http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7534274/sources-peyton-manning-medically-cleared-resume-nfl-career Looking better.
not really looking better. The fusion had already taken, we knew that. The issue right now is the strength. Manning is healthy to play but he has not regained his arm strength and no one knows if/when he will
This is the neck. Apparently the plateau report may be false. Apparently he's throwing passes with at least one receiver recently. Hopefully the bicep will be good soon.
Medically cleared, and physically able to play are two different things. Lets remember, he was cleared for contact in December. Nevertheless this is a step in the right direction. Good for Peyton, regardless of location I just hope his career can continue.
Max Starks from Pittsburgh had somewhat the same issues this past off season. He was cleared before the season started but no one wanted to take a chance. Pittsburgh had many Oline go down and they signed him later in the season. They are now glad they did.
Wow...Mort on ESPN just reported the doctor said if his arm was strong enough he could play this Sunday. Puts Indy in an interesting position. Will definitely draft a QB with #1 pick but do they keep Manning?
This is to much of a gamble to take him.Everybody is just looking at a name and not the fact he may never regain his arm strength. I have a bad feeling we our going to sign him then he won't play and matt flynn signs with the seahawks.Matt flynn becomes a star and once again we our searching for a qb. Its not like we haven't made the wrong choice around here on qbs in the recent past.Let the redskins make this mistake and pay for the broken down hall of famer like they always do .
4 manning threads on front page of Dolphins forum. I post the most relevant one (where Irsay actually talks for 9 minutes about Manning and his future and what goes into making the decision) and it gets moved to Other NFL...
Thing is, the Dolphins will probably go for either him or Matt Flynn. You can't say you trust Flynn more, because odds are he falls into the "AJ Feely, Kevin Kolb" category. I'd take the chance on a super bowl winning hall of fame QB. The only question for Peyton is if he can stay healthy...the questions for Flynn are much greater and nerve-racking. And you can still draft Tannehill or Weeden...so Peyton seems like a no brainer. If he gets hurt, you bring in the rookie. If he doesn't get hurt...you are an exciting playoff/super bowl contender. Arizona will probably get Peyton though.
I will take my chances on a 26 year old qb who has played great in his only 2 starts compared to a 36 year (once great qb) with a fused neck and a suspect arm.I think mannning is done. People need to stop comparing flynn to kolb,do you remember the packers took a chance on a guy named rodgers who only had 1 start prior to the pack letting farve go.They knew he was going to be good by watching him in practice everyday. I am hoping philbin sees that in flynn because if anybody knows its him. Just remember if we sign manning they are not going to draft a qb because they are going to use every draft pick on players that can help manning win now.Manninig is 36 how many more years can he play even if he is healthy?
Aaron Rodgers was a first round draft pick, not 5th (AJ Feely) or 7th round (Flynn). Flynn might be great, but the odds are not in favor of that. We would need some major luck for him to be Tom Brady II.
Right on. I like Manning. Great player. But he's 36. It would be foolhardy to throw a huge chunk of money at a guy who's overall health is in question and expect him to take this team to the big game. He's won one with Indy. And that was when he was injury free. You do not pay big bucks to an aging QB who will probably make your team better, but not great in the long run over a younger guy who could potentially make you a contender for several years. Granted I'm a little leery of throwing big bucks at Flynn. But the thing is, he has 10 years or so left in the league, is familiar with the offense Philbin and Sherman are bringing to Miami, and could potentially make Miami a contender for a decade. Where as with Manning, we can HOPE he is healthy enough to make us a contender for 2 seasons. I'll take Flynn, even though it's a risk.
I think the concept of "RISK" needs to be better defined. There are controllable risks and uncontrollable risks. Flynn's risks involve the possibility that he is simply not good and I'm sure he will want a contract that has a substantial base guarantee so we have to accept uncontrollable risks. With Peyton, there's the possibility of controlling his only risk by structuring his contract almost entirely based on certain milestones (starts, success etc) with specific outs after set amounts of time. I think Peyton would be amenable to that. If he is back to All Pro form then the money is worth it. If he never recovers, then there is little cap hit and we move on ... very little risk. The Phins are in decent position talent wise right now. Adding a couple FA's and hitting on 2-3 draft picks would really fill out our team. If Peyton's healthy, we are VERY good. If he's not, we have Matt Moore and a well stocked team with plenty of assets as well as all of our picks next year to make a run at someone else to outplay Moore.
I don't care if he ever plays another game. I want him to have full use of his neck and all his extremities for the rest of his life.
This is the reality. ESPN is reporting that quaterback Peyton Manning has been cleared to play by two doctors who determined that "the stability in his neck would have allowed the quarterback to play this Sunday if the nerves in his arm had regenerated to a satisfactory performance level." Great. Manning, as you know, has had three neck surgeries the past 20 months and the fact there is stability in the neck is a positive sign for the 35-year-old as he tries to return to his NFL career after missing the 2011 season. But ... The nerves that had basically quit firing, causing repurcussions in the triceps of Manning's (right) throwing arm, including him feeling numbness, suffering atrophy, and losing strength, are apparently still not completely regenerated. And that is very, very important because that means Manning doesn't have full strength in his arm. And if he doesn't have full strength in his arm, he may or may not have an NFL caliber arm yet. The report says that Manning's problem is not a "safety issue; it's a performance issue." Um, well the only reason the Dolphins are even remotely interested in Manning is his ability to perform at a Pro Bowl level. Nobody cares that a quarterback can be safe. That is fundamental. They want a quarterback that can performn. And if Manning still is fighting performance issues, he's still not a sure thing. If he's merely a gamble with uncertain arm strength, I'd say his chances of joining the Dolphins remain ... a long shot at this point. Now, if the nerves do indeed regenerate to the point Manning's arm resembles the helped him win four MVP awards, the Dolphins definitely will be one of the teams chasing him -- assuming he is available. But we've not reached that point yet. ----------- Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolp...ng-cleared-to-play-sort-of.html#storylink=cpy
Sign him immediately when available. Keep Matt Moore around just in case. He doesnt suck, hes just not a long term answer imo. Draft Osweiler, Foles, Tannehill (if available) or Weeden in round 2 or 3 to develop. They could be an answer later in the year. Best case scenario, you are covered for this year. Worst case, Manning's arm craps out and you have a placeholder and a guy who could develop in to a viable NFL starter.
If his arm craps out we will have nothing but matt moore. No way they draft tannehill or weeden.Manning is old they will draft players to win now not a qb to sit on the bench.
I think Ross will feel like the franchise deserves a chance at Manning and put on the full court press, and some of you may not respect the guy for some of his rookie mistakes, but I will bet you that Man will do everything in his power to make it happen.. Man gets off on the full court press..I'am glad he's my owner of my team.
You know, I know there are some that may be against aquiring Mannning because of his age, and how it might impede our development of a younger QB, but you know what, sometimes in life, you just gotta say, what the fu^%, and go for it.. As long as it doesn't change our plan in this draft to aquire Weeden or Tannehill, I don't understand why anyone would object.
Yea,36 years old, fused neck, damaged nerves in throwing arm.Am I missing something here a year younger? This guy aged 10 years in 1 off season.Everybodys in denial because his last name is manning.Wake up people peyton manning is human and the human body can only take so much.Do you really want to see this guy getting paid all of that money holding a clipboard? This is something daniel snyder would do.
I feel the same way even If he would make our favorite team better the risk is just too high I would cringe every time he even comes close to getting sacked.
If we can't move up for RG3 then it is a no brainer. Huge risk, but whats the worst that could happen? we won't win a superbowl? well we won't win a superbowl without Manning or RG3 so we have nothing to lose....
Certainly, i think we all can agree if Payton is available and 100% he gives us the best chance and I think he would feel we would give him his best chance as well. Having said that, without a workout verification i cant see him being worth the risk, and I would not be happy trading a first rounder for a 36 yr old QB who sat out last year due to injury! Just Because the Raiders were stupid with (a younger and healthy) Palmer, doesnt mean we should. The cost that is acceptable for Manning, assuming its a trade situation, is what someone is willing to pay. If we are going to throw picks at a QB rather go after RGIII, The best situation IMHO would be drafting a OLB (Upshaw) or a T (not Reif) in the 1st, a mature seemingly ready Weeden (who has been impressive int he senior bowl) in the second and then WR or S depending on BPA. Granted Weeden is older, but this team is ready with a good QB now. His showing in the senior bowl seems to show he is the 3rd best QB and I cant see another team OK with drafting an older QB like we can. Cle, Wash, Sea etc, dont have enough components around the QB to warant picking an older QB. One that may be too old, or close, when the team is ready.
