Packers “unlikely” to use franchise tag on Flynn Posted by Mike Florio on January 15, 2012, 1:26 PM EST Getty ImagesTwo weeks ago, a stellar, record-setting performance from Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn sparked speculation that the Packers could use the franchise tag on the free-agent-to-be, in order to prevent him from hitting the open market in March. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Packers are “unlikely” to do so. Though they have several more weeks to make a final decision, use of the tag would entail significant risk. The Packers would have to offer Flynn a one-year salary that is expected to be in the range of $14.5 million. That’s $6.5 million more than Aaron Rodgers‘ base salary for 2012. Also, once the contract is offered to Flynn, he’d surely sign it — making the money fully guaranteed. Then there’s the fact that any team trading for Flynn would have to sign him to long-term deal, with $14.5 million in 2012 serving as the starting point. In the end, the maneuver probably entails far more risk than G.M. Ted Thompson will be willing to assume. Unless, of course, a team desperate to secure “dibs” on Flynn works discreetly with the Packers to set up a sign-and-trade scenario that allows Flynn to receive a fair contract, to go to his desired destination, and to allow the Packers to get some compensation for developing the seventh-rounder into one of the hottest names on the free-agent market. Even if the Packers only get a mid-round pick, the ability to ensure that he goes to an AFC team could make the Packers more inclined to try to work something out — especially if the Raiders and new G.M. Reggie McKenzie, a long-time Packers employee, decide to make a play for Flynn. Other teams that could be interested in Flynn include the Browns, Redskins, Dolphins, and Seahawks. : :
Wow. What the hell was that? Let me help out: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/15/packers-dont-plan-to-use-franchise-tag-on-flynn/
I think it's more than a possibility that we atleast inquire about Matt Flynn. Don't see us getting a QB in the draft unless Washington rolls the dice on Flynn and Cleveland drafts more talent to put around Colt McCoy. IN all fairness to McCoy he had nobody to throw to this past season. I think he may get one more chance as the Browns QB. Atleast thats what i'm hoping for. Flynn to Washington McCoy gets a second chance We draft Griffin.
I either want flynn or griffin but knowing the dolphins we will end up with jason cambell and another offensive tackle.
No way would it cost us this to get him. No one will pay him that and Green Bay would be stupid to tag him for that!
They'd be in cap hell if they franchised him and nobody traded for him. A bargain if you keep him in a similar system.
Washington signs him, it does set up the "Is Cleveland thinking of the next A.P. in Trent Richardson" scenario.
still too early to get our blood pumping on this!! Flynn is nice, but let's see if RG3 falls into our lap.
Seriously doubt that will happen, especially now that fisher is in St. Louis and he has a star QB and #2 pick in the draft! I would love that as well.
Or we could go for the potentially better QB, Flynn, and not draft RGIII, and use our 1st round pick on a high impact player
Potentially better is the key word. To me it all depends if he falls into our lap, if not I agree sign Flynn and get an OT that can make a difference right way like Reiff or Martin.
I wouldn't have any objection to picking up Flynn, but the downside is we'd hsve to pay him a buttload of money, most likely significantly more than a team like the Seahawks would pay.
Why wouldn't GB place a transitional tag? That would guarantee them draft picks and not have to pay Flynn $$$ associated with the franchise tag.
I'd love to pick up Flynn but we'd have to change our O to a west coast offense. Otherwise we're just wasting our time.
I think you need to read up on the transition tag, because you're way off. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transition_tag
Signing Flynn imo SHOULD be our top off season priority after hiring a HC. We can use our 1st round to shore up OL, WR or OLB...Broyles would be a nice addition in the 2nd.
I'd rather risk some money than trade an entire draft personally....Flynn and Moore can go at in camp. Flynn is unknown to a large degree, I can't see someone giving him a unbelievable contract, he's going to get a lot of guaranteed money but the deal could be structured to not kill the cap if he doesn't pan out. I don't care if trading for a backup or signing someone didn't work out before, if the draft isn't going to fall our way we need more than Moore and a late round pick/UFA if we want to compete in the East next year.
Don't the Packers run a west coast O? How else can you assess Flynn? It would be insane to expect Flynn to excel in a system that he hasn't played. I'd imagine the logical thing would be to TRY to copy the Packers' system if we sign Flynn.
Yes, change to the WCO. Remember A.J. Feely of the Eagles? A WCO QB who could never figure out Pornstache offense? If your signing Flynn with $18-24 million then let him do what he has shown he does best.
I'm sure that's why some aren't sold on RG3 and would rather take a chance on Flynn. Hey, aren't you one of them?
The ACL I am sure has led him to slide. I am Broyles fan. I think he is a much better version of Bess. If we do sign Flynn and implement a WC offense I think he would be a great addition. Landry looked like a possible 1st round QB with him, but mid-round selection without him. Will he last to the 3rd? Perhaps...depends on how he recovers pre-draft.
He tore his ACL in the beginning of November. Even if he was ahead of schedule, he'd not be ready for the combine in February. His best chance would be Oklahoma's pro day (or his own individual workout) in early April. That'd still only give him 5 months to recover, and realistically a poor showing at that point would be pretty good. He'd probably be able to participate somewhat in most rookie and mini-camps, and while he'd be ready for training camp in all likelihood (assuming he didn't have to sit out ever due to swelling or soreness) he still wouldn't be "100%" until the 2013 season. I'm not saying he'll certainly not go before the 3rd, but if I had to bet on if he'd still be on the board after rd2 or not, I know where I'd put my money.
High impact player... here we go again whats higher than a goddam QB. We cant win because we got no QB, We cant secure a good coach cause we got no QB. QB dictates the team without we are the next Detriot Lions for years to come.
If the Packers are not going to franchise Flynn we'd have to take a try for him. Realistically we have 2 options, Flynn or give up a bunch to get RG3. I'd rather keep our picks and get Flynn in here. Flynn is not a sure thing but he was terrific in the Detroit game. Last year he was 24 of 37 for a 64.9 complettion pct, 251 yards, 3 td's and a pick in his only start last year against the Pats. Those aren't bad numbers to back up his Detroit game with.
But Armando said: So I guess we can forget it because CLEARLY if ARMANDO said it's not happening, then it's not happening. CLEARLY.... /sarcasm He could be this years Kevin Kolb. The issue would be the cap hit if you cut him... And I'm hearing Kolb is likely to be released by the Cardinals already... how can that be possible considering he signed such a lucrative contract? Well, could it be that the Cards actually protected themselves in the form of a roster option that they could choose not to exercise, or at least something similar to that which would releasing him somewhat palatable??? Would the team signing Flynn want to do something similar?
The thought of overpaying for Flynn because we're desperate to find a qb scares me. Best available option doesn't make him good.
Yup, read my sig. And even if we don't sign Flynn I have zero desire to trade up for Griffin. If he falls into our lap at 8/9 so be it, but I DO NOT want to trade extra picks/players for him.
If Ireland does the contract properly he will only be overpaid for one season. If it turns out he sucks you cut him. But not go after him because you're afraid he might suck is silly. You can't play scared, and you can't GM scared. You have to take chance. Just take calculated, intelligent one.
I agree you can't play scared, but making moves out of desperation and just praying they work isn't a recipe for success either. If they think Flynn has a good chance of being something, ok go for it. If they're saying he's all that's out there so might as well, then I don't like it.
Personally, I don't think signing Flynn is a desperate move. I think he has a good chance to be a great QB.
Kolb was TRADED. Flynn is an unknown as to whether he will be traded or be a FA. If he is a FA, you have less control in the process because you will be bidding against other teams ALSO interested in him, so to say we could sign him to this or that is dreaming. He will take the best paying offer he gets. Pay up or move on. I see him getting a BIGGER contract than Kolb with more guaranteed money. While that makes him a bigger gamble, going this route allows us to use our draft picks to acquire some other much needed talent, which has already been brought up, but.....
