Jimmy Johnson. Yeah he hit on the defense and draft picks in late rounds but John avery, Yatil Green...passing on randy moss for john avery? with dan marino as your qb? I almost wish dan went to the vikes to finish his career. imagine how much better they would have been that year?

Wannstedt actually had us winning in all but 2004, and 2004 you have to largely credit Ricky's retirement. He gets a bad rap for play-calling and personnel management, but to be fair those have been failures of pretty much every regime.

I'll tell you who ruined 2002. Ray freaking Lucas. 2002 was our year. "If coach would have put me in, we would have gone state!"

Shula made bad personnel decisions, but there was still enough there, especially with Marino, where we were mostly competitive year in and year out. JJ then came along, tore down most of the structure, and at least had us going back in the right direction, even if he wasn't able to achieve the same results he did in Dallas.

Where I think this franchise really went downhill was with Wannstadt. A good enough coach to at least keep the boat afloat with the roster he inherited from JJ, his awful personnel skills eventually led to the rotting of the wood that was once keeping up the house.

When comparing the worst DC's ever against each other, the edge must be given to the guy with a badass name.

Chuck Studley. I bet his middle name was Mutha****in'.

If the Robbie Family were still owners of the Dolphins today things might have been different. I never liked Wayne Huizenga and I really not liking Stephen Ross.

JJ never passed on Moss. He traded back with Green Bay before the draft even started. Once Moss started to slide, we had no chance. Looking at JJ during his interview after the first day I was convinced he would have taken Moss.

Still remember the heartbreak that caused 10 year old me. I actually think I cried as I walked away when the game finally ended. Brutal. haha

If only I understood all the implications following that game. Didn't sink in until years later.

The Dolphins started on this downward trend when Shula left as head coach. J.J. and Wannstedt had some decent teams but they were never a serious threat to go to a Super Bowl when these two men were the head coach of the Dolphins.

Huizenga attempted to hire what was considered the best coaches on the market at the time when he hired both Saban and then Cam Cameron. Unfortunately he missed terribly on both of these coaches. Huizenga biggest mistake in hindsight was the hiring of Parcells. Many in Dolphin nation. including myself, thought this was a great move at the time. Unfortunately Parcells never appeared to have his heart in improving the Dolphins once Huizenga sold the team to Ross. Parcells was also responsible for two of the worst hires in the history of the Dolphins, which were Sparano and Ireland.

Ireland has showed time after time that he has no idea how to build a quality football team. His latest move to trade the only quality receiver on the Dolphins for two third round drafts picks is only the latest example of how inept he is as a NFL GM.

With Ross and Ireland running this organization, I honestly don't see much hope. In fact with the Bills making a splash today by signing Mario Williams. I can see the Bills being more of threat in the AFC next season than the Dolphins. In fact it would not surprise me in the least if the Dolphins don't finish last in the AFC East next season. Manning is not going to pick the Dolphins and reports are that Flynn is in Seattle meeting with the staff of the Seahawks at this time. So it appears likely that Matt Moore will once again be the starting QB of the Dolphins next season.

With Ross and Ireland running this organization, the Dolphins will continue to decline and no big name players or coaches will have any desire to come down and join the Dolphins. Ireland should have been fired BEFORE Sparano and the fact that he is still running this team shows clearly that Ross doesn't have a clue. If the Dolphins sell more than 40,000 season tickets this season, I will be shocked.

What started the steady demise was when Shula was given complete control of personnel along with his coaching role.
We wasted the Marino years because of ineptness in drafting.

The biggest dagger however was and probably always will be Dave Wannstedt.
He clearly did more to erode the franchise than any other person came close to doing.
Rode a championship defense into the ground and left the talent level of the Dolphins roster floating in a toilet by the time he left.

We have not been able to correct the situation since.

Wanny had as much to do with us winning with JJ's roster as Barry Switzer had to do with Dallas winning a super bowl with JJ's roster in Dallas........ NADA!
Wanny rode our defense while slowly killing every drop of talent we had on the roster.

The Dolphins, never went down the tubes. But their fans sure did. So I blame the rise of internet fanboy criticism.

Honestly, the Dolphins have suffered insofar as they've failed to find a great QB since Marino.

Had the Dolphins truly gone down the tubes they would have been in position to draft one of the few elite 1st round QBs in the last decade.

Every time they drafted high, there has been no great No 1 QB. So they drafted Ronnie Brown and Jake Long.

They've been mediocre enough for too long, and only sucked enough at the wrong times.

Another option - Robbie building the worst stadium in America in the last 30 yrs:

A small boy was spotted by police in Miami, FL carrying his belongings tied in a bandana on a stick over his shoulder. Instantly recognizing the boy as a runaway, the officer told him to get in the car and would take him home to his dad.
"Oh no, please don't do that. My mom and I left dad because he beats me."
So the police officer offered to take him home to his mom.
"Oh no, please don't do that. My mom beats me, too!" the boy cried.
The officer was perplexed. "Well where should I take you then?"
"Take me to Sun Life Stadium. I know the Dolphins don't beat anybody there."

Wanny was not a good coach here, but neither was JJ's defense a "championship" defense. They were an overrated defense, a defense that got routinely destroyed in the playoffs, and a defense that couldn't put teams away, a la the end of 2002. They were a defense that routinely folded in big spots. Consequently, they have little to show for all of their alleged greatness.

Wanny gets (and deserves) plenty of blame for his failings, yet the defense never gets any blame for theirs. Wanny or no Wanny, there were plenty of games where the defense could and should have stepped up to lead the team to victory (which is what you'd expect from a "championship" defense with alleged Hall of Famers on it no less). They almost never did-- certainly not in big playoff games and, by 2002, not in the regular season either. Which is why they were never a "championship" defense, except maybe on paper. When it came to winning actual championships on the field, they performed no better than the early 90s Miami defenses which get no credit for being even good, much less great.

The Dolphins went downhill when there was no apparent succession plan to replace Dan Marino. Journeyman after Journeyman have manned that position ever since leading to less continuity on offense which in turn has made it a need for the D to shoulder the load, and they have slowly gone downhill yearly to where we are

The best of defenses get worn down and fail late in games after 3 and a half quarters of 3 and outs.
That defense was a top defense and anyone saying otherwise just wants to make excuses for Wanny...... why on earth anyone would want to I don't know but there are a few of you around.

Right. No excuses for Wanny, plenty of excuses for the alleged "championship" defense-- which never won a championship other than 1 division title and never got past the divisional round of the playoffs. But they were a great defense, they just were, no need to actually prove that on the field or in the playoffs.

That's right, shame on that defense for not doing their job & the job of the offense. Shame on that defense for not overcoming the deficiencies of a pick-six prone backup qb posing as a starter. Shame on that defense for being a bump-man, non-blitzing, what you see is what you get yet still holding teams down. Shame on that defense for not overcoming wannyball. Shame on that defense for getting tired, didn't they know the fatigue option was turned off? etc.

    Chill. It was sarcasm.

But honestly, I reject the premise. The organization has not gone down the tubes. They've just failed to find a QB.

The only thing worse than watching the Dolphins lose is enduring the endless belly aching from fans.

True, and I hope and wish that everyone who is shooting Flynn down reads what you wrote there about Rogers and Ryan not being highly touted, Flynn played some pretty good ball while at LSU, if I remember correctly. Didn't mean to insinuate or offend by no means.
