If the team were going to make a run at Flynn anyway, Philbin was the best choice. Even if it's not a Flynn thing, I'll give the guy a chance.
In 2009 and 2010, GB was 5th in pass defense. The past 5 seasons GB's defense has ranked 6th, 3rd, 1st, 2nd and 1st in interceptions. HELL YES, give us some of that.
Dave Wannstedt won 33 games his first 3 years. And he went to the playoffs. Matter fact, he's the last coach to win a playoff game in Miami. Hence, the 'steroids' designation. Coker inherited the best team in the nation. He didn't sustain or make the Canes better. And once his contributions came to fruition, the program fell off a cliff. Same with Bill Callahan. He took Jon Gruden's team to the Super Bowl and got fired a year later. We need a guy that can build a program. So I hope he's not Larry Coker! That said, I couldn't care less what the guy looks like.
IMO, it ranks somewhere between jack and squat in importance. Look for instance at Andy Reid coming out of GB. 5 seasons as TE/Asst OL coach and 2 yrs as QB coach. Never called plays. Didn't hurt him too much in Philly.
Wanny inherited a pretty good team and wasted it with faith in an average QB and a mentality that another Trent Dilfer would bring it home. AT least Coker capitilized on what was given to him. People argue tha Gruden won with Dungeys team and vice versu. In teh end they all won which is something that hasn't happened here in far too long. Yes I want long term consistency but not without a SB. If I was told a SB in 4 years and 5 years of despair I'll take it as I have already survived it and then some. Don't act like you wouldn't be digging on him in a pair of Haggars and a Members Only jacket.
Doesn't Matt Flynn worry everyone that he'll just be AJ Feely or Kevin Kolb? He wasn't a former first rounder like Aaron Rodgers. It's pretty risky if they go that route.
John Clayton referred to McCoy as the DC of the Dallas Cowboys in that video clip. Such a silly little man.
Not if Philben thinks he is the real deal. He has seen him devlop and seen him practice so he should have a good idea of what he really is or isn't.
Another thing to point out is none of his decisions to make the defense better worked. Hypothetically if Eddie Moore and Jamar Fletcher became all-star players then maybe Miami does better at the superbowl. He was such a bad GM.
I agree, but if you're considering making that move it makes a good amount of sense to bring in a coach with experience with him who can tell you how big of a risk it actually is.
I'm okay with Philbin as the head coach, and the fact that he didn't call the plays doesn't bother me so much as he was integral in developing the game plan. If he brings Clements in as the OC, and they push hard for Flynn I would be happy especially if the taught him up like Aaron Rodgers. If not at least the OC knows how to work with QB's which has been somewhat of a sore point here for quite some time.
If people were depressed seeing Marshall drop some passes, then I'm pretty sure there's going to be mass suicides in Miami if Finley comes here.
I agree. It seems like a good hire, though I do understand why many worry it is another "Cam" hire. I'm excited to see what he can do with this team.
Apparently he was an O-line coach under Kirk Ferentz in Iowa. I've always heard Ferentz mentioned as a o-line guru... if anything this guy has worked with pretty impressive coaches.
I don't know "this", just like you do not. He just doesn't instill confidence IMO, maybe i'm wrong, but just like any other fan i have my beliefs based on nothing more than a hunch. So what games have he coached as a head coach that makes you believe?
He doesn't need to instill confidence in you just in the staff & players. How many games had McCarthy, Peyton or Tomlin coached as a HC to make anyone believe in them?
I'm happy. Think of it like this, you can say that the Packers offense is so good because of 3 people, McCarthy, Rodgers or Philbin. McCarthy was the worst OC in the league when he was hired. Rodgers is great, but Flynn broke some records in that offense. Philbin made the gameplans.
