What does any of that have to do with the fans, which was the point of your post? And the fact remains that even coming off bad seasons Wayne Huizenga landed the biggest fishes available, because despite our struggles, this was seen as a premiere job. Now in 2011, we are perceived as something of a clown show and are competing for a coach with a team that has been far worse than us over the last 4 years. The only thing that's changed since 2005 is that we have a different owner. And I agree that the perception of Ross is unfair. But he created the bad perception and its up to him to clean it up.
Right, and giving Jeff Fisher $8M a year and full control isn't a dream contract. And Parcells could have bailed and gotten paid in full a year earlier but stayed on. I hate the fat douche too but lets not lose our minds here.
It's a bit ridiculous some of this stuff is surfacing now. If you're observant and do a little reading between the lines, this is nothing new. The franchise has a bit of an image problem around the league. I'm sure this is something Fisher knew of or has been advised of before he ever interviewed with us. I'm sure he's done his due diligence, and given that he just didn't reject the Dolphins flat out might be an indication that there's more bluster here than necessary.
Ross is the Stugotz of Owners, completely unaware of himself... "Winning the Superbowl? That's easy, you just have to go out there and do it."-Ross
Yes, absolutely. I think he's just doesn't know how to be an NFL owner yet. Like you said he's learning on the fly.
The fans are fickle. Have you been to any games this year? The stadium was half empty the entire season. People don't care about this franchise like they used and have no patience for the rebuilding process.
Interesting twist Adam Schefter A source close to Jeff Fisher insisted delay in chossing bw MIA and STL is not a leverage play and neither side has yet to make an offer.
Can you please provide a reliable source to confirm we offered Fisher full control (meaning we also fired Ireland) and 8 million a year? And guess what... I'd take 5 million a year in Indy with limited control knowing that I have both Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck behind me for the next 10-15 years.. Does that factor in to this discussion at all, or are we still under the delusion that Miami is a hot destination given our last decade of ineptitude?
You can make a strong argument that blaming Ross and Ireland is unfair. But that doesn't change perception. And for those of you who don't think it's a big deal if this perception causes us to miss out on our top coaching candidates, then it very much is a big deal.
Wow. If true, that makes no sense at all unless they are defining an "offer" as a formal written contract. I can't imagine that the Fins haven't at least told Fisher the basic parameters of a deal.
Staying "the hell out of the way" usually lends itself to disaster. Letting someone that has no financial stake in the health of the franchise act as if he owns the franchise is not a good strategy for any business. The fact that after Jimmy and Saban both left, the franchises were left with direction should say enough.
It was seen as a cushy job. Huizenga was clueless and would pay whatever the big names wanted. There was no accountability. Those guys, especially Saban, had free reign. Why do you think Saban was such a dick? Because he had no boss.
Well, Hysinga gave Parcells $5m a year and then had to pay Sparano $4m a year... Ross is giving (supposedly) Fisher about the same to do both jobs...Don't see much of a difference here... Besides, this is just hearsay at this point. Ross has made his mistakes. Mainly his biggest was thinking that a lounge in the stadium and JLo, Fergie and the Williams Sisters would put more butts in the stadium. He's finally, I think, figured out that the product on the field is what will sell tickets to JRS... Quitcells didn't get the job done. Hopefully, Fisher can. So if he has to play tiddlywinks while Fisher decides, that's fine with me. He's not doing anything at this point that any other owner would do given the same circumstances...
But according to some here, the guy who spent a billion dollars on the team and was a sold a bag of rocks, needs to be hands off to maintain our perception of being a top tier franchise even though our last Super Bowl victory happened well before 90% of it's fanbase was born. Yet I still fail to see how Ross can be lumped in with a Snyder, Al Davis or a Jerry Jones type...
It's perception more than anything. I don't think Ross is anywhere as bad as those guys but I don't work in the NFL either. Stringer Bell brings up a lot of good points. I think structure is good. I wish Ross would hire a team president (not Peterson) whom would oversee the football side of things and be Ireland's boss. Right now Jeff is the highest ranking executive on the football side. I'm not really sure he's qualified to hold that much power.
Saban was a dick then because he's a dick. He's a dick now at alabama, just like he was at LSU. He is an insufferable, insecure, mean spirited, and borderline sadistic human being. But he is a great football coach.
He was/is a dick, correct. But there are only so few places that would welcome that type of person, and more importantly give that type of person full control over a billion dollar enterprise. Wayne Huizenga had no problem doing it, and it burned him in the end.
Well, if by "so few places" you mean basically any NCAA or NFL football team, then yes, you're right.
How many NFL teams have given carte blanche authority to a head coach? How many head coaches overrule the owner in the NFL?
If Saban was winning he would still be the coach and him and Scott O'Brien would still be terrorizing workers and staff. No one would care and Wayne would be lauded. Winning cures all.
The Patriots, the Eagles, Holmgren had it in Seattle, I'm sure there are others I'm missing. And what are you talking about overruling the owner? Saban never "overruled" Huizenga. Huizenga suggested they sign Brees and Saban told him that the emdicals were bad and that he didn't think Brees would be ehalthy so Huizenga allowed the guy he put in charge of such decisions to make the decision. If Huizenga had said, "Nick, I am ordering you to sign Brees and I will give you a contract extension to prove my commitment to you" then Brees would have been signed
Didn't Robert Kraft take Terry Glenn against Parcells' wishes? Isn't that why Parcells left? Andy Reid wasn't given full authority when he was initially hired. Seattle by no means is considered a "premier" destination. So why did Holmgren go there? Because he was given whatever he wanted. They're no different than Miami was under Huizenga. This is exactly my point. The owner is making suggestions to the coach. When has Huizenga ever overruled, or done something against the wishes of the coach? He gave Parcells a contract that let him leave and take the balance of what he was owed. He was a clueless pushover who would write blank checks. Who wouldn't want to work for someone like that?
Ohio Fanatic do want fries with that crow? BumRush the media has become too much of a pain in the *** in my opinion but fact is fact the dolphins are not selling merchendize and ticket sales are down plus when the games are at home you can see and hear the oponents fans make more noise then dolphin fans look we should not expect us to just turn on sports radio and listen to the media prop up our rivials while they bad mouth Miami we should nt just lay down and pretrend to be happy . we fin fans are entitled to hear good things about team well.
Until next January when Fisher leads the team to a WildCard spot and a 1st round playoff win. The week before the divisional game, Jay Glazer and Peter King will be praising Stephen Ross for spending the money and hiring a top notch coach. I mean, how hard must it be to do these people's jobs. I would love to be able to take a hot topic and BLOW it up into something totally exaggerated and pointless come 12 months later. Why does anyone care what these guys say? Seriuosly? You think it hurts the organization? What in the world do free agents, coaches, etc. care about what Peter King and Jay Glazer say. Done with the media. So stupid.
My point is that the #$@train didn't start with Ross taking over this team. It started going downhill the 1st day after Marino retired. We had some successful anomalies since then, but nothing that slowed our descent into bottom 5 or 6 teams in this league. people are forgetting how bad Wannstedt, Spielman and Cameron were. and guess what, those @#$!bags weren't hired by Ross, they were hired by Wayne. people bagging on Parcells? that's fine, but he wasn't hired by Ross either, neither was Tony. Ross made his one boner mistake last year interviewing Harbaugh before firing Tony. ON the list of mistakes this franchise has made, it's not even top 3.
Sure, if that happened it would create a positive perception of the team. IF that happened. That's a big IF. Hell, right now it's a big IF if Fisher even is the coach of this team. We can accuse the media of blowing things out of proportion, and they are guilty of that. But most of the time these are just guys getting paid to call it like they see it and they're not seeing good things with our Miami Dolphins right now. As much as we might think otherwise, most of these guys don't have hidden agendas against our Dolphins.
That may be a bit of a stretch. Brees did an interview that was shown last weekend and said Payton came to his hospital room and told him he wanted him to be his QB - No ifs, ands or buts. Brees did do his due dilegence, but I would think Sean and the Saints were the frontrunner from the start.
Did any of you consider that maybe, just maybe, Fisher's wife has too many points on her license and therefore her auto insurance is too high?
diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick
Can someone please explain the dissatisfaction with Ross right now? The way I see it, the only reason Fisher's even considering Miami, is due to the fact Kroenke is balking over paying him 6 million a year, (which "is" some heavy cash) for executive pay as a VP of operations, while Ross patiently sits ready, willing, and more than able. Money goes a long way toward owner appreciation, and I think some who are selling him short, should read the Rams posting board, and browse what life is like with a more budget conscious owner.
I have been saying the same things on this forum for months and all I have been told is that I am a lousy fan and I need to find another team to follow. I would love for the Dolphins to have an owner and GM who were respected around the NFL. but it just isn't the case. All I want for the Dolphins and our great fans is an owner and a GM who know what they are doing and can rebuild this team into a consistent playoff team once again. I have had my doubts for some time about Ross and Ireland. Perhaps now some individuals on here will understand that my view is shared by many around the NFL.
