All true except it's not for 15 yrs, only thru 2014. maybe all the scuttlebutt is about after the current deal expires. But for now, it is exclusive on directv. I would like to see it available by all venues. Maybe that could drive the price down.

That's good that you have had that experience, but national polls, and publications that study this stuff put DTV WAAAY higher than Dish. I've never dealt w/ Dish myself, but I've been almost 100% happy w/ DTV in eight years, short of a couple small things, that were later fixed too!

Prices are slightly better, but - as has been said - DTV still does offer more channels, and more importantly, more HD. I have heard that the Dish DVR is better, though, and they had the whole home DVR thing before DTV, which always peeved me.

I'm sure Dish is a fine service, though. I just don't have any personal experience with it, so I can't say for sure. If they did get ST, tho, they would probably instantly grab some market share from DTV, I would not doubt that.

    DirectTV for me:

    - Charged me an extra $100 to set up the service above and beyond what I was told.
    - Reception was spotty at least once a week.
    - I was consistently over charged for things I didn't order.
    - I had to have my box replaced 3 times.
    - And then when I fired them, there was a big giant fiasco with contract breaking and getting the boxes back to them.

    DishTV on the other hand:
    - No extra charges at hook up
    - No extra charges on my bill
    - Box worked great (plus the remote worked from anywhere in the house, and the OS is so much more user friendly. Like being able to delete multiple saved shows at once.)
    - Only time I had reception issues was bad weather which is normal.
    - It was cheaper. and I got all the channels I cared about.

The only reason i put up the Direct was because of NST. More channels is a scam anyway.

    Can you elaborate?

And my experiences echo that of DolfanTom's.

Its a scam because we all only watch a handful of channels. And things that count as more channels are music channels no one uses, (like "eastern latin dance for singles over 50" music channel) or obscure local channels people with cable never watch.

Do you get the NFL Network?

What, you're not in to "eastern latin dance for singles over 50??????"

I can only elaborate for me, but of the 200+ channels I have there are only about 15 I watch or consider worth watching. Most of them are filler crap like QVC and HGTV and Zumba etc etc.

    My experiences with DTV:

The company itself has always been fair and honest with us. They resolve the issues to the best of their ability.

The companies they contract out to do the work on the other hand can be an absolute nightmare. You name it, I've been through it in the past few years. Technicians ruining carpet with muddy boots, knocking out service while there and leaving, no English, not showing up, etc. To be fair, some of them have also been great.

BUT, Direct TV has given us significant discounts for any burdens we've endured.

Also, any of you paying full price for Sunday Ticket aren't trying. Call the cancellation or retention department. If one rep tells you no, call back and try again. Half off is the most I've ever paid.

And when your contracts are up, call the cancellation department and ask for the world or you're going to [competing cable or dish company]. They'll bend over backwards to keep you.

I love the fact that I'm no longer under contract, and haven't been for a while. I'm one of their so-called "A-list" customers or whatever. It's nice to hold that over their head each August! Ahh .... the free market is a wonderful place!

I went for a long time with no contract. We were legitimately going to switch to Verizon for the multi-room DVR. DirectTV offered us their entire multi-room package for free with 3 new upgraded receivers. Would have been over $300 normally. For all that they roped us into a 2 year contract. But when we had another nightmare disaster scenario getting it all installed, they took an awful lot off our bill and gave us some premiere channels for a year.

Have Dish TV at work and Direct TV at home. Have to deal with both daily and I prefer DirectTV.

The big knock against DirectTV is they'll step over existing customers to pick up some new ones. New customers get amazing pricing deals while existing customers will get the shaft.

This is true and that's exactly what you tell them when you call up and ask to speak with the cancellation department. If you do this, often times they'll give you the deal new customers are getting, or at least do something for you.

I'm stuck in that I only have the Sunday Ticket, no other packages. I'm grandfathered in from when that used to be allowed. In that scenario you have to pay full price.

So, Dish Network is a scam as well? Just asking cuz they plenty of crap no one else watches as well.
i'll take Directv any day over Dish. I've had a couple boxes go out over the last 15 yrs or so since they've been around but they've always been replaced hassle free.

The only time I recall ever being under contract is when they give you equipment. When I looked into HDDVR a couple years ago, it's was like $300 for the box. But I lucked out on a promo they ran, free equipment and free HD pkg for one year. Only thing for me was a 2 yr contract. Almost over for the contract but it's the best deal i've done and wouldn't change it for the world. By contrast, around here, Comcast has charged for digital service. Next month it all goes digital where Directv has always been digital. IMO, no comparison.

You know, I haven't had them set up the whole-home DVR thing yet - was going to do that by next month actually. You just gave me a great idea, and I can't believe I didn't think of it! At the very least, I'll get some sort of discount over the install. I'm fine w/ the 2-year contract thing after, as long as I feel I'm getting a deal ahead of time. I mean - duh - I'm here, gloating over the fact I hold the whole canceling ST over their head, and I didn't think of this myself ...

Yeah, when they were giving ST away for free to new customers last year, that's what I told them - that I've been doing this for seven years, and you're just giving it away now to anyone who signs up. I'm trying to remember what I paid overall - I think it was $120-$160 they brought it down for me last year, something like that.

    Yeah, I figured

Cheapest route through all this mayhem :)
