The last time a starting QB for the Miami Dolphins completed two complete(16games) consecutive seasons was in 1997 & 1998 under Dan Marino. To me this stat says alot. It is hard to have success or chemistry with all the changes. IMO we should focus on sticking with a guy & giving him time and patience and letting him develop chemistry and continuity and I think this will improve our results more than anything.
Won't ever happen. You saw how Henne got the blame for everything when everything was not his fault. Henning and Lee didn't even have the word development in their vocabulary. Sparano backed them and gave Henne the hook and replaced him with Pennington. Terrible mistake. We saw this season Henne improved with Daboll but now Ross has listened to his impatient, whiny fanbase and plans on going after an injured, aging veteran QB. This team loves to chase it's own tail impatiently. Driven by it's own tail chaising impatient fanbase.
Once the Dolphins actually find a quality QB, I have no doubt they will stick with this QB for a number of years. Unfortunately the Dolphins have not had success in finding a long term, capable replacement since Marino retired. Henne was suppose to be the guy but he wasn't and as much as some on here want to blame Sparano for Henne not developing as a QB. I think it had more to do with the fact that Henne is just not that good a QB in the first place. Moore was bought here to be a backup and while he played well in spots last season, he was not consistent in most games and especially in games against the quality opponents on the Dolphins schedule. I don't think that Ross is listening to the fans in regards to wanting to find a franchise type QB. He merely is looking at the fact the Dolphins have been 20-28 over the last three seasons with the QB's which have been on the roster during this period. The reality is that Henne was not as good a QB as Moore is and Moore is merely a stopgap at the QB position until the Dolphins actually sign a QB who can come in and be the long term starter.
Consistency means nothing when it's consistent garbage that you're trotting out on the field. Find a real QB, and this won't be a problem.
A young quarterback that comes to Miami as a 1st round, 2nd round or whatever pick is going to have a tough road ahead. No matter who he is or what pedigree he has if he struggles from the start he is going to get flamed by this fan base. Its just that all of these fans have their feelings of frustration and aggravation close to the surface and its hard not to express them. Is it unreasonable expectations? No, but it is some pretty high expectations that will exist until a quarterback comes in and plays consistently and shows the abilities of being a leader and a player who can carry a team on his back when the need arises. He will eventually show up but it is just a matter of when.
Dolphin fans are no different than any of the other fans around the NFL. Heck, earlier in the year when the Giants were 7-7 and it appeared that they wouldn't make the playoffs this season, there were some Giant fans that wanted the team to fire Coughlin and trade Eli Manning in the off season. For years while the Eagles were going to the playoffs, year after year, many Eagle fans were complaining about the quarterback position with Donavan McNabb. So I don't feel that the fans in Miami are any different than fans around the country. The problem is the Dolphins have not be able to bring in a young QB in the last decade which actually had the necessary skills to be considered a quality starter in the NFL. This was suppose to be Henne when he was drafted four years ago, but it just wasn't. Henne is not a quality starter and the fact Moore had more success as the teams starting QB than Henne did, clearly shows that the problem was Henne all along. Henne supporters just found it easier to blame Henning and Sparano. I agree that any young QB who comes to Miami is going to have a tough road ahead, but I think any young QB on any other NFL team would have the same tough road.
This is why any mention of the Jets picking up Henne prompts nightmarish thoughts. If Henne ended up the late bloomer, with a cannon arm, such a scenario could be a harsh lesson in patience, particularly if we had to endure growing pains from another rookie QB.
Come on guys, quit trying to make Dolphin fans sound any different from any other fanbase. Fans of every NFL team are impatient. And those of you guys inferring that fan support or lack thereof has any impact on a QBs failure or success in the NFL are kidding yourselves. It's not the fans or lack of development that has caused QB problems in Miami. It's a band-aid, bargain basement shopping, 2nd round picks, one game wonder free agent approach to the position over the past 12 years which have left us mired in mediocrity. Time to make a real investment in the position. Bring in Peyton Manning and / or draft a QB in the first round. Luck and Griffin won't be the only QBs with first round grades by the time the combine is over. As to your point about giving a QB time, I agree, but that QB should flash some talent in his first year to prove he deserves time. Passing in the NFL has gotten easier since 2005. And so has the transition from college to the NFL. It's no small wonder that QBs like Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Matt Stafford, Sam Bradford (2010), Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, and even Sanchez have been able to have significant success in their first NFL seasons out of college. If a QB like John Beck comes in and can't handle a snap in his first year, he's never going to have it. Can't wait seasons for the light to come on when nobody's home.
Henne going to the Jets is part of my nightly prayer. God's already granted me one of my prayers of Sparano going to the Jets, hopefully he has more in store for me...
Perhaps, but sometimes I'd swear we have an industrial sized jinx in our midst, consistently dragging the entire ship down.
The problem for this team has not been "patience". The problem has been investing in talented prospects at QB. If you recall we stuck with Jay Feidler for a good bit while refusing to bring in a talented Trent Green when he was available and never drafting a QB during the tenure. How did that patience work out for us? It's about finding talent period.
Well, the problem is that the guys who have come in and out of here weren't Dan Marino's, Peyton Mannings, Drew Brees' or Tom Brady's. It's not for lack of trying, we just haven't found that guy.... And if you look at the guys we're discussing, none of them deserve to be given more time and patience with. You might make a case for Henne and MMoore, but other than those two...None we worth the effort...
