offensive lineman in the game today, and considering that left tackle is a premier position in the NFL, it is foolish to say that Miami should have passed on him to draft Matt Ryan when Ryan isn't even close to being a Pro Bowler at his position, much less an All Pro.
