Alex Smith is in contract negotiations with the Dolphins currently.
They must have liked what they saw.

Or they realized their gamble to low ball Flynn backfired, and they are now left with no other options... Sadly, we'll never know.

We should just ****ing sign Alex Smith if we can and draft Weeden. Draft Weeden anyway, he is probably the most NFL ready rookie not named Luck/RG3. If Smith sucks like pre-2011 go to Weeden.

    From a 49er fan:

I was on here looking at what dolphin fans think about them going after Alex
I personally think Alex is an above average QB, he's someone that wont turn the ball over a lot, can be very accurate, very mobile (has pretty good speed), VERY tough and extremely clutch. He led the 49ers to 6 fourth quarter come from behind wins last year, did you guys watch the Saints game?

And to the guy that said Alex is basically Mark Sanchez. lmao. Alex is MUCH better than Mark Sanchez, a lot more accurate, clutch, mobile, and not turnover prone. He only threw 5 INTs last season, Sanchez threw 5 in the last 2 games of the season.

Like I said, I think Alex is a pretty good quarterback. He's not elite and maybe top 10 but he's not a scrub like some people think. Definitely an above average quarterback
this is coming from a 49er fan thats watched Alex the last few years

Im definitely pissed if we let Alex go without signing Peyton Manning
that would be all bad for us niners :(
No alex or manning would be terrible

  9. 1. If Smith signs with somebody and Manning does not sighn with the 9ers where does that leave SF for QB options.

    2. This may not be a tactic to low ball Flynn it might be an indication that Philbin is not as high on him as some believe. They may of only brought him in out of desperation.

What is your opinion on him? Personally I believe you guys threw him to the wolves way too early in his career when he wasn't ready to be starting yet. He played for an Urban Meyer offense and needed bench time to adjust his mechanics and learn to read NFL defenses. However I think he is a smart guy with the right physical tools to succeed.

Alex smith is a good quarterback, it'd be a good signing for you guys. Accurate, mobile, clutch, tough. I honestly think Alex is an above average quarterback, not elite, but definitely above average.

I'll be pissed as a niner fan if we dont land Manning and dont retain ALex.

Heard a rumor we are looking to sign smith to a contract that pays him 8 million annual. More than what Flynn got. This has to be a joke. If you don't believe me go to rotoworld.

Apparently the Denver Post is reporting we are close to getting him for 8 mil a year.

"The Dolphins then turned to Smith, who will get a multiyear deal worth about $8 million a year."

Don't really mind the signing although the money seems a bit off compared to his value. I think he has the mental and physical tools to succeed. It was always a matter of adjusting to the NFL style of play after spending his college career in an Urban Meyer offense. He sucked early on due to a variety of reasons from poor coaching to poor talent around him. I could see him being successful in a Philbin offense.

Well I said hes an above average QB. He's very mobile (has pretty good speed, did you see his 28 yard TD vs the saints), very tough, clutch - he had 6 come from behind wins for us last season, can be very accurate at times. He's also very careful with the ball, he wont throw a lot of INTs and wont make stupid passes. oh and hes very very smart, not just football smart but smart in general.

I think Alex would be pretty good with Philbin

Dolphin fans are hilarious once we lose out on one guy, you guys are settling and happy about bringing in ALEX SMITH!!??? and at 8 million a year, he's a BUM. Am I crazy or wouldn't it be better to save the money and keep Moore? And draft a prospect. Really alex smith?????

The money is too much I will agree.

However I'd much rather have Smith than Tannenhill, a guy who isn't even a first rounder in most years. Smith is not a bum, there were reasons for his early failures but some people want to just believe that every QB should be able to come in and start from day one in the NFL and light the world on fire.

I understand what your saying but I feel like you know what your getting with Smith, mediocre play. And I think you can get the same if not better result if we stay with Moore, and save a lot more money. Alex smith is not going to wow anybody and yes that is most likely the case with Tannehill/Weeden but their still that unknown factor where they can turn into something special. And before last season which he did alright with the BEST defense in the league along with one of the best TE/security blankets in the NFL which he will not have here in Miami, he has been classified as a Bust. He was the No.1 pick and he hasnt had one 3,000 yd season. What makes you think that will happen here with Davone Bess as the no.1 receiver.

As I've said I believe his early struggles were mostly because he was not ready to start in the NFL. He was fresh out of an Urban Meyer offense in a sub par conference where the speed of the game was nothing like the NFL and nor were the defensive schemes. He always had the mental ability as well as the physical tools to succeed but he was never put in a real position to do so. He had to learn a new offense every single year early on which also helped to stunt his growth, and as good as Vernon Davis is you can't just throw him the ball every single play. His receivers were so bad half of this message board probably could have gotten a try out.

He's a guy I can see having a lot of success under Philbin and I see last season as nothing but a spring board to better things for him.

Okay but he was drafted in 2005? I know he's had changing coordinators and coaches often and that doesn't help but you think by now he would learn something, if you have the ability, everything shouldn't be based on the coordinator and in turn should show up on the field, his lack of accuracy and cosistancey (which I think is one of the most important aspects of the WCO and Phillbins top qualities in a QB) has nothing to do with his coaches.

He completed over 61% of his passes last season and that isn't bad at all. Early in his career the offenses his team ran were not high percentage passing offenses. They were vertical based offenses that didn't put an emphasis on short passes that keep the chains moving. Lots of post and seam routes, and that is not his strength. Actually coming out of college his accuracy was the main reason he was selected #1 overall. Our system fits him well if we run something similar to what the Packers did in Philbins tenure.

Philbin likes to run a lot of bootlegs and Smith is perfect for that type of thing as he throws pretty well on the run.

This is his rookie scouting report. Tell me this does not sound like the perfect Philbin QB.

In the end it comes down to whether you believe last year was Alex Smith or his first years were. Personally I believe he will improve off of last season.

I believe almost every QB is a system QB. There are very very few who aren't. I happen to think Smith fits Philbins system extremely well. If we don't sign him my opinion won't change. I'm actually kind of really wanting this to happen.

Yeah I mean I think he will progress and get better especially if he stays in San Fran but I just wouldn't want to see him here for the kind of money he will demand, rather stick with Moore and and the draft ahead.

  39. I find all this so confusing. I dont know if all these reports are more about speculation by the reporters or are they factual reports? How is it we are even looking at Alex Smith if they have agreed in priniciple on signing Flynn.
