This is a smart move. We're simply covering our bases with an inexpensive but experienced player so we're not left entering training camp with one rostered QB should someone else beat us to our desired plan A, Tannehill. That's why we signed him to one year. He's an insurance policy, nothing more, and if anyone can think of a better temporary one year insurance policy, I'd genuinely like to hear it.
I hear jets, bills and pats fans laughing everywhere right now.. Why don't we sign an start Curtis painter to bring us to the #1 pick while we are at it
Me too man but a lot of fans still think he is a smart GM, lmao! We have the worst owner and the worst GM in any sport!
Exactly, I do not understand the dislike for Garrard..at all, it is as if fans are on a hair trigger to complain even when a move makes perfect football sense. My one caveat is he played in the AFCS which is not known for lock down defenses over the last decade, it is a sort of Vince Young conundrum, sure there are numbers, but look at the competition. Otherwise, 9 millie for Alex Smith who is demonstrably no better than MMoore, or Garrard on a one yr "show me" deal, it's a solid move..now sign Mark Anderson.
2013 is supposed to be a half decent draft class as I understand it. Nah, Miami will pick like 9th just like every suckass year.
Matt Moore was Ireland's guy all along. These pursuits of every FA qb in the nfl was just a smoke screen. Brilliant poker moves.
I don't understand the uproar over this. He's going to be Moore's backup, no? This won't prevent us from drafting a QB either so I'm not sure why there's so much animosity over this.
We clearly have the best front office in football. **** that. We have the best front office in all of sports. Nah, not strong enough. Next time GM fails, these ****ers have a patriotic duty to go turn that one around. They're just that brilliant.
I agree that he's been the target all along (outside of the Manning pipe dream). That's why there's been so much silence about him. If we didn't want Tannehill, we would've shown some pretend interest to throw people off our primary trail (be in Flynn or what have you) b/c if it's one thing we are, it's predicable. I don't think Cleveland takes him at 4, and I'm not so certain that anyone will pay the price to leapfrog us for him b/c it's pushing it to take him in the top 10 as it is b/c of his time needed to develop. As of now, I'd honestly say he's ours.
Exactly, this was an obvious move, the real question is what happens at Wr, I do not care who we signed, if they really believe Clyde Gates is the answer at Wr, then Garrard will feel right at home with a very bland Wr corps. What is really funny to me is I'd bet half the knee jerkers have no idea what Garrard's career in J-ville looked like, comparing him to Curtis Painter literally made my head hurt.
There are a handful of teams out there - Cowboys, Bears, etc. who have signed better back ups than the guy Ireland just signed to compete for the starting job. But if it prevents Tebow, it's not all bad. It it means not drafting a QB, Ireland can go straight to hell.
If you're a Tannehill fan you love this move; if you're not a Tannehill fan you're obviously upset right now. I like Tannehill so I'm happy about this signing.
Yep, people on here acting like we signed him to a 3year 26 million dollar deal. Come on people, there are 53 spots on the roster. Not everyone can be Matt Flynn =0.
The NFLN host said he just got a text from a Phins palyer who said referring to the front office: "Whats going on up there?"
I agree with those citing this as a sign they're likely going after Tannehill in the draft (with Weeden as a fallback if he's gone). So, from that perspective, I think I'm OK with this. I say that because Garrard is nothing more than an insurance policy if true. Best case scenario, Tannehill (if drafted) tears up the pre-season, and they give him his shot right from opening day. Worst case, he struggles and Moore and Garrard are in competition to start while the rookie watches and learns.
I disagree. It's about Tannehill, not Moore IMO. There's no need for a smoke screen & poker move when Moore is already ours. If he were the guy all along then Ireland would've come out and said so since he's already rostered.
Okay, I've calmed down.... If Moore is the starter and Garrard is the backup, then okay, but if Garrard is the starter, we're ****ed. Garrard is ****ing worthless.
Agreed, agreed, and the first rounder is getting used on Coples based on several factors if you ask me. Your suggested next location for Ireland seems appropriate though.
people who don't see the animosity: We were told, by our owner, OUR NUMBER 1 PRIORITY was a quarterback. After jettisoning our Safety and #1 Wideout, we've been given the quarterback... David Gerrard.
Actually, I changed my mind. I don't want Ireland to draft a quarterback in this year's draft. The new GM should get to do that in 2013.
You just don't understand player evaluation at the level of a master of offseason poker like the great IRISH.
Based on what's happened so far, we will not draft a QB this year besides russel Wilson in the 5th. And we will start delvin who is our darkhorse
not to sure that Ireland goes for Tannehill, I hope philbin, and Sherman make alot of sense to that guy.
