i guess the one major benefit of bringing in McCoy .... would be that he HAS to value the OL.

he also knows the value of a good defense, since DENs success was written on the their backs.

for Bowles, whilst he gets no props here on this site -- he is a former player ... so he does have something the other 2 do not. i like the fact that he does have familiarity of our players. it means he can make some informed decisions immediately ... whereas the others could not. does he 'suck' as most infer, simply because our secondary isn't a strongpoint on this team -- or that he is associated with past regimes ... that is rather misguided based on the success of other recent 'successful' coaches and the failure at the job just before becoming a HC. we have 1 very good corner (Davis), a nice veteran (Allen), maybe an up and comer with Wilson and nothing of note at S ... what miracle was he supposed to produce with that. maybe folks like me were wrong about Clemens and Carroll -- maybe their too stupid or maybe their ego makes them uncoachable ...

i just want a guy with a vision and the strength to make it happen. Fat Tony did not have this ... being a 'tough, high effort team' is NOT a vision.

at this point for me its: Bowles > McCoy > Philbin .... i understand Ross' infatuation with Philbin as he clearly yearns for a high octane offensive - playmaking environment ... something i'm not interested in.

WHOA. you got me there. That suit is sharp. But the smile? not so much. Good Coaches have smirks and half smiles.

Can anybody find any kind of video / audio of McCoy? I have a feeling the tie breaker will be stage presence. I saw somebody posted the Bowles press conference in another thread, and I wasn't too impressed. Didn't seem to have much energy, very soft spoken. That's not gonna fly.

  12. I want a large breasted female midget with a background in roller derby for our next HC.

I'm like Ross, I want a guy with successful NFL Head Coaching experience.

But I don't change my mind when one freaking guy turns down the job.....

To me, HC experience isn't necessary, but a plus. I would prefer a guy who has more than 4 years Coordinator experience/was actually calling plays(more an art than a skill, can't really be taught IMHO). Most importantly, I want a guy who is going to change the culture. I want a winner, not some loudmouth ahole who will burn the players out within 3 years.

McCoy was a college QB (Long Beach State and Univ of Utah) and was breifly on the 49ers squad. He also bounced around NFLE for a while.

Bowles throughly underwhelmed me. When Jim Bates took over for Wanny you could sense a renewed energy with the team. I didn't see that with Bowles.

Was thinking the same thing. Believe it or not, there is something to this. Not a lot but something. Tony Sparano often looked sloppy, or dorky, to be honest. And his teams reflected him.

I want a guy like a Harbaugh or a Belichick - intense and sharp.

Based on this criteria, I'd say it's a toss up between Bowles and McCoy.

  19. I would be interested in knowing the credentials of HOF coaches before they found sucess at the postion. Is there really any hard and fast protypical background that would indicate a high probability of becoming a good hc?

Well, I don't know if anyone has done that research, but here is some info on recent Assistant to HC hires:

"But of the 12 former assistants who were hired for their first NFL head coaching job since 2009, only four have winning records: Rex Ryan (28-20), Jim Caldwell (26-22), Mike Munchak (9-7) and Jason Garrett (13-11). And Caldwell was fired this week, after the Colts fell to 2-14 without injured Peyton Manning this season.
The combined record of those 12 coaches: 164-231. That group includes several who were highly regarded as coordinators, such as Minnesota’s Lesley Frazier (6-16), Todd Haley (fired by the Chiefs after going 19-26) and Steve Spagnuolo (dumped by the Rams after going 10-38, and agreeing to become the New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator Thursday)."
