Rodgers might know what Philbin could be leaning towards.

I think he's just saying it makes sense, given the system. All things being equal, it may give the Dolphins an advantage, but he still is a FA and his agent will try to get him the most money he can.

Spot on. The big advantage we have in Philbin is not being able to better lure Flynn in...its just (presumably) having more inside information about his capabilities and limitations than anyone else in the market right now. Hopefully Philbin knows what hes doing if he brings him in ...for that matter...if he doesnt.

Is he really worth more to anyone but us though? I mean he played well in ONE game he isn't going to get 50 million guaranteed and if he does then good luck to him. I could see him getting a deal close to the one Kolb signed for and if Philibin thinks he's worth it and wants to put his neck on the line for him I think thats not a bad risk to take to try and solve the Qb situation here.

Since he is mostly unproven if Philbin thinks he's worth getting it could help make him a good priced deal. Or another 3 years of mediocre.

I honestly do not know what people see in this guy. He may do OKAY in this system, but did anyone really watch that game against the Lions? Did the Lions' defense even play that day??? All but ONE of those TDs were made by the receivers or backs. First TD, Jordy Nelson (who is a top-5 wideout in my book) stiff arms for the TD. Second TD was thrown up on an offsides play by the Lions (not a great throw, and again, all Jordy Nelson). At least Flynn had the awareness to chuck it up there. Third TD was all YAC by the back. Fourth TD? An underthrown ball that went about 50+ yards in the air. Not pretty, in my opinion, and Nelson again, makes that play. His fifth TD was all YAC by Driver. And his sixth was a nicely placed pass on a one-on-one to Jarmichael Finley in the endzone for about 4 yards.

I think he makes good decisions (given the system) and he understands where he can/should go with the ball. I do not, however, think he is a great talent. He has a very average arm, and is decent in avoiding the rush (in the limited video I have seen).

If he signs with Miami, I would like to see him signed for 2 years and the contract be heavily incentive laden. Let him prove himself. If he signs with someone else for the kitchen sink, good for him, but do not color me impressed.

IMO, this QB is not worth it. I'd like for him to prove me wrong, but he is a stop-gap at best.

I liked him prior to the game against the Lions based on what I'd seen against NE and in preseason. I see him as a good decision maker with good short and medium accuracy who is decent at avoiding the rush. In the right system that is a guy that can win you games. He is not an elite talent, though. He won't work in any system. I believe that due to his superior ability to make plays against the rush (compared to Moore) that he has more upside than Moore. He is not my first choice (or second), but I do believe that Philbin would be able to win with him. I think it's likely that Philbin will know how to put him in situations where he is likely to succeed. That is basically the attraction. I don't think a two year deal is realistic. He is a far better prospect than Kolb was and should expect money in that range. That's not the kind of money that the top tier QBs get. It's more like the second tier. I don't really see that as out of line for what he is. He's just not my first choice b/c I see a few draft QBs with potential to be top tier QBs and I don't want to pass that up. Maybe it's a question of how risk tolerant you are and obviously how highly you rate and trust your ratings of the draft QBs. Flynn, in a Philbin/Sherman system, probably has a higher floor than any draft QB (other than maybe Luck). But he's also more limited by his physical talent than those draft QBs that are first round prospects.

I dunno, I don't necessarily think Flynn negates getting Tannehill/Wheeden. Ireland does have a history of doubling down on a position. Even last year, Bush & Thomas. My fear is that, we'll take Flynn or Manning and not spend our first pick on a QB, so we'll miss out on Tannehill or Wheeden.

I think Flynn does negate doubling down with a first round pick. If they land Flynn and are inclined to double down, I'd expect a later pick. I do like Russell Wilson in that case. Manning probably doesn't just b/c at best he gives you 2 or 3 years and most likely 0 years.

We grabbed Bush then took Thomas (projected to be the seocnd RB taken) in the second. If we followed the same plan this year for a more important position (granted not one where two guys can play at the same time), the second best QB needs to be taken Rd 1.

If they don't do it, they should. What's the worst that can happen? We have trade bait in either one of them in year or two. IMO, you pick who think is a franchise QB till you get one. Then you can pick for other stuff, until that QB hits 30, then you start over picking QB's again.

 What a terrible QB to get the ball into the hands of players that make plays. Luckiest QB ever to have lucked into throwing for 9 TD passes and 731 yards in only 2 starts.

He is particularly lucky at throwing the long ball. Flynn was 3-3, 146 and 2 TD passes on throws over 31 yards as compared to an unlucky QB like Brady who was 1-15, 46 yards and 0 TD on throws over 31 yards.

    Yea, luckiest QB ever!

In a similar article I like Rodgers had to say this:

Rodgers on Wednesday told a Milwaukee radio station he sees the Dolphins and the Seattle Seahawks as the “two top dogs” in the race for the talented backup, expected to become an unrestricted free agent in March. This is based on a conversation with Flynn “in the last few days,” Rodgers said of his backup quarterback in Green Bay the past four years.

    http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_seasonticket/2012/01/aaron-rodgers-calls-matt-flynn-to-the-miami-dolphins-a-strong-possibility.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+sports%2Fseasonticket+%28Season+Ticket+%7C+Sun+Sentinel+blogs%29

Tells me Flynn has Miami on his mind and now the Philbin is coach I would think the Dolphins go to the top of the list as long as the contract offer is there.

You're not going to get an argument from me against drafting a guy with franchise QB potential. I'm just saying that if they take Flynn they probably won't take another 1st round QB. And there is some merit to the idea of having the team firmly behind one QB and for filling some other need positions on the team. I also think that RB in a league where most teams use a committee is not an analogous example to the QB position.

That might be a bit unfair...sure he wasn't Aaron Rodgers out there, but he still threw for close to 500 yrds and say what you will about Detroit, it was a game they HAD to have...it was for all the marbles...so I think the Detroit D was on the field...

At any rate, that is really the question about Flynn. Is he ready to move up or not. Is the small sample we have of him enough to judge him for a huge payday. No doubt about it, he made himself millions of dollars in that one outing, so you have to say that he can perform under pressure...if he goes out there and bombs, loses the game, throws picks, whatever no one (Seattle, Washington, Cleveland, Miami) is having this discussion.

The advantage we (the Fins) have is that we have a more than one game and a few mop ups to base our decision on. We have a guy that was with him every step of the way since being drafted. Now, the kid may demand more than Ross/Ireland want to pay, but if Philbin gives the word to go after him, you have to figure the odds are the decision will be a good one...

Look, I'm just as happy to have him or Manning or Moore or Tannehill or whoever as long as we're winning games...

What marbles are you referring to? When the Lions played the Packers in their last regular season game they had already made the playoffs as a wild card team. They had no chance of winning their division because the Packers had already clinched the division. Whether the Lions won or lost that game really meant nothing for the Packers and that is why they did not even suit up Aaron Rodgers for the game.

I am sure the Lions would love to have won the game, if for no other reason then the fact the Packers are one of their big rivals. Other then that, the Lions certainly were not playing for all the marbles you imply they were. In fact I see this game as nothing but a glorified exhibition game, played in the regular season. I certainly would have loved to see how effective Flynn would have been in a game which actually meant something to either team.

Flynn did have great stats for the game, but I don't think that anyone should infer from this game that Flynn is the franchise QB the Dolphins have been looking for since Dan Marino retired. Philbin has seen him play and practice everyday for the past few years. I am sure that he knows if Flynn is the QB he wants to risk his job on. If the Dolphins attempt to sign him to be the starter next year, I will take this as a sign that Philbin thinks Flynn is ready to be a starter in the NFL. Right now though, we have no idea if Philbin even has any interest in Flynn as the teams future QB.

Okay, I did not say or imply he is lucky. I even mentioned that he seems very well adept at getting the ball to his playmakers, which is a very good thing. With that said, I have not really seen any NFL-type throws from him (under pressure or on a rope to a receiver who is well covered), ala, Eli Manning or Drew Brees. I just see a guy who has an average arm who did well in the system he was under. I just do not think he has the arm to make throws in tight windows, which is pretty much a league-wide requirement. His long ball is a bit inaccurate and reminds me of our one-year wonder Chad Pennington. I just do not think those Detroit game numbers reflect what we'll see from him game in and game out.

If he does not come to Miami, we'll know why. If he does come, I hope he proves me wrong. I would hate for him to be what Scott Mitchell was to Detroit.

EDIT: I guess my point is, is he the QB to carry a franchise, or is he just a piece of the puzzle? You can certainly win with a non-franchise QB, but can you win Super Bowls? I would be happy for a 49er-type season, but in the end, Alex Smith could not make a first down. Franchise QBs win Super Bowls. You always have a chance with a franchise QB. Look at the last 20 Super Bowl winners, and I bet you could count the "non-franchise" QB winners on one hand.

I guess my question to you is: Do you think he is a franchise QB?

Not true. Det had a chance to travel to ny giants if they would have beaten the packers. I think atl had to lose that week also but it def was not a practice game for them. I'm sure they didn't want to play at saints.

Echo jw3102 regarding it's Philbin's decision. If he pushes for Flynn, then that's all I need to know.

2 games, which is 2 more than I have played in the NFL, is not proof enough that Flynn is a franchise QB.

Haha your right, Flynn could just be another overrated Kevin Kolb or worse another Jay Fiedler but maybe he is Aaron Rodgers 2.0 we just don't know yet but we will find out in the next few years...

Soooo, how many TDs could you throw in your first game or second game? Or are you ready to admit your comparison is ridiculous?
