So I'm thinking of getting a tablet, but I'm not really sure if I should get one now or wait. I've heard rumors that the ipad 3 announcement should be coming within a week or two. Not to mention I don't know if Samsung will be coming out with a new galaxy tab soon. Thoughts?

If you absolutely want one now- go for it. If you can wait, then you should wait. There is always better technology being released.

They're the same thing as cell phones. There'll be a new one out every 3 months w/a minor upgrade or variation.

And thats the problem with waiting...theres always something new coming out and so you can wait forever.

    I have this: http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/10.1/spec.html

Lighter then iPad, Android OS 3.1, bigger screen, 4G, Samsung uses Super Amoled screens so everything is a lot more vivid.

Since I already had a mac and iPhone I felt getting an iPad would be repetitive. Im happy with it.

It all depends what you want to use it for though. I just wanted a toy I could mess around with without voiding warranties and stuff. Android OS is much more customizable...

You're sadly 4 (or more) months late as you could've got an HP Touchpad for like $150.

    Indeed.

sidenote: Why people still choose to overpay for iPads (and most other Apple products) boggles the mind.

Well the hope was that it by waiting there would be a price drop in some of the tablets on the current market, or the next gen of tablets would blow the current gen out of the water.

I have been looking at the Galaxy tab recently and I think that would be what I get. However I guess part of me is still debating whether I really need a tablet or just an e-reader.

Its a matter of which OS you like and what youre looking for. In a phone I wanted teh battery life of apple because I dont have a house phone and charging my phone 3x a day wasnt really practical. My iPhone I get through a day + no problem even with a lot of web browsing and playing games. On a tablet, like I said I just wanted something i could mess with without voiding warranties.

If the next generation blew the old generation out of the water you would want the new generation like everyone else lol. you said it in your reply to Stitches, you dont invest in old technology. Thats liek investing in a car they dont make parts for anymore.

The e-reader/tablet debate is different. I dont believe in going halfway. If i want the nook or kindle app I can download it on android.

It runs android just fine by all accounts, which is enough for most people to not worry about future support.

I'm still getting occasional FW updates too.

How about sideloaded user content, any issues there? I think I going to get the 8.9 tablet, it seems like the right size and price point for me.

The galaxy tab 8.9. It's identical to yours but just smaller.

One thing I don't understand, and maybe there's something I'm missing so it's an honest question:

Why would anyone who had both a laptop and a smartphone be interested in a tablet? My thought has always been it's an awful lot of money to pay for something that really doesn't do anything differently or better than my laptop or my smartphone (besides bigger screen). But when I'm on the go a bigger screen isn't that important to me. Not to pay 300 - 700 bucks for anyway.

I had that attitude until I got one

You don't realize what uses you're missing out on until you get it. For me it's perfect for lounging while the tv is on, either playing games or surfing the web on the couch. Yes I could do that with a laptop, but that's a bit more cumbersome than a tablet. Is it a necessity? Hell no. But I sure as heck get enough use out of it to justify the expense. I also use it for reading.

It's also great for travel; easier to lug a tablet around than a laptop. Tablets can also have direct cell coverage, so you don't always need a wifi connection like you would with a laptop. I have countless books on the ipad so I don't have to lug multiple books around with me when I travel.

That's more expensive though isn't it?

Don't most of these tablets operate with a monthly fee if you want to download things and use the internet?

All tablets have a wifi option as well. I have a monthly attached to mine but I also work for a cell phone provider. You can get a nook or kindle e-reader type tablet or simply get something like what stitches mentioned earlier. To me personally I never really saw the point of a wifi capable device that can't be used outside a wifi area. To me that defeats the purpose. The upside of that is it's free and even though it's not a secure connection if all you are doing is checking ESPN it's adequate. If you want something more secure you do it with a monthly service attached through your cell phone provider which should be an encrypted 3G or 4g broadband connection.

I see what you're saying, but those times while you're traveling and not in your hotel room, for me my iphone is just fine. As far as I know the iphone or comparable smartphone does just about everything a tablet can do. I was thinking about a tablet but once I got the iphone I just don't see the point anymore.

Since I got my tablet, I haven't touched my laptop. I have a desktop where I do most of my typing. I use the tablet to look at reports I reference in the field. A smartphone would be annoyingly small for that. For the things I do the tablet is easier, smaller and better than my laptop.

If my laptop wasn't my only connection to my work office I'd rarely ever use it, if at all.

I use my PC a good bit at home, but for quick browsing and such I use my tablet. I do typically only bring my laptop with me when I go somewhere for work (which is most weeks), but again that's mostly out of necessity (my Blackberry serves me well for browsing and such when I can't use my laptop).

With all that said, for how much I use my tablet and what I use it for I can't envision ever paying more than $300 for one.

That makes sense. I can see a work related need for using tablets, and I guess it's easier if you can get it paid for by company, or write off the cost for business.

If you have to have 4G then wait. If you don't need 4G and can get by on 3G or wifi then buy now. Waiting for Apple over-hyped products FTL.

ASUS and Samsung tablets are great, just go get one if you want to buy now.
