Who do you think is going to literally step up to the plate for the Cubbies this year? Is it the youngster from Japan, whose name I'm not even going to TRY to pronounce? Heh heh heh heh haaaaa ...

    (wheeze)

    Let me hear you!

That blast by Fukedome was awesome. What a first game he had.
To bad they couldn't win it in the end.

Maybe Marmol should be the closer and not Wood???

You would really want to stick Marmol in the closer spot? That would be a complete waste of his ability, in my opinion. I'd rather he came in the 7th inning and face a teams best batters in a close game rather than facing the teams worst in the 9th to close it out. Kerry will be fine and it wasn't a "save" situation anyway. So until he comes in to that situation I'm going to reserve judgement.

How do you know the teams best hitters will be up in the 7th and their worst in the 9th? The idea of having your best bull pen arm come in during the 7th inning seems a bit...odd. If indeed Marmol is your best arm, I'm saying for arguments sake, I'm not really following the logic of your argument. The 9th inning with the game on the line is a bigger spot than the 7th, no matter what the score is or who you're facing. I'd want my best arm coming in when it mattered most.

That's exactly the point. I'm not saying the best batters will come up in the 7th and worst in the 9th, I was using a hypothetical situation. Marmol is easily the best relief pitcher on the Cubs, and top 5 in the major leagues, and making him the "9th inning only guy" would be a waste of his talent.

Marmol should be used in crucial points in the game either 7th, 8th and I'm sure he will be used in the 9th on occasion as well. Protecting leads, holding ties, holding down a 1 run deficit, coming in with a runner in scoring position and 1 or fewer outs etc.

Also, this isn't like we're talking about some rookie making his first MLB appearance. It's Kerry Wood who has pitched in high pressure, huge games. I seriously doubt the pressure of closing games will get to him. It was 1 bad performance, in a non-save situation.

Gotcha about bringing him when the situation dictates, I misread your post. I wouldnt be worried about Wood either. If he's healthy he'll be fine closing imo.

Yeah, that's exactly what I think too. Personally, I'm more worried about Howry and his usual slow starts. That and the fact Theriot needs to be gone from batting #1..

I only say Marmol because I think he's the Cubs best option. Kerry Wood just didn't look like a closer out there. He looked scared and nervous. Not intimidating, like a closer is suppose to look.
I know it was his first outing, so hopefully he will get better and grow into the roll.
I'm just saying the first impression wasn't very encouraging.

Told ya :tongue2: Kerry will be just fine.. I do have to say, however, I was NOT expecting that kind of start from Dempster, very impressed.

If Dempster keeps THAT up, this could be a really nice year.

Dude is an obp MACHINE.. Now if only Lou would get Theriot down into the 8th spot where he belongs, get Fuku up to the leadoff spot, Dero up to the 2 spot and Soriano down to 5 we'll be in business all year

I hate when the games aren't on WGN  I'm going to have to Sopcast or TVU or something... Anyway, hopefully the team shows the same plate discipline, sans pie and soriano, that they did yesterday and get on base.

MLB (and NFL for that matter) are so in the wrong for allowing DTV and others to charge ridiculous amounts for these packages.

Its sad TBS is no longer carrying the Braves

Well, that sucked... Rich didn't pitch terrible but his control is still shaky at times. Still early in the season and the offense looks like it has in the past, living and dying with the homeruns and not having enough patient hitters to manufacture anything.

Also props to the $136 million man for not knowing how to cut off a ball.. I love Sori but his play so far has been ridiculous.

2 solid performances in a row and Soriano FINALLY did something. Derek is back to 2005 Derek and now if only Sori and Aramis will pick it up.

His .046 average was cute for a little while but his ground balls not leaving the infield is getting kind of annoying.

Man....how disrespectful to the rest of the Cub nation to throw 18 balls on the field during a game. Makes the rest of us look dumb, like ignorant fans..

Oh yea, I didn't see that game.. I love the tradition of throwing a ball back when you catch it but that's a little overboard. Although, I guess when it comes to Adam Dunn there is no catching his homerun balls :pointlol: Every series the Reds play the Cubs he always bombs one out to Sheffield.

And the key is patience. They're taking an insane amouint of pitches per AB. Best start since 1975. Looking good!

The only kink in the armor I see coming up is Soriano coming back. Obviously when he is playing good he is incredible, but so far this year he has been anything but and he's coming back from an injury. Couple that with his impatience at the plate and the Cubs refusal to move him anywhere other than 1st in the lineup and I think the Cubs runs will go down. If only they would swap Kosuke and Sori in the batting order..

I am a little surprised that Dempster has done so well as a starter. Now with Lilly rolling and Sori back crushing the ball, we could open up some space in the division.

The only thing that concerns me would be the rotation for the playoffs. The Cubs NEED a solid #2. Going into the year it should have been Rich, but with his severe control issues I don't see him being the dominant pitcher he could be this year. Lilly has been all over the map this year, Dempster has been way better than expected, but it remains to be seen if he will continue it.
