To be fair, it was Ross that really wanted Harbaugh last year and Ireland supposedly told him they would be fine sticking with Tony. We know how that worked out, so if true, Irelands' ability to pick a good coach is questionable while Ross might (I really hope so) have a knack for it.
well..we ***** about it today. tomorrow we close ranks and kiss his *** till he fails miserably (or not).
Maybe Ross offered Philbin the job a couple weeks back but gave him a couple weeks to deal with the death of his son? Maybe they interviewed McCoy and others in case Philbin backed out? I am just glad it's over.
He looks better on the sideline with his hat on than the bald look program pic. Actually, I don't know if this will work with Ireland's background, but we need to sell out all the way with the WCO if we are going to Philbin, imo. At least we'll have potential for a 21st century offense.
I like the move to center this team in an offensive direction. Not sure if he'll keep Daboll, part of NE's coaching tree or surround himself with his own cabinet and philosopy, but considering his work here has been productive, he'll find work easily enough elsewhere. Equally as important now for Ross and Irish, is ensuring qualified leadership replaces the loss of Nolan.
Yeah that's great. Let's poach the worst freaking passing defense(literally) in the history of the nfl, and promote them to lead our D. It's all going as planned!
Now if we bring Tom Clements in as Offensive Coordinator...I may get excited. Please don't be Cam Cameron II, please don't be Cam Cameron II...
Makes Flynn the obvious big free agent target, makes him much less of risk to sign to a long term deal as well. If Philbin doesn't want Flynn that says all we need to know. I kind of like the idea going into next season with Flynn, Moore and maybe a 4th round+ developmental guy, we could have a legit Qb rotation very soon if we sign Flynn and give him the right system.
Curious wouldn't signing Matt Flynn's be Ireland's job, I wonder how much say Dr. Phil will have in player acquisition?
Was he? Honestly, I don't think we really know. Green Bay is absolutely loaded offensively. And he didn't call the plays. I'm certainly not one who thinks a good head coach has to have called plays in the past. But I don't think being the non-playcalling offensive coordinator of these Green Bay Packers proves his aptitude. I just hope he has a better presence than Cam Cameron did. Good man, but he couldn't lead men. I've not read/heard anything that suggests Philbin does to this point. If the potential for Matt Flynn is what pushed him thru, it was the wrong approach IMO.
As to the Cocker comments I'll take that success. 1 national title and robbed in the 2nd game. Imagine that 2 SB apperances and 1 win. You nerds would have to change your panties.
Signing him, yes. But in all probability Ireland's not going to go anywhere near Flynn unless Philbin recommends him.
It was the Dave Wannstedt era on steroids. I'll take those results, sure. But it doesn't mean it was a good hire. It just means it took that long for the last coach's works and efforts to wear off. Talk about robbed, the Canes should have played for the title in Butch's last season. Gotta love computers.
He was my favorite of the 3 finalists because he is the only one that comes from a winning tradition .IMO He has the best upside. I imagine he will be bringing along some of the GB assistant coaches too....hopefully including Clements
I hope he also brings with him something we havent seen here in a long time...a foot to the opposing teams throat mentality on offense when the Fins have a lead. Thats something Green Bay has and I cant wait to see it.
At this point I'll happily take Philbin, Flynn, and a solid right tackle. See if we get lucky with our #1 or trade down for more picks. (Flynn probably wouldn't happen as we are hardly in control of that)
Except he won. Is it so different from Billick who's name has been thrown about? And this fanbase would sacrifice one of their own for a SB win. Sometimes the end justifies the means.
