The Miami Herald believes the Dolphins could be interested in free agent FS Reggie Nelson.
The Herald has joined the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in speculating Nelson might end up in Miami. New Dolphins DC Kevin Coyle was Nelson's DBs coach the past two seasons, and Nelson is a Florida native. The Dolphins are also reportedly "searching for an upgrade at free safety." The speculation will intensify if Nelson reaches the open market. - Per Rotoworld and the Miami Herald

Could be a nice fit at the right price.

His issue is consistency. Even in Cincy, although not as much. He has all the ability you look for though.

I was also a big Nelson fan coming out of UF but he stunk it up in Jax then played relatively well in his contract year with Cincy so I'm leery on him.

I think we have 3 young FS who are comparable in terms of talent and potential, who will cost us less collectively than Nelson will cost us as an individual. I'm more concerned with finding a RDE and a 4-3 DT to pair with Starks if Soliai and Langford are not retained. Next on the list would be a WLB to play with Dansby and Burnett, Marvin Mitchell is a possibility but I like him more as a backup/ST guy. Offensively I'd feel more comfortable if we had more on the depth chart than Jerry, Garner, and Murtha at RG and RT, especially if Manning is a top priority as is being reported. I'd rank all of those ahead of adding a middle of the pack FS and I don't agree with getting rid of Bell this yr b/c we've already lost enough vets on that side of the ball.

I'd be ok with it, inconsistent or not, its better than what we've got.

Although it's weird to me that Cincy seems like they'll just let him walk without even making an offer though. They def have the money.

Then again it is the Bengals..

I think we have 2 ideal 4-3 DT's now in Starks and Odrick. The way the game is played now its all about pass rush. Both those guys are adequate vs the run but agile and quick enough to provide a pass rush as well. I wouldnt mind taking coples as well and adding him in as a DT (in a Justin Tuck role) and signing Abraham or Mario. DL is of utmost importance as the NYG showed why. Even in the Sb when they couldnt really hit Brady as much as they would have liked they still forced quick short drops and took away any vertical game covering up an average secondary.

I'm with you aside from Abraham.

He's old, beat up, and wants to be grossly overpaid.

Mario would be nice but he'll be very expensive. Depends what we're spending on which QB.

Abraham still managed 10 sacks-8 hits and 37 pressures in 628 snaps overall. He was the 3rd overall ranked 4-3 DE by PFF, 2nd vs the pass and 19th vs the run. Hes 34 but he should have another 2 years in him. If we go the Manning route, its feasible hes on the same schedule as Manning as to when time is up. He thinks he is a top 5 DE but overall he wont get top 5 DE money.

He's already making $8 million right now and he wants $12. I wouldn't even want him for $8. There'll be better options for that money.

Do we really want to sign a 34 year-old that needs to be on a snap-count? Seems counter-productive for our young defense.

Nelson played well in Cincy during the 2010 season too, so it wasn't like he just amped it up in his contract year.

If it requires cutting Bell to afford Nelson, then I'm all for it. We need better coverage ability than Bell provides, especially at his salary.

I agree but the thing is I don't think Abraham makes even 8 on the open market for all the reasons you mention. My guess is Abe gets something like 2/12 with like 5m as a bonus

Abraham wouldn't need to be on a snap count anymore than the rest of the DL. We already rotate guys a lot. His snap count of 628 would have made him 2nd to Starks compared to our DL last season.

Maybe, but with his age and wear I just don't see the point.

Wake isn't a spring chicken either so it'd certainly be nicer to have a younger guy to help now and for the future.

Coples & Mario would require that fap emoticon you were speaking of.

How about Wake at 4-3 SOLB and moves up to DE in nickel?

I'd think Wake and Williams at the DE spots would be fine. You certainly need a 3rd body to play in the middle. If you're being realistic about signing Mario Williams, that in all likelihood probably means Tony McDaniel is a cap casualty (probably guys like Bell, Incognito, Cook, Trusnik, and Culver as well). I think for what the role is - assuming it's the role that Manny Lawson played in Cincinnati's D as the SAM last year, Koa Misi fits that to a "T". I think someone like Courtney Upshaw would be excellent in it, but that's overkill, sadly, as I really like Upshaw.

I think if you target Mario, and get him, it probably means Paul Soliai isn't coming back, which I think squarely puts Dontari Poe and Fletcher Cox on the radar at the 8th spot. Let's not forget Ireland drafted Jared Odrick when he already had Starks, Soliai, Langford, McDaniel, Merling, and Ryan Baker on the roster.

My dream scenario is that you somehow get Mario Williams and Matt Flynn and free agency, nab Poe or Cox at 8, and hope like all heck that a guy like Mark Barron is still on the board in round 2. That's four of, if the biggest 4, needs Miami has. The total pipedream is keeping Soliai as well, depending on if you can get guys like Long, Dansby, and Marshall to restructure their deals a bit.

He did pretty good when he was asked to be a starter as a rookie and wouldn't really be all that astounding for him to develop into a quality player.

I assume your trading wake in this scenario I've been wondering what his worth would be draft pick wise.

Nelson would play free safety here no doubt, and if we aren't keeping Bell I think we could find a strong safety in the draft. The guy from Alabama (barron) looks pretty good from what i've seen of him.

Sean Smith at SS would be a terrible decision for the style of D that Coyle wants to run. They're better off moving someone like Reshad Jones there if they plan on cutting Yeremiah Bell. I don't get the fascination with moving Sean Smith - he's a CB. And, based on what Coyle got out of the likes of an aging Nate Clements, Pacman Jones, and Morgan Trent, one would only think Sean Smith would improve as a CB.

I'd say we would look for a high second, he's in contract year so value goes down a bit

No. Every game he's played the last 4 seasons has been at FS, other than one game in 2009, when the Jags started him at LCB.

Yup pure free safety, doesn't have the build or nature to play in the box, but Chris Clemons does..

Iloka has massive size but needs to work on making his movement more fluid. I feel Harrison is much more complete as a well rounded Fs or SS. Has the size and the run stop ability as well as coverage skills to play SS and has a great centerfield mentality to play FS also he has a seriously high motor on him. He's a competitor and athlete. I completely agree and like tanne hill but I think if we sign a Qb in FA (ESP manning) we should wait until next year to draft one. Touch p on our other areas of need then draft depth next year since I'm feeling a good year next yeR

    Here's what we can do...
according to site listed we will have a hefty amount of cap room..

    http://miami.cbslocal.com/2012/03/07/salary-cap-a-hurdle-for-manning-to-miami/

My scenario which is my dream scenario is this..
We will have roughly 20 million to play with to hit cap which I'll project at 123million

Trade bell for a 4th round pick. Panthers at 104
add 4 million to that 20

Trade wake for high 2nd round pick maybe rams 39

People are speculating that m Williams will want 12-13 mill

    SIGN HIM
    So 12 mill left..

Matt Flynn, 8 mill a year sign him.

We need 4-5 mill to sign rookies... Cut fodder or restructure one deal..

    Draft..
